2. 70’S HORROR MOVIE POSTERS
1974 1978
The horror movie posters from the 70’s are
much more animated and consist of three or
four tones of colour, they mostly used black,
white and red but sometimes they involve fiery
tones of orange and yellow or cold tones of blue
and grey. Compared to other movies from the
2000’s, the posters are all animated and they do
not consist of photos of real life people. The
fact that they are not real images, maintain the
difference between real life and fantasy, more
modern posters are much more close to reality
and much more threatening. The illustrations are
simple and book like, there is enough
background for the text to go upon and the
writing is generic and bold. The font is not very
different in the two posters I have selected,
however different font sizes establish the title of
the poster and smaller text additional
information or in the first poster, the red text
symbolizes the title of the movie.
3. 80’S HORROR MOVIE POSTERS
1987 1981
In the 80’s the illustrations are starting to
disappear and more real life are being used, the
tones are the same but less and less light
colours are used for the movie posters. Most
of them seem dominant in black and blue and
it is only the text which is white or red. The
font of the text is more futuristic and not as
simple and generic as the ones in the 70’s
movie posters. The images usually involve one
individual only and there is always enough
background, simple enough for the text to go
upon. The gestures of the characters are very
similar to modern posters, the first poster is
very similar to the modern horror entitled “
The Gift” and the second is very similar and
symbolic for “Carrie”
4. 90’S HORROR MOVIE POSTERS
1992 1999
The Horror movie posters of the 90’s
detach themselves more and more from
the illustration designs and have started
using more digital photography and
digital manipulation like Photoshop. I
chose these two posters because of how
similar they appear, they both use two
females looking straight into the camera,
the gradient dark and emerging towards
the middle of the photograph. The more
modern the poster, the more simple and
less detailed, the darker and more morbid
whereas the older the horror poster, the
more colour is used.
5. 2000’S HORROR MOVIE POSTERS
2005 2001
The posters from the 2000’s are clearly
more dark and sinister, the tones of colour
have become more and more earthly and
neutral. The reason why I picked these two
posters is because they both show eyes in
their images, in both posters, the colours are
greys, browns, oranges, whites and blacks.
Furthermore, the writing is simple, thin and
almost invisible inside the poster, this being
done so that the audience pays attention to
the photography much more than the title
of the movie, the photos play a much more
important role in modern posters as they
are the visual trailer for the movie and tell
more of the story than the title of the
movie does.
6. 2010-ONWARDS HORROR MOVIE
POSTERS
2010 2013
In posters produced after 2010, the
advancement in digital editing is shown in the
way in which the photographs appear more and
more bizarre without much physical effort. In
these two images, we see two young girls dressed
in white gowns, this is a modern expectation of
what a scary character would be. It’s a pattern
which points to the rules of horror and judging
by the striking similarities between the
characters, we can see that this specific
appearance is expected and it’s so popular that it
is not over worn in the eyes of the audience.
The two posters use different tones, the first one
is more pale , the colour of rot and decay and
the second is bloody and dark which
differentiated the two female characters and
shows the two different stories being told by
each poster.
