2. TIME WARNER SUITABILITY
Time Warner would be suitable to produce my film due to their
success with their horror films such as Paranormal Activity,
Oculus, The cabin in the woods and The quiet ones. As Time
Warner is one of the big six studios this will make sure that my
film will be broadcasted and known to a wide audience,
ensuring its success.
As Time Warner has many subsidiaries, including Warner Bros,
New Line Cinema and HBO. These subsidiaries of Time Warner
will help to make sure my film will be well known around the
release of the film through the use of synergy. My film can be
produced mainly through the New Line Cinema which would be
suitable as it successfully produces horror films.
3. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience includes both male and female people, the main
ages that are interested in the horror genre are around the ages of
16-30, so making this have a wide target audience which will
increase the popularity.
The target audience for my film have lots of different hobbies and
interests including shopping, listening to music, seeing their friends,
watching and playing sports and watching films. As there is a wide
age range for the target audience of my film the audience range from
full time school age to full time working age.
As my target audience is very wide this increases the potential of the
success of the film and so makes it suitable for a big institution like
Time Warner.
4. CONVENTIONS OF GENRE
The mise en scene conventionally used in the horror genre includes
blood, weapons like guns and knifes, scary costumes like masks and
old fashioned clothing, all of these things help to create a
conventional horror film. The lighting conventional for horror films is
typically low key lighting, it helps to create fear and tension, it
connotes darkness as conventionally bad things happen in the dark.
The sound conventionally used in horror films is to build tension and
suspense within the scene, it is typically non diegetic ambient sound,
conventional sounds include screaming, footsteps and tension
building music. Conventional editing used in horror films includes
slow paced editing to create tension and also fast paced editing in
violent scenes. Conventional camerawork for the horror genre
includes point of view shots to show what the characters are looking
at, also empty space composition to create fear f the unknown, also
high and low angles.
5. CONVENTIONS OF FORM
Conventional features of a trailer include certification at the start of a
trailer, also having short clips of the film to show what it is about and
attract the audience, these clips are usually used with fade to blacks,
fast paced editing and ellipsis of time, which is conventional to the
horror genre.
In trailers it is conventional to have credits and other information
shown throughout the trailers to help advertise the film to the
audience and get important information out to the audience. It is also
conventional to have a piece of music running throughout the whole
trailer, with smaller pieces for different parts to build tension in the
trailer. Throughout most trailers there is not much dialogue used to
ensure that the whole storyline of the film is not given away.
6. PRODUCTION IDEAS
The idea that we have come up with will fit in with the other
successful Time Warner horror films, my idea also uses conventions
from the horror genre which will also help to ensure its success. The
idea is based around a group of friends at someone's house for a
week in the holidays to try and check if the house is haunted by using
cameras around the house, bad things start to happen around the
house and the friends don’t return. It will be set in a normal looking
house, with a school and garden located near it, the film will be made
to look as normal as possible to the setting and costumes will be
everyday and modern. It will include conventional horror features like
blood, low key lighting, bangs, crashes, screaming and whispering.
The main characters will be shown a lot in the trailer to make sure
they are known and will have lots of conventional camerawork used
around them, like close ups and establishing shots of all the
characters.
7. PRODUCTION CONVENTIONS
I will use my research to make sure the film will use conventions of
form and genre to ensure my production looks professional. I will use
conventional props such as weapons, picture frames and cameras,
also as it will be made to look as normal as possible to fit in with
conventional horror films, so there will be everyday items around
houses like phones, kettles and TVs, this will help to make the setting
look as normal as possible and conventional. I will use conventional
sound throughout to help build up tension by using non diegetic
ambient tension building sound, also I will use diegetic sound to
make it sound realistic for the crashes and mysterious things that
happen around the house. Low key lighting will be used a lot to
connote the scariness of the scenes also along with fast paced editing
and jump cuts which are conventional to the horror genre.
8. PRODUCTION APPEAL
My production will appeal to a wide target audience as the storyline is
a popular one which is similar to other popular and successful horror
films, which will help to ensure the appeal of the film. From my
previous research I have found out different things that will help to
make my product appealing to the audience including psychological
storylines, everyday settings and characters and so this is what I will
be using in my production. I will use camerawork effectively by using
a handheld camera effect and close up of characters faces to create
tension and build up suspense, this will help me to appeal to the
audience as they will find these things appealing . I will use editing
effectively by using fade out and fast paced editing to make it
appealing to the target audience. Overall I plan to attract and appeal
to the audience by using short clips of the film to entice the audience
to be attracted to the film.
