Working In A Small Business Analysis
First Draft Working In a Small Business
Have you ever heard of a speech community? A speech community is a community of people who
share the same language and or pattern of language. It is a community where people who are outside
that community wouldn't understand the language. Everyone has their own speech community and
could have more than one. A community that I belong to is at my work which is a consignment
shop. I have worked at this consignment shop for about 3 years now. I like working at this
consignment shop because I work with people I love and have known my whole life. The fact that I
spend pretty much every day working with people who are like my family is the best. I also love
working here because all of the same customers come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since everyone has known each other forever than it's more like a causal language because everyone
messes and jokes around with each other but then again we can have business conversations too. For
example whenever we are joking around with each other it could be like Missy: "Tiffany did you
stink up the bathroom lol (her laughing out loud)" Tiffany: "Oh my gosh no I haven't even went to
the bathroom today". Missy would have been literally laughing so hard just because Missy would
have just came out and said this by joking with her and her not being serious about it. But we can
also have conversations about business for example the other day we were talking about how some
of the employees joke around with our missionary but she said that it needs to stop because it hurts
his feels and we need to give him respect with all of the good things that he does for other

Personal Narrative: The New York Speech Community
I am in the New York speech community. The ways I am apart of this community is through the fact
that my parents and sister both grew up in New York, although I was born in Arizona I learned the
dialect through my family. Growing up I always heard words a certain way, with the New York
dialect, therefore I developed it unknowingly into my own dialect. Many people accuse me of faking
a New York accent when they find out I was born in Arizona. Being accused of faking a New York
accent frustrates me because its something I don't do willingly rather unknowingly. Here is a link to
a video teaching people how to speak with a New York accent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Subzero: Speech Community
Have you ever thought about how you talk to people? How the way you communicate with people
changes depending on who you are talking to and where you are? A speech community is a group of
people who share a similar vocabulary and similar rules of language. These communities are often
found in schools, places of work, homes, churches, and even on the internet. A speech community
occurs wherever there are people. A very interesting speech community in my life happens at the
place I work. It's a restaurant called Subzero.
Subzero is a restaurant that sells sub sandwiches and ice cream. It is in Shepherdsville next to the
Amazon warehouses, on the Cedar Grove Strip. The restaurant is setup very similar to a Subway.
The counter is on the left and the dining room is on the right. Glass separates the customer from the
all of the meats and vegetables, which the customers get to choose. Subzero is in a strip mall, so the
whole front of the store is glass widows, which allows the customers to see everything going on
outside. It usually smells like bread because we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generally Nathan is in his office unless we get too busy and need him to help out in the front of the
store. With Subzero being a small business it allows for me to have an unusual speech community
with Nathan. It is one where we both recognize that he is my superior, but we also talk to each other
in a more casual way. For example he calls me by my nickname such as when a customer comes in
and I don't see them he will say "Heads up, Birdie." Also all the employees call Nathan the less
formal version of his name "Nate." Nate and I make jokes with each other and talk about things
non–work related, like sports and TV shows. Although, when he has to tell me about something that
involves the restaurant, then it is a more formal as he doesn't want anything to be misunderstood, but
after that it is back to the

Speech Community Research Paper
Transitioning between speech communities A lot of people struggle within speech communities
because after high school some people don't go to college so they never progress their speech skills.
When a person doesn't progress like there friends they might be embarrassed that they don't
understand or is just complained confused what their friends are saying. Struggling within a speech
community is not abnormal a lot of people go through a phase like that but they usually find
someone to help them through the phase. If you're struggling through a speech community just find
a tutor or an English teacher or even a friend to help you transition through to the next speech
community in your life. Many people may not be aware about the speech community but it could be
a scary thing to learn because up until the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you never move from one speech community to the next it could affect you in many ways if you
have keep improving your way of speech it could open up more job opportunities for you. Because
employers look for people who can talk to them and understand what they're trying to say instead of
you just looking at them weird because you don't understand them. Also you may find more respect
by your peers and teachers because you talking better shows your teachers you have been paying
attention to them and not just been wasting their time. The transition could have negative affects on
you in your group of friends because you might improve faster then they do and they may exclude
you from that group. The future of you depends on how you act if you still act like a highschooler
you might find it hard to get anywhere you could have a lot of street smart like Malcolm X and
become successful. But Malcolm x found out the hard way he might be street smart but he couldn't
handle it in the end without having school

Tesco
Tesco speech in Bakersfield
Dear residents of Bakersfield.
My name is Allan Marsh. I'm a big adversary of Tesco's almost monopoly like expansion on the
British market. Furthermore, I was the mastermind of a successful, and very similar, campaign like
this. I led the campaign called "Herne against Tesco".
As with your case Tesco also wanted to close our local pub, and build an express store.
For starters we tried to be reasonable and appeal to their logical side, by pointing out that it would
be meaningless for Tesco to have a store there, due to parking limitations around the building.
However, our callout was ignored completely. They continued their construction plans. Therefore,
we had to take drastic measures. So I gathered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it won't be a walk in the park!
Tesco is legally covered and knows their way around every crack of the construction law. They
know that pubs are ideal targets for express stores, due to the small amounts of square feet, which
allows them to avoid the construction permission as well as closing on Sundays. Therefore, we
cannot fight them legally; we just have to show them our discontent of their stores.
But why am I such an adversary of Tesco you might ask. I feel they destroy hundreds of small
communities by overpowering and siphoning the money away from the locals with promises of
more jobs etc. However, that is an entirely obscure postulate from Tesco in my opinion. On the
contrary I think they rob the locals of jobs, by overpowering the small grocery– and retail stores,
and destroying the character of beautiful small British communities. And it is happening every day,
right before our eyes, not just in Britain but also abroad – Tesco is taking over. Furthermore, people
have a tendency to tug the problems under the carpet, and be wrapped up in their own life's.
But how do we stop Tesco's monopolization? As mentioned earlier it is not a walk in the park, it's
going to take hard work from every community with this exact problem. Nevertheless, there is an
answer; the answer is a united effort. Alone no one will hear us, especially not a

The Chameleon Effect: The Perception-Behavior Link And...
It was a brutally cold November morning, and my roommate and I talked in hushed voices as we hid
under our covers in dread. Her voice was warm and robust, tinged with a slight Nigerian influence.
Our tones were calm and slow, still waking from our short sleep. Not five minutes in, however, this
rare moment of peace was sharply shattered by a banging at the door. As the stomps of a cranky
Tyler entered the room, we knew our avoidance was over. Immediately, Tyler began to yell at my
roommate, Oluwafolabomi, in a deep, loud voice, thick in its Liberian influence. The ensuing debate
between the girls, over topics I could barely discern, bore no resemblance to the previous
conversation. Oluwafolabomi's voice was now deep, vivid, and utterly ... Show more content on

Questioning the fundaments of community building is the start of the solution. Of these building
blocks, perhaps the most significant and unrecognized is the chameleon effect. The chameleon effect
subconsciously communicates community, and subconsciously marks its outsiders. It is therefore
imperative that people begin to become aware of their use of this effect. Admittedly, it is more than
mildly ironic that to urge awareness of a subconscious action. But implicit biases, or attitudes or
stereotypes that affect the way we perceive and interact with others, are created in the subconscious
("Understanding implicit bias"). Likewise, implicit biases must be combatted by thorough
examination of the subconscious. The chameleon effect and the implicit biases that may guide it
must be thoroughly examined in order to gain an awareness of our actions. It is recognition of why
such actions occur that we can begin to truly control them. Communities are important. They foster
feelings of support, preserve culture, and validate the worth of the shared characteristic. In critical
times, we must examine our subconscious actions to promote these benefits of communities, as well
as overcome their inheent

Analyzing Paul Robert's Speech Communities
Do you ever think about the way you speak and why? Well, Paul Robert does an excellent job
explaining why people use the dialect they use in Speech Communities. He discusses that people
change their use of language throughout their lives to conform to either society or to what kind of
person they want to be, or to just conform to who they need to be at a particular moment, in which I
agree. People's choice of language, including myself, are affected by many of their surroundings,
such as where they live and grow up at, their peers, and a person's work place. I was born and raised
in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, which has greatly affected my language in my younger years and when I
go home. Pittsburgh has its own unique words and pronunciation ... Show more content on

Paul Roberts did a great job explaining how different parts of one's life, known as communities,
affects their language development and their language at a given time. Growing up in Pittsburgh,
attending a performing arts high school, and currently working at job where I talk to many different
people has changed my speech and has extended my vocabulary. Now I use more of my Pittsburgher
language when I am at home or surrounded by friends from Pittsburgh as well. I rarely use my
theater and dance jargon around fellow dancers and theater goers. Now with my current job I am
learning new terminology for different careers. I know that I will be exposed to many more
communities and my language will adjust to my new surroundings. Once a person is older they are
more stubborn and stuck in their language mindset, but will continue to adjust their speech to fit in
or they just get use to the new

High School Discourse Analysis
The Discourse community that I selected to present is my high school AP English three course.
Although a substantial amount of knowledge was obtained in this class, the growing problem of a
lack of dedication was harming it.
According to the author, James Paul Gee, in "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction", my
AP English three class is a secondary dominant Discourse as it possessess "the (potential)
acquisition of social 'goods' (money, prestige, status, etc.)" This course is designed to help students
earn college credits through preparation for a challenging exam. In order to fulfill this purpose,
assignments are vigorously administered to enhance the three genres writing, reading, and speech.
Students begin to retain what they have learned and apply this in the classroom, developing an
English dialect within the division of labor between the student and teacher that contains intense
words and ceases to have slang. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ranging from writing sixteen page essays to interpreting twelve pages of texts constantly, students
expend their energy without any real break to recover. This results in the degradation of grades and
learning capabilities as individuals become increasingly stressed to continue on. Teachers acquire a
difficulty to perform their jobs because students stop desiring to understand. This can be extremely
harmful when AP exams take place towards the end of the year since students are often too
exhausted by this point to perform well on the test. If students are tremendously tired, the "shared
objective" of a Discourse community as expressed by John Swales in "Characteristics of a Discourse
Community", will inevitably fail. Many people engage in the class for college credit and because of
their fatigue, all the progress that they have made is

Morgan's Imagined Communities
1.
"Imagined communities," according to Anderson, are a form of speech communities created by the
mass–production of shared media. They are "imagined" because members will never meet all other
members face–to–face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music
video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in different
countries. After a conversation, the two meet–up in person and begin the song. Morgan describes
this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the community
belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson's model of imagined communities as
the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with members who will
never interact with most other members. Anderson's model is primarily criticized for two reasons: it
is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities.
2.
A person's linguistic repertoire encompasses all forms and levels of languaging practices that
individual has access to. Using this term allows a broader understanding of one's access to various
languaging practices as opposed to the understanding offered by the term "language." The latter is
generally understood to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Great Disasters And Disasters, By Hurricane Harvey
During times of great disasters and catastrophes, people will put aside their differences to lend a
helping hand to their fellow man. Those who need help are more than welcome to receive it, no
matter who gives it to them. However, on a normal day, people tend to separate from those who
differ in race, make offensive comments, or inflict violence because of ethnicity. In the end, we are
all one race: the human race. I was able to experience a moment where race and religion did not
matter.
A recent disaster, Hurricane Harvey, is known to be "the third most powerful on the Saffir–Simpson
scale" (O 'BrienReuters 1). The storm has crippled Houston and demolished the smaller

Congressman Randy Weber was instantly approached by the media. Mr. Weber said, "It's
unbelievable that all of these young volunteers of different races and religions have gathered
together to help others that were affected by the hurricane." The dialogue he had with the
interviewer was refreshing. The judge of the local court, Terry Lawrence, stayed back for several
hours and assisted us with collecting the tickets and transporting the water cases into cars. He was
excellent with communicating with the locals. His enthusiasm and high spirit allowed the line to
operate at a quicker pace. The bright smiles that radiated from the people kept the volunteers
pushing in the hot weather. Some of the people who were receiving the supplies parked their cars to

family I met left an impression on me.
The Mexican mother was holding her son, who did not have any articles of clothing on but a diaper.
She was about to burst into tears when she received the supplies. I carried a thirty–six–water bottle

how she "didn't expect this much goodwill from Muslims." I was surprised how some people

distinguished and exclusive group deemed "The Speech Geek Community." These "Speech Geeks"

Speech Communities: Gender Differences Between Men And Women
There are many different speech communities that are formed out of social locations. "A speech
community exists when people share norms about how to use talk and what purposes it serves."
(Wood, 2014). This is why speech communities are formed from social locations; people who
socialize in the same places often develop the same understandings of communication. One type of
speech community is a gender speech community. Each gender has their own speech community,
which is one reason why people of opposite genders often misunderstand each other (Wood, 2014).
Gender socialization begins in children. Studies have shown that the differences between the games
that boys and girls play teach them when and how to communicate. Girls often play games like ...

engage in different actives, where they do their homework, worship and enjoy time together. The
vineyard provides a variety of services for the community. One thing I liked about the vineyard is
how much the community cares and value the children receive from the volunteers and staff. The
mission of the vineyard is that the children from all different schools are brought together for a
couple of hours to engage in different activities to learn and grow as a whole. The vineyard has an
enormous impact on the community it keeps the children safe, and helping them with their everyday
life afterschool. For example, helping them with their homework making the children think about
certain situations, also they feed the children dinner which is a very lovely. During my time at the
vineyard the population of children I worked with ranged from kindergarten to 3rd graders. I had a
lot of one on one time with one 2nd grader who always loved to show me what he could do also
what he was struggling with. The vineyard really did bring all the families together. The vineyard is
a very positive and safe environment for everyone.

Arguments Against Teen Activism
Teen activism is when teens see problems in their communities or in the world and they take actions
to try to fix those problems. Thanks to the teen activists of the world, problems such as lack of
access to an education and too much electronic waste in the environment are in the process of being
solved. Teen activists are brave and they persevere. Teen activists do not take no for an answer;
instead, they face the obstacles in their way, learn from their mistakes and stand up for what they
believe in. They inspire others and help to make our worId a better place. Without the effort of teen
activists, problems like the ones mentioned above might not be addressed. Teen activism plays an
important role in helping to solve the issues in our world. When teen activists see a problem, they do
whatever they can to try and fix it . An essential part of teen activism is gaining support for a cause.
Therefore, teen activists talk to their families, friends and others, such as ... Show more content on

Definition Essay: College Community Service Requirements Community service is a term that will
bring a different image to mind for every person who hears it spoken. It can make someone think of
volunteering weekends at soup kitchens, court–ordered highway clean–up, or even random acts of
kindness within a community. Whatever a person's idea of community service is, the benefits are
undeniable. These benefits are now being recognized by many colleges and universities who made
the decision to make community service a requirement for graduation. This decision has many
critics who believe community service hours take away from study hours. However, if the true

Back in the 1970s, Kenneth Keniston and Mark Gerzon suggested in their paper "Human and social
benefits" that "The critical component of education attempts to expose students to multiple and
conflicting perspectives on themselves and their society in order to test and challenge their
previously unexamined assumptions. It strives to create conditions which stimulate students'
intellectual, moral, and emotional growth, so that they may ground their skills in a more mature,
humane framework of values." (citation) This idea suggests that the goal of education is not to
create robots who can regurgitate facts, but human beings who have rooted the learned facts in real
life experiences and cemented them in personal–character growth. Community service can help
university students achieve this goal in a number of ways. First of all, it does this by sharpening or
uncovering leadership abilities by creating situations that require decision making and problem
solving. While volunteering, a person is often presented with problems that require them to make
executive decisions and learn to make decisions with the team's overall goal in mind. Leadership is
an important skill to have and practicing in the context of volunteering will build a student's
confidence in their leadership ability before they have to apply it in his or her future career.
Secondly, community service teaches students how to be part of a team by showing them how to be
an effective part of a whole. It's a real life situation where students can learn how important it is for
every person working on a task to fulfill their role in a complete and timely way. This skill can also
be learned in a job setting but learning it as a volunteer is less risky because students don't risk being
fired for

make us ponder about how small our world would be if we let fears build up walls in our life. I
enjoyed Rob Green's delivery. He used a story telling atmosphere to his speech and made the
atmosphere feel like we were two old friends talking around the fireplace. His delivery was solid
and I did not feel that any part was distracting. The tone of voice and rate were very conversational
and he used his hands to aid in the story. He did not use his hands too little or too much. Rob walked

I Have The Pleasure Of Volunteering My Service At Bilal...
Over the past semester, I have had the pleasure of volunteering my services to Bilal Oromo Dawa
Center in Fridley, Minnesota as a tutor and person of influence to children ages 6–18. Bilal Oromo
Dawa Center's (BODC) mission statement is as follows: Bilal Oromo Dawa Center is a charitable,
religious, social, cultural, educational nonprofit organization dedicated to serve the Muslim
community. As I have come to find out, BODC is a community center that offers many different
services for all its community members. The services range from tutoring services, weekend school
for Islamic studies, funeral services, Friday congregational prayers, family and marriage counseling,
youth sports, and general community services. BODC is a relatively new organization; however,
they stem from Tawfiq Islamic Center in North Minneapolis. Tawfiq Islamic Center (TIC) has been
open to the community since 2004 and is still open. TIC and BODC share a similar community
member base and actively cooperate to better the community.
I have been aware of TIC since it was opened on inaugural day and practically grew up in that
facility as I attended practically every event they have set up. I attended weekend school during my
adolescence, and I eventually became a teacher's assistant for the program. It would be an
understatement to say that I always felt indebted to the community for playing a large role in my
childhood. I continued to teach Arabic and Islamic studies there for a couple of years before

Identity In A Discourse Community
How might Porter, Rose, and, Swales think about an individual's identity within a larger community,
when entering new writing contexts, who has authority in a discourse community, and, how might
negotiation with authority affect an outsider? When we write an individual piece before we are
aware of discourse communities, we as writers have no rules because we are the writers and readers
of our own works. However, once we as individuals communicate within a community we share
concepts that we understand while learning what a communities' limitations and rules are. Rose
introduces the concepts of identity and authority with individual limitations that we develop over the
course of our writing careers explained in Ridged Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the stifling of
language: A Writer's Block. Rose talks in grave detail on how we as writers have problems that
inhibit us that are habitual to our writing styles. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

more communities in "Intertextuality and the Discourse Community" extends Roses work while
establishing his own ideas about the importance of intercommunication within multiple discourse
communities. However, Porter explains how people as writers are limited to what the community

Examples Of A Community Based Project
My community– based project will involve children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) and their correlating community age groups. The local community center will hold an after
school program for children with ASD and a night program for adults on the spectrum, ages 18 and
older. The after school program will meet Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3–5pm and will
be ran by school aged volunteers. These volunteers will be part of a yearlong project, and optional
summer sessions, that will give them the chance to receive academic and volunteer credit. The night
program, on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday will meet from 6–9pm and will be ran by adult
volunteers in the community. These sessions will focus mainly on social skills and ... Show more

While assisting with homework, dialogue is inevitable. If the children with ASD associate their
homework with more casual dialogue with another student, it may encourage them to want to speak
up and communicate more. They could eventually develop a positive association with schoolwork
because of the casual and non–competitive atmosphere of this environment. The second part of the
sessions would include playtime, these activities would range in variation for each age group but
revolve around sports, music, and art. The community night program for the adults with ASD will
focus on social skills in real–life settings and possible job preparation for those who qualify. This
session will also include adult community volunteers. They will be leading programs that will
encourage participation in real–life social settings, that involve spoken language. If these adults with
ASD are rehearsed and practiced in life like settings, they will become more prepared to face the
same situations in the real world. Depending on the severity of the adult with ASD they will be
placed in a specific group, they will also be monitored to find out what activities they are mostly
interested in. The first half of the session will focus on life skills. These will include classes on self–
care, safety procedures, and home economics, to provide the opportunity for them to become as
independent as possible. For the adults with ASD who qualify to receive job

The Negative And Positive Connotation On Speech Communities
There is negative and positive connotation on speech communities based on what social media
portrays for each group. This issue within society is that we see language as a system and right or
wrong. An example is Slang, African American Vernacular language and also. When hearing slang
people tend to assume that the person or group using it comes from a lower class. One
misconception is that an individual that is using AAE is a product of a lower income community.
Proper and non–proper speech is correlated to economic and social status of speaker. An example
for African American Vernacular language was presented through the video "Who else done messed
up? In this video the substitute was using African American Vernacular English when pronouncing
the student's names there was voice stops devoiced at the end of the names, consonant cluster
deduction and vocalization in names but when giving instruction none of these features appeared.
The negative connotation in this video is the substitute was speaking in commonly used English that
would be considered AAVE but because it is believed that only African Americans use AAVE the
video shows how there was only one person that understood the substitute enunciation and is was a
young African American male. There is a misconception that each country has one language but in
reality, this is a variety of dialects within each one. Another fallacy/ mistaken belief is that an
individual that is using AAE is non–educated, that is not

The Pros And Cons Of Virtual Online Support Groups
In today's new technological age, Virtual Online Support Groups are enabling more people to get
mental health support without stepping inside a therapist's office. Online support groups are a great
alternative for those who may not be ready to attend a meeting in person, or cannot attend due to
meeting time, location, or distance. Connecting with others via the internet allows for a level of
anonymity. The author discusses what a support group is and the benefits and barriers of virtual

The Franklin Road Church Youth Groups Are More Than Just a...
The Franklin Road Church of Christ youth group consists of youth of all ages. The group is divided
into three subgroups: Tots for Christ (TFC), Kids for Christ (KFC), and the Senior Youth Group
(SYG). In particular, for this essay I will be explaining how the Senior Youth Group is a discourse
community. Franklin Road's SYG consists of the ages 11–18. Within the group we do various things
such as going to youth retreats, youth conferences, and many more; just to name a few. The group
has been around for many years, all the way back to when my parents were kids. I have been a
member of SYG ever since I was a baby; therefore I have enough knowledge about how this group
in fact is a discourse community according to John Swales six criteria. ... Show more content on

He expresses that "the goal of the group is to help youth become better leaders in the church as a
Christian" (Stewart). The goal of SYG is tacit. This is because the goal is not written down but it is
known by all members and is something that is stressed, especially to new members. The way that it
is stressed and communicated is by constantly reminding the members to always have a Christian
attitude, to support one another, to be leaders, and to set good examples for younger youth. The
longer you are in the group it becomes something that you just know, it's like embedded in you. This
happens because after hearing it repeatedly over the years it becomes something you know like the
back of your hand. In order for a group to be successful at fulfilling its goal it needs to have some
form of communication. Which leads to Swales' second criterion of a discourse community, the
group should have "mechanisms of intercommunication among its members" (471). What Swales
means by this is that the group must have ways that they communicate with each other: such as
email, meetings, social media, and texting. The Franklin Road SYG definitely requires forms of
communication between the members. The mechanisms used to communicate are texting and
meetings. Texting is used to stay in touch with one another throughout the week when we do not see
each other. We also

Reflection Of A Discourse Community
Introduction
Paul Ryan once said, "Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a
community of persons working together." We do not often realize how important it is for everybody
to work together to achieve a goal. A community is a group of individual people gathered together to
form a whole, like a school, local church, government entity, non–profit organization, sport team,
etc. This whole can make reference to a discourse community.
According to John Swales, discourse communities are unions where individuals have a common
purpose, and communicate to achieve this. There are six characteristics that make up a discourse
community. They are a set of common public goals, mechanisms of communication among its ...

Literature Review
In the article, "The Concept of Discourse Community," John Swales defines what a discourse
community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific
characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication
between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the
level of expertise each member has.
With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse
community from a speech community. In Erik's Borg (2003) article, "Discourse community", the
concept of a speech community "refers to actual people who recognize their language use as
different from other language users." (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities
"recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification" and speech communities'
recruits "its [members] by birth, accident or adoption". Even though speech communities do share
similar linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a
common goal. They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the
utilization of genres like a discourse community does.
Moreover, it is established that genres are "how things get done, when language is used to
accomplish them" (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse

Community Group Observation
Introduction
On August 17, 2015, I had the opportunity to attend Fayetteville Technical Community College's
(FTCC) ribbon cutting of their campus cafeteria. Not only was the ribbon cutting taking place, but
the revealing of the campus cafeteria name was designated for this event as well. Trojan Eatery,
symbolic of the campus mascot, was derived from Michael Morrison a student who submitted the
winning name of the new cafeteria. This paper discusses my reflection of a community group visit
as it relates to the purpose of the group, the theory underpinning the group, a discussion of the
leadership, and other dynamics of the group that are relevant. In addition, five questions are

was also awaiting the arrival of participants such as FTCC campus board members, saving parking
spaces for these individuals, and guiding them to the main event location. In addition, other staff
members assisted with ensuring students and individuals within the community had appropriate
directions to the event. Customer service is an imperative part of any group, and there was a photo
booth set up that allowed participants the opportunity to receive a free portrait keychain that would
assist as a discount ticket when utilized at the Trojan Eatery. It was enjoyable watching the different
dynamics that the group had to offer, the culinary department served fruit, cake, and water free of
charge, campus security had the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the participants and
providing directions, students enjoyed the free food and taking portraits, and staff enjoyed the event
as well.
Five Questions
After having the opportunity to complete my community group reflection visit, there were questions
that needed attention, those being:
1) Where were the contractors, interior designers, and architect? Why were they not included in the
opening of the Trojan Eatery? Were they not invited?
2) How effective has the opening of the Trojan Eatery been in assisting with providing a community
environment for students, faculty, staff, and the residing community?

Family Night Reflection
On Saturday October 28th, 2017 the St.Mary's Syrian Orthodox Church of Washington D.C. hosted
their yearly "Family Night" event. This event was created by the members of the church in order to
spread awareness of the talent and overall culture of our community. Although there was a slight
delay for the event, the performances throughout was very entertaining and informative. It ranged
from dances, songs, to speeches and minor lectures about growing issues in our society today. It
started off with many of the youth showing off their talent mainly through art forms such as singing
and dancing to cultural and religious songs. I myself assisted with the emcees of the night and
partook in the event by acting as Jesus for a skit and submitting a short film alongside friends that
underscored the situation of how a Grandmother from India would interpret the lifestyle in America.
The special talent of all our youth closed with a young boy performing his magic act that wow'd the
crowd. After the acts, the remainder of Family Night included a series of speeches and lectures from
our Priest to other older youth members that discussed growing issues in the world and how we can
act to resolve these issues.

How To Write A Reflective Essay: Can We Control A Community?
Through this class, I understand the general gist of what controls the community in terms of power,
organizational strength, and political influences. I have learned about what factors into certain
decisions that community members make and what the recent outlook of community participation is.
Even though I learned that community participation and involvement in organizations has declined
over the past years, it is hopeful to find ways to combat this social apathy that is happening in
America today. I enjoyed learning about strategies to help groups of people interact and create an
active and responsive community power. The Greene and Haines text was well–organized, strategic,
direct, and practical to the subject matter.

I enjoyed seeing my classmates and friends in this class and felt that within this classroom we could
really make a change for the better. One thing that I felt could be altered to make the class more
beneficial is to reduce the amount of films we watch in class so we have more time to discuss the
reading. The interview and project are definitely good parts to keep for the next time this class runs.
I think more experiential learning opportunities, such as the field trip to Old Church, would be
beneficial. I suggest that the class take a trip to the cemetery or to the Rosenwald school as well and
get a tour of those sites. I think the cemetery would be especially interesting if given tours from both
black and white members of the community, because throughout this class we have talked about
different perspectives and the narratives told with a focus on the marginalized individual. It has
helped me to see that community does focus on the personal and social connections we harbor and
the narratives we bring to the table. Building on these connections, these strategies, and meaningful

Peninsula Elementary's SUN Program Analysis
As mentioned before I volunteer at Peninsula Elementary's SUN program. Many of the workers

the leaders at SUN school all value the same thing, equality. All of the students enrolled in this
program speak english, however, a large percentage come from different cultures and backgrounds
than their fellow classmates. For example, I have a student who's great, great, great.... grandfather
(she wasn't sure exactly what generation he was, but knew that he was from her maternal side of the
family) was a president in Laos. On the other hand, one of my other students who transferred to a
different class is from Mexico and remembers she and her mother sewing her clothing. While these
are only two out of many students, it just goes to show that all come from different cultures and live
different lifestyles, which is great! All who are involved with Peninsula Elementary's SUN program

Discourse Community In America
A discourse community is a group of individual who all have the same shared ideals, beliefs, values,
and rules––all communicated with using the discourse community's own established language. For
example, a grouping of innovative scientists are describing new ways of curing diseases, using their
own terminologies some people may find confusing because they are possibly not a part of that
community overall. A foreigner traveling to America may find the culture to be puzzling and
conflicting with how people abbreviate their words, and enforce their beliefs unto others. That
foreigner will more than likely feel outcasted for being unaware of how Americans run their own
culture. When somebody visits southern parts of the United States, such as ... Show more content on

Jeff Shnurr
Change involving communication, and community requires speaking from experience, listening,
people to carry out the ideas, and being aware of the impact. All three lecturers, Mark Winston, Jeff
Schnurr, and Mark Coffin, helped me to understand this concept through their knowledge of
different types of communities. Mark Winston spoke in his lecture, Bee Time: Lessons from the
Hive, about bees, and his dialogue program, and how they both teach powerful lessons of who we
are as individuals, communities, and a species. Jeff Schnurr's lecture, The Best Leaders I Know:
Learning from Tanzania to Make Change in Atlantic Canada, was about his wanderlust, and tree

Jeff Schnurr began an environmental start–up, working to connect people and their communities to
the forests, and resources that sustain them (personal communication, November 26, 2015). By
doing this, he essentially brought communities together. This is connected with our ideals of
democracy. Democracy isn't just something we should merely have, but something we do – a culture
– where each of us feels a sense of responsibility to those around (Mark Coffin, personal
communication, December 3, 2015). This is a great example of thinking of the community as a
whole. But we must first reflect internally, in order to be an active participant and play a meaningful
part of this living system. In his lecture Mark Winston said that bees have taught him about
communication and common purpose, and have given him a deeper understanding of self,
community and society (personal communication, November 19, 2015). If communities find a
common purpose and communicate how they want the structure and function to be laid out, complex
goals can be met. Communities are not just about people in the same vicinity as you, but often allow
for a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and

Comparing Talhouk's Speech And The Armenian Community Of
Comparing two of my favorite readings, which are Talhouk's Speech and Gregorian's "The
Armenian Community Of Tabriz" it's obvious that these two represent the struggles that we have to
endure in order to preserve our culture and language. This was the main topic that both of the writers
were discussing and trying to solve by fighting back with their individual ways, which in my
opinion, is easily relatable to our case, as Armenians, we went through a lot trying to hold onto our
traditions and protect our culture.
Preserving culture was the main case, but both of the writers had very different ways of
accomplishing it. For example, Talhouk was making it very clear by advising specifically the youth
in the audience to become innovators, because

needing extra support. The elementary or intermediate students are referred for academic support,
behavioral issues, or social issues. It is the PALs job to cater to the need of each student they are
mentoring. The PAL visits each of these students once per week for 30 minutes during the school
day. Each week has a theme that the activity must follow. Some of the weekly themes include math,
reading, crafts, and technology. The PAL plans a new activity for each week to support the need of
each student. Many kids benefit from this program because they have someone who is a good role

Mikey's Speech On Free Community College
The deeply researched public policy speeches were better than I anticipated. I thought that more
people would have relied on their outline. Most of them looked out at the audience rather than at

There were many good central messages with these speeches. One of the speeches that had the best
central message were Mikey's speech. I like how he did his on something very recent, which was the
apple verses FBI case. I liked his because he went in to much detail about it. I also enjoyed Jessica's
central message. I liked that she did hers on a subject that she cares about a lot, which was about the

The visual aids that people used were very helpful in understanding the topic. Mikey's PowerPoint

creative. This is because even though some of his presentation was very graphic I think that was
creative that he used what he did. By doing this, he got everyone's attention.
The delivery and flow of all the speeches were great because so many people were upbeat. One of
the speeches that flowed the best was Mikey's speech because he spiced up his speech, which made
me want to actually hear his speech. Another speech that I felt flowed well and was upbeat was
Anthony's speech on supplements. I think that his was very upbeat because he was not nervous.

James Paul Gee Literacy Discourse And Linguistics
Gee Throughout the journal, "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics" by James Paul Gee, he explains
the concept of Discourse as "'saying (writing)–doing–being–valuing–believing combination' that are
'ways of being in the world'" (Gee 274). I found Gee's view of a Discourse to be too broad of a
concept. By stating that everything is a Discourse, then there is no disconnect from everyday
occurrences. As well as, Gee express that a Discourse is "not by overt instruction" but through
"being a member of a primary socializing group (family, clan, peer group)" (Gee 279). I felt that
Gee's portrayal that being an individual isn't realistic, but being a part of a social group is the only
option. However, I agree that a socializing group can help shape

Three Ways Of Speaking English And Suzanne Talhouk Speech
Language is a major part of everyone's life. Every country or even a community have their own

Jamila Lyiscott speech, "3 Ways of Speaking English" and Suzanne Talhouk speech, "Don't Kill

speaking a particular language. Both of the speeches effectively use rhetorical elements or devices.
Both of these people are well–known speakers, so they have some credibility even before they begin
speaking. When they do start their speeches, both effectively employ emotional appeal, facts and
logic to convey their intended message to the audience.
"3 Ways to Speak English" is a speech given by Jamila Lyiscott at TED talks. The speech she

trilingual speaker, and this is not because she can speak three different language, but she can speak
English in three different ways. She use those ways everyday, while talking to her family, her friends
and in the classroom. Even Though she's fluent in all three tongues, there are times she switch these
ways up or mix them just to add some fun.

Working In A Small Business Analysis

  • 1. Working In A Small Business Analysis First Draft Working In a Small Business Have you ever heard of a speech community? A speech community is a community of people who share the same language and or pattern of language. It is a community where people who are outside that community wouldn't understand the language. Everyone has their own speech community and could have more than one. A community that I belong to is at my work which is a consignment shop. I have worked at this consignment shop for about 3 years now. I like working at this consignment shop because I work with people I love and have known my whole life. The fact that I spend pretty much every day working with people who are like my family is the best. I also love working here because all of the same customers come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since everyone has known each other forever than it's more like a causal language because everyone messes and jokes around with each other but then again we can have business conversations too. For example whenever we are joking around with each other it could be like Missy: "Tiffany did you stink up the bathroom lol (her laughing out loud)" Tiffany: "Oh my gosh no I haven't even went to the bathroom today". Missy would have been literally laughing so hard just because Missy would have just came out and said this by joking with her and her not being serious about it. But we can also have conversations about business for example the other day we were talking about how some of the employees joke around with our missionary but she said that it needs to stop because it hurts his feels and we need to give him respect with all of the good things that he does for other ... • 5. Personal Narrative: The New York Speech Community I am in the New York speech community. The ways I am apart of this community is through the fact that my parents and sister both grew up in New York, although I was born in Arizona I learned the dialect through my family. Growing up I always heard words a certain way, with the New York dialect, therefore I developed it unknowingly into my own dialect. Many people accuse me of faking a New York accent when they find out I was born in Arizona. Being accused of faking a New York accent frustrates me because its something I don't do willingly rather unknowingly. Here is a link to a video teaching people how to speak with a New York accent. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=ejJs6gBfyqw The New York speech community is unique in its phonology ... • 9. Subzero: Speech Community Have you ever thought about how you talk to people? How the way you communicate with people changes depending on who you are talking to and where you are? A speech community is a group of people who share a similar vocabulary and similar rules of language. These communities are often found in schools, places of work, homes, churches, and even on the internet. A speech community occurs wherever there are people. A very interesting speech community in my life happens at the place I work. It's a restaurant called Subzero. Subzero is a restaurant that sells sub sandwiches and ice cream. It is in Shepherdsville next to the Amazon warehouses, on the Cedar Grove Strip. The restaurant is setup very similar to a Subway. The counter is on the left and the dining room is on the right. Glass separates the customer from the all of the meats and vegetables, which the customers get to choose. Subzero is in a strip mall, so the whole front of the store is glass widows, which allows the customers to see everything going on outside. It usually smells like bread because we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Generally Nathan is in his office unless we get too busy and need him to help out in the front of the store. With Subzero being a small business it allows for me to have an unusual speech community with Nathan. It is one where we both recognize that he is my superior, but we also talk to each other in a more casual way. For example he calls me by my nickname such as when a customer comes in and I don't see them he will say "Heads up, Birdie." Also all the employees call Nathan the less formal version of his name "Nate." Nate and I make jokes with each other and talk about things non–work related, like sports and TV shows. Although, when he has to tell me about something that involves the restaurant, then it is a more formal as he doesn't want anything to be misunderstood, but after that it is back to the ... Speech Community Research Paper Transitioning between speech communities A lot of people struggle within speech communities because after high school some people don't go to college so they never progress their speech skills. When a person doesn't progress like there friends they might be embarrassed that they don't understand or is just complained confused what their friends are saying. Struggling within a speech community is not abnormal a lot of people go through a phase like that but they usually find someone to help them through the phase. If you're struggling through a speech community just find a tutor or an English teacher or even a friend to help you transition through to the next speech community in your life. If you never move from one speech community to the next it could affect you in many ways if you have keep improving your way of speech it could open up more job opportunities for you. Because employers look for people who can talk to them and understand what they're trying to say instead of you just looking at them weird because you don't understand them. Also you may find more respect by your peers and teachers because you talking better shows your teachers you have been paying attention to them and not just been wasting their time. The transition could have negative affects on you in your group of friends because you might improve faster then they do and they may exclude you from that group. The future of you depends on how you act if you still act like a highschooler you might find it hard to get anywhere you could have a lot of street smart like Malcolm X and become successful. • 17. Tesco Tesco speech in Bakersfield Dear residents of Bakersfield. My name is Allan Marsh. I'm a big adversary of Tesco's almost monopoly like expansion on the British market. Furthermore, I was the mastermind of a successful, and very similar, campaign like this. I led the campaign called "Herne against Tesco". As with your case Tesco also wanted to close our local pub, and build an express store. For starters we tried to be reasonable and appeal to their logical side, by pointing out that it would be meaningless for Tesco to have a store there, due to parking limitations around the building. However, our callout was ignored completely. They continued their construction plans. Therefore, we had to take drastic measures. So I gathered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, it won't be a walk in the park! Tesco is legally covered and knows their way around every crack of the construction law. They know that pubs are ideal targets for express stores, due to the small amounts of square feet, which allows them to avoid the construction permission as well as closing on Sundays. Therefore, we cannot fight them legally; we just have to show them our discontent of their stores. But why am I such an adversary of Tesco you might ask. I feel they destroy hundreds of small communities by overpowering and siphoning the money away from the locals with promises of more jobs etc. However, that is an entirely obscure postulate from Tesco in my opinion. On the contrary I think they rob the locals of jobs, by overpowering the small grocery– and retail stores, and destroying the character of beautiful small British communities. And it is happening every day, right before our eyes, not just in Britain but also abroad – Tesco is taking over. Furthermore, people have a tendency to tug the problems under the carpet, and be wrapped up in their own life's. But how do we stop Tesco's monopolization? As mentioned earlier it is not a walk in the park, it's going to take hard work from every community with this exact problem. Nevertheless, there is an answer; the answer is a united effort. Alone no one will hear us, especially not a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Chameleon Effect: The Perception-Behavior Link And... It was a brutally cold November morning, and my roommate and I talked in hushed voices as we hid under our covers in dread. Her voice was warm and robust, tinged with a slight Nigerian influence. Our tones were calm and slow, still waking from our short sleep. Not five minutes in, however, this rare moment of peace was sharply shattered by a banging at the door. As the stomps of a cranky Tyler entered the room, we knew our avoidance was over. Immediately, Tyler began to yell at my roommate, Oluwafolabomi, in a deep, loud voice, thick in its Liberian influence. The ensuing debate between the girls, over topics I could barely discern, bore no resemblance to the previous conversation. Oluwafolabomi's voice was now deep, vivid, and utterly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Questioning the fundaments of community building is the start of the solution. Of these building blocks, perhaps the most significant and unrecognized is the chameleon effect. The chameleon effect subconsciously communicates community, and subconsciously marks its outsiders. It is therefore imperative that people begin to become aware of their use of this effect. Admittedly, it is more than mildly ironic that to urge awareness of a subconscious action. But implicit biases, or attitudes or stereotypes that affect the way we perceive and interact with others, are created in the subconscious ("Understanding implicit bias"). Likewise, implicit biases must be combatted by thorough examination of the subconscious. The chameleon effect and the implicit biases that may guide it must be thoroughly examined in order to gain an awareness of our actions. It is recognition of why such actions occur that we can begin to truly control them. Communities are important. They foster feelings of support, preserve culture, and validate the worth of the shared characteristic. In critical times, we must examine our subconscious actions to promote these benefits of communities, as well as overcome their inheent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Analyzing Paul Robert's Speech Communities Do you ever think about the way you speak and why? Well, Paul Robert does an excellent job explaining why people use the dialect they use in Speech Communities. He discusses that people change their use of language throughout their lives to conform to either society or to what kind of person they want to be, or to just conform to who they need to be at a particular moment, in which I agree. People's choice of language, including myself, are affected by many of their surroundings, such as where they live and grow up at, their peers, and a person's work place. I was born and raised in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, which has greatly affected my language in my younger years and when I go home. Pittsburgh has its own unique words and pronunciation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul Roberts did a great job explaining how different parts of one's life, known as communities, affects their language development and their language at a given time. Growing up in Pittsburgh, attending a performing arts high school, and currently working at job where I talk to many different people has changed my speech and has extended my vocabulary. Now I use more of my Pittsburgher language when I am at home or surrounded by friends from Pittsburgh as well. I rarely use my theater and dance jargon around fellow dancers and theater goers. Now with my current job I am learning new terminology for different careers. I know that I will be exposed to many more communities and my language will adjust to my new surroundings. • 29. High School Discourse Analysis The Discourse community that I selected to present is my high school AP English three course. Although a substantial amount of knowledge was obtained in this class, the growing problem of a lack of dedication was harming it. According to the author, James Paul Gee, in "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics: Introduction", my AP English three class is a secondary dominant Discourse as it possessess "the (potential) acquisition of social 'goods' (money, prestige, status, etc.)" This course is designed to help students earn college credits through preparation for a challenging exam. In order to fulfill this purpose, assignments are vigorously administered to enhance the three genres writing, reading, and speech. Students begin to retain what they have learned and apply this in the classroom, developing an English dialect within the division of labor between the student and teacher that contains intense words and ceases to have slang. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ranging from writing sixteen page essays to interpreting twelve pages of texts constantly, students expend their energy without any real break to recover. This results in the degradation of grades and learning capabilities as individuals become increasingly stressed to continue on. Teachers acquire a difficulty to perform their jobs because students stop desiring to understand. This can be extremely harmful when AP exams take place towards the end of the year since students are often too exhausted by this point to perform well on the test. If students are tremendously tired, the "shared objective" of a Discourse community as expressed by John Swales in "Characteristics of a Discourse Community", will inevitably fail. • 33. Morgan's Imagined Communities 1. "Imagined communities," according to Anderson, are a form of speech communities created by the mass–production of shared media. They are "imagined" because members will never meet all other members face–to–face. The Morgan piece on speech communities begins by describing a music video, which itself begins with two rappers speaking on the phone in different languages in different countries. After a conversation, the two meet–up in person and begin the song. Morgan describes this as a speech community formed around a shared style of music, with members of the community belonging to various demographics. This would fit Anderson's model of imagined communities as the community is formed around a shared consumption of a form of media with members who will never interact with most other members. Anderson's model is primarily criticized for two reasons: it is too vertical and it ignores hierarchy within communities. 2. A person's linguistic repertoire encompasses all forms and levels of languaging practices that individual has access to. Using this term allows a broader understanding of one's access to various languaging practices as opposed to the understanding offered by the term "language." Those who need help are more than welcome to receive it, no matter who gives it to them. However, on a normal day, people tend to separate from those who differ in race, make offensive comments, or inflict violence because of ethnicity. In the end, we are all one race: the human race. I was able to experience a moment where race and religion did not matter. Congressman Randy Weber was instantly approached by the media. Mr. Weber said, "It's unbelievable that all of these young volunteers of different races and religions have gathered together to help others that were affected by the hurricane." The dialogue he had with the interviewer was refreshing. The judge of the local court, Terry Lawrence, stayed back for several hours and assisted us with collecting the tickets and transporting the water cases into cars. He was excellent with communicating with the locals. His enthusiasm and high spirit allowed the line to operate at a quicker pace. The bright smiles that radiated from the people kept the volunteers pushing in the hot weather. Some of the people who were receiving the supplies parked their cars to help volunteer. After a couple of hours of moving hundreds of water pallets, I was relocated in the front of the supply rotation. My job was to escort families throughout the supply line. The first family I met left an impression on me. The Mexican mother was holding her son, who did not have any articles of clothing on but a diaper. She was about to burst into tears when she received the supplies. I carried a thirty–six–water bottle pack to her car and loaded her box of supplies into the back. "A speech community exists when people share norms about how to use talk and what purposes it serves." (Wood, 2014). This is why speech communities are formed from social locations; people who socialize in the same places often develop the same understandings of communication. One type of speech community is a gender speech community. Each gender has their own speech community, which is one reason why people of opposite genders often misunderstand each other (Wood, 2014). Gender socialization begins in children. Studies have shown that the differences between the games that boys and girls play teach them when and how to communicate. Girls often play games like ... The vineyard community is a safe environment for children between kindergarten through 12th grade between the hours 3 pm– to 6pm. The vineyard is a community center for children where they engage in different actives, where they do their homework, worship and enjoy time together. The vineyard provides a variety of services for the community. One thing I liked about the vineyard is how much the community cares and value the children receive from the volunteers and staff. The mission of the vineyard is that the children from all different schools are brought together for a couple of hours to engage in different activities to learn and grow as a whole. The vineyard has an enormous impact on the community it keeps the children safe, and helping them with their everyday life afterschool. For example, helping them with their homework making the children think about certain situations, also they feed the children dinner which is a very lovely. During my time at the vineyard the population of children I worked with ranged from kindergarten to 3rd graders. I had a lot of one on one time with one 2nd grader who always loved to show me what he could do also what he was struggling with. The vineyard really did bring all the families together. Thanks to the teen activists of the world, problems such as lack of access to an education and too much electronic waste in the environment are in the process of being solved. Teen activists are brave and they persevere. Teen activists do not take no for an answer; instead, they face the obstacles in their way, learn from their mistakes and stand up for what they believe in. Dowden English 1302 12 August 2015 Definition Essay: College Community Service Requirements Community service is a term that will bring a different image to mind for every person who hears it spoken. It can make someone think of volunteering weekends at soup kitchens, court–ordered highway clean–up, or even random acts of kindness within a community. Whatever a person's idea of community service is, the benefits are undeniable. These benefits are now being recognized by many colleges and universities who made the decision to make community service a requirement for graduation. This decision has many critics who believe community service hours take away from study hours. However, if the true definition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Back in the 1970s, Kenneth Keniston and Mark Gerzon suggested in their paper "Human and social benefits" that "The critical component of education attempts to expose students to multiple and conflicting perspectives on themselves and their society in order to test and challenge their previously unexamined assumptions. It strives to create conditions which stimulate students' intellectual, moral, and emotional growth, so that they may ground their skills in a more mature, humane framework of values." (citation) This idea suggests that the goal of education is not to create robots who can regurgitate facts, but human beings who have rooted the learned facts in real life experiences and cemented them in personal–character growth. Community service can help university students achieve this goal in a number of ways. First of all, it does this by sharpening or uncovering leadership abilities by creating situations that require decision making and problem solving. While volunteering, a person is often presented with problems that require them to make executive decisions and learn to make decisions with the team's overall goal in mind. Leadership is an important skill to have and practicing in the context of volunteering will build a student's confidence in their leadership ability before they have to apply it in his or her future career. Secondly, community service teaches students how to be part of a team by showing them how to be an effective part of a whole. It's a real life situation where students can learn how important it is for every person working on a task to fulfill their role in a complete and timely way. This skill can also be learned in a job setting but learning it as a volunteer is less risky because students don't risk being fired for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Identity In A Discourse Community How might Porter, Rose, and, Swales think about an individual's identity within a larger community, when entering new writing contexts, who has authority in a discourse community, and, how might negotiation with authority affect an outsider? When we write an individual piece before we are aware of discourse communities, we as writers have no rules because we are the writers and readers of our own works. However, once we as individuals communicate within a community we share concepts that we understand while learning what a communities' limitations and rules are. Rose introduces the concepts of identity and authority with individual limitations that we develop over the course of our writing careers explained in Ridged Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the stifling of language: A Writer's Block. • 85. The Negative And Positive Connotation On Speech Communities There is negative and positive connotation on speech communities based on what social media portrays for each group. This issue within society is that we see language as a system and right or wrong. An example is Slang, African American Vernacular language and also. When hearing slang people tend to assume that the person or group using it comes from a lower class. One misconception is that an individual that is using AAE is a product of a lower income community. Proper and non–proper speech is correlated to economic and social status of speaker. An example for African American Vernacular language was presented through the video "Who else done messed up? In this video the substitute was using African American Vernacular English when pronouncing the student's names there was voice stops devoiced at the end of the names, consonant cluster deduction and vocalization in names but when giving instruction none of these features appeared. The negative connotation in this video is the substitute was speaking in commonly used English that would be considered AAVE but because it is believed that only African Americans use AAVE the video shows how there was only one person that understood the substitute enunciation and is was a young African American male. There is a misconception that each country has one language but in reality, this is a variety of dialects within each one. The group is divided into three subgroups: Tots for Christ (TFC), Kids for Christ (KFC), and the Senior Youth Group (SYG). In particular, for this essay I will be explaining how the Senior Youth Group is a discourse community. Franklin Road's SYG consists of the ages 11–18. Within the group we do various things such as going to youth retreats, youth conferences, and many more; just to name a few. The group has been around for many years, all the way back to when my parents were kids. I have been a member of SYG ever since I was a baby; therefore I have enough knowledge about how this group in fact is a discourse community according to John Swales six criteria. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He expresses that "the goal of the group is to help youth become better leaders in the church as a Christian" (Stewart). The goal of SYG is tacit. This is because the goal is not written down but it is known by all members and is something that is stressed, especially to new members. The way that it is stressed and communicated is by constantly reminding the members to always have a Christian attitude, to support one another, to be leaders, and to set good examples for younger youth. The longer you are in the group it becomes something that you just know, it's like embedded in you. This happens because after hearing it repeatedly over the years it becomes something you know like the back of your hand. In order for a group to be successful at fulfilling its goal it needs to have some form of communication. Which leads to Swales' second criterion of a discourse community, the group should have "mechanisms of intercommunication among its members" (471). What Swales means by this is that the group must have ways that they communicate with each other: such as email, meetings, social media, and texting. The Franklin Road SYG definitely requires forms of communication between the members. The mechanisms used to communicate are texting and meetings. Literature Review In the article, "The Concept of Discourse Community," John Swales defines what a discourse community is, and yet, he strongly argues that a discourse community must meet six specific characteristics. A social group must have a set of common goals, methods of intercommunication between its members, feedback, the usage of genres, a determined lexis, and a rank that defines the level of expertise each member has. With that being said, Swales highlights the need of a clarification of what differs a discourse community from a speech community. In Erik's Borg (2003) article, "Discourse community", the concept of a speech community "refers to actual people who recognize their language use as different from other language users." (p.398) Additionally, Swales states that discourse communities "recruits its members by persuasion, training, or relevant qualification" and speech communities' recruits "its [members] by birth, accident or adoption". Even though speech communities do share similar linguistic rules among its members, norms, and theories, they do not share common a common goal. They lack communication among its members, and lastly, they do not accomplish the utilization of genres like a discourse community does. Moreover, it is established that genres are "how things get done, when language is used to accomplish them" (Martin, 1985). Swales (1990) indicates that discourse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, a grouping of innovative scientists are describing new ways of curing diseases, using their own terminologies some people may find confusing because they are possibly not a part of that community overall. A foreigner traveling to America may find the culture to be puzzling and conflicting with how people abbreviate their words, and enforce their beliefs unto others. That foreigner will more than likely feel outcasted for being unaware of how Americans run their own culture. When somebody visits southern parts of the United States, such as ... • 125. Jeff Shnurr Change involving communication, and community requires speaking from experience, listening, people to carry out the ideas, and being aware of the impact. All three lecturers, Mark Winston, Jeff Schnurr, and Mark Coffin, helped me to understand this concept through their knowledge of different types of communities. Mark Winston spoke in his lecture, Bee Time: Lessons from the Hive, about bees, and his dialogue program, and how they both teach powerful lessons of who we are as individuals, communities, and a species. Jeff Schnurr's lecture, The Best Leaders I Know: Learning from Tanzania to Make Change in Atlantic Canada, was about his wanderlust, and tree planting experience, and how that lead him to help start, with the Pemban community, tree ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jeff Schnurr began an environmental start–up, working to connect people and their communities to the forests, and resources that sustain them (personal communication, November 26, 2015). By doing this, he essentially brought communities together. This is connected with our ideals of democracy. Democracy isn't just something we should merely have, but something we do – a culture – where each of us feels a sense of responsibility to those around (Mark Coffin, personal communication, December 3, 2015). This is a great example of thinking of the community as a whole. But we must first reflect internally, in order to be an active participant and play a meaningful part of this living system. In his lecture Mark Winston said that bees have taught him about communication and common purpose, and have given him a deeper understanding of self, community and society (personal communication, November 19, 2015). If communities find a common purpose and communicate how they want the structure and function to be laid out, complex goals can be met. Communities are not just about people in the same vicinity as you, but often allow for a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and ... • 129. Comparing Talhouk's Speech And The Armenian Community Of Comparing two of my favorite readings, which are Talhouk's Speech and Gregorian's "The Armenian Community Of Tabriz" it's obvious that these two represent the struggles that we have to endure in order to preserve our culture and language. This was the main topic that both of the writers were discussing and trying to solve by fighting back with their individual ways, which in my opinion, is easily relatable to our case, as Armenians, we went through a lot trying to hold onto our traditions and protect our culture. Preserving culture was the main case, but both of the writers had very different ways of accomplishing it. For example, Talhouk was making it very clear by advising specifically the youth in the audience to become innovators, because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. Informative Speech About The PAL Program Informative Speech Hi my name is Morgan Delgado and my informative speech is about the PAL program. David Green said, "You need an attitude of service. You're not just serving yourself. You help others to grow up and you grow with them." Many high school students say they are too busy with schoolwork and extracurricular activities to find time to volunteer. What if there was a program that allowed students to help others during the school day? The Peer Assistance and Leadership or PAL program for short, allows students to help others while having fun, earning school credit for the course, and getting volunteer hours. The PAL program provides students with an opportunity to help at risk students, volunteer in the community, and participate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each PAL is assigned 3–5 students, called PALees, who are identified by the teacher or counselor as needing extra support. The elementary or intermediate students are referred for academic support, behavioral issues, or social issues. It is the PALs job to cater to the need of each student they are mentoring. The PAL visits each of these students once per week for 30 minutes during the school day. Each week has a theme that the activity must follow. Some of the weekly themes include math, reading, crafts, and technology. The PAL plans a new activity for each week to support the need of each student. Many kids benefit from this program because they have someone who is a good role model for them as well as someone they can count on. PALs not only make a difference in the lives of students, but also in the community. PALs participate in community service project including collecting school supplies, toy drives, and gift packages for the armed forces. PALs also put on events for special needs students such as APE Field Day for all the special needs students in the district. At this event students get to play games and have a chance to win prizes. • 137. Mikey's Speech On Free Community College The deeply researched public policy speeches were better than I anticipated. I thought that more people would have relied on their outline. Most of them looked out at the audience rather than at their outline. I think that people were less nervous and more prepared this round of speeches. There were many good central messages with these speeches. One of the speeches that had the best central message were Mikey's speech. I like how he did his on something very recent, which was the apple verses FBI case. I liked his because he went in to much detail about it. I also enjoyed Jessica's central message. I liked that she did hers on a subject that she cares about a lot, which was about the common core. I feel that she got her message out very well. I feel the same with Nick's speech on free community college. I feel that he also got his point out very well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The visual aids that people used were very helpful in understanding the topic. Mikey's PowerPoint was a good example of this. He used many pictures to bring humor to the situation. I think that that was very creative and it was fun to watch and hear about his topic. I found Mike's speech to be very creative. This is because even though some of his presentation was very graphic I think that was creative that he used what he did. By doing this, he got everyone's attention. The delivery and flow of all the speeches were great because so many people were upbeat. One of the speeches that flowed the best was Mikey's speech because he spiced up his speech, which made me want to actually hear his speech. Another speech that I felt flowed well and was upbeat was Anthony's speech on supplements. I think that his was very upbeat because he was not nervous. Another speech that I thought was very outgoing and energetic was Kylie speech on invasive species. I think that she was upbeat because she was prepared for it. • 141. James Paul Gee Literacy Discourse And Linguistics Gee Throughout the journal, "Literacy, Discourse, and Linguistics" by James Paul Gee, he explains the concept of Discourse as "'saying (writing)–doing–being–valuing–believing combination' that are 'ways of being in the world'" (Gee 274). I found Gee's view of a Discourse to be too broad of a concept. By stating that everything is a Discourse, then there is no disconnect from everyday occurrences. As well as, Gee express that a Discourse is "not by overt instruction" but through "being a member of a primary socializing group (family, clan, peer group)" (Gee 279). I felt that Gee's portrayal that being an individual isn't realistic, but being a part of a social group is the only option. However, I agree that a socializing group can help shape ... The motto stresses the need for everyone to work together, and discourages individualism. Their society believes that when an "individual feels, the community reels", meaning when an individual begins to feel real emotion, society behaves in a disorderly manner. When one longs to achieve happiness and meaningfulness, they may abandon everything they know in the pursuit of discovering their passion. In this pursuit one may encounter a cultural conflict that is hazardous to themselves and society, thus creating disorder in the world in which they call their home. Jamila Lyiscott speech, "3 Ways of Speaking English" and Suzanne Talhouk speech, "Don't Kill Your Language" on TED talks, addresses different issues related with language and the way of speaking a particular language. Both of the speeches effectively use rhetorical elements or devices. Both of these people are well–known speakers, so they have some credibility even before they begin speaking. "3 Ways to Speak English" is a speech given by Jamila Lyiscott at TED talks. The speech she discusses, her being articulate and giving example about it. She starts off by stating that she's a trilingual speaker, and this is not because she can speak three different language, but she can speak English in three different ways. Even Though she's fluent in all three tongues, there are times she switch these ways up or mix them just to add some fun.
