An unexpectedly useful inequality
                                               Pham Huu Duc

Abstract. A remarkable inequality by T. Andreescu and G. Dospinescu turns out to be
useful in solving and obtaining a number of interesting results.

1 Introduction
The following inequality by T. Andreescu and G. Dospinescu appears with the fol-
lowing solution in [?] and turns out to be very useful in proving and discovering a
number of interesting results:

Theorem 1. Let a, b, c and x, y, z be positive real numbers. Then
                       x(b + c) y(c + a) z(a + b)
                               + + ≥ 3(ab + bc + ca).
                        y+z z+x x+y

Proof. The inequality is homogeneous in a, b, and c, so we may assume that
a + b + c = 1. We rewrite the inequality as follows
          x y z ax by cz
            + + ≥ + + + 3(ab + bc + ca).
         y+z z+x x+y y+z z+x x+y
We apply the Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality to obtain
                                                     2 2 2
     ax by cz x y z
        + + ≤ + + a2 + b2 + c2 .
    y+z z+x x+y y+z z+x x+y
Applying the Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality one more time we get
               2 2 2
        x y z 3√
                   + + a2 + b2 + c2 + ab + bc + ca +
       y+z z+x x+y 4
                                                             2
         3√ x 3 3
     + ab + bc + ca ≤ + + a2 + bc + bc
         4 cyc
                                                y+z 4 4 cyc cyc cyc

                                                 2 2 2
                                          x y z 3
                            = + + + .
                                         y+z z+x x+y 2

Thus it suffices to prove the following inequality
                   2 2 2 2
          x y z 3 x y z
                       + + + ≤ + + ,
         y+z z+x x+y 2 y+z z+x x+y

Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 1
which is equivalent to
                3 yz xz xy
                  ≤ + + .
                4 (x + y)(x + z) (y + z)(y + x) (z + x)(z + y)

Clearing denominators this reduces to

            3(x + y)(y + z)(x + z) ≤ 4(x2 y + y 2 x + y 2 z + z 2 y + x2 z + z 2 x)

or
                       6xyz ≤ x2 y + y 2 x + y 2 z + z 2 y + x2 z + z 2 x,
which is true from the AM-GM inequality, and we are done.

A remarkable feature of this inequality is that no matter how complicated ex-
pressions x, y, and z may be, they all vanish in the right-hand side. Using the ideas
from the proof above, we can deduce yet another useful and well-known result:

Theorem 2. Let a, b, c and x, y, z be nonnegative real numbers. Then

           x(b + c) + y(c + a) + z(a + b) ≥ 2 (xy + yz + zx)(ab + bc + ca).

The proof of this inequality can be found in [?]. The following sections demon-
strate the uses of Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 in solving numerous known inequalities.
Furthermore, we present strengthenings of some of these results and some new in-
equalities as well.

2 Applications
     1. Let x, y, z be positive real numbers. Prove that

         xy(x + y − z) + yz(y + z − x) + zx(z + x − y) ≥ 3(x3 y 3 + y 3 z 3 + z 3 x3 ).

       Solution. Observe that
                                                      x(y 3 + z 3 ) y(z 3 + x3 ) z(x3 + y 3 )
       xy(x+y−z)+yz(y+z−x)+zx(z+x−y) = + + .
                                                        y+z z+x x+y

       Setting a = x3 , b = y 3 , c = z 3 and using Theorem 1 we get

              x(y 3 + z 3 ) y(z 3 + x3 ) z(x3 + y 3 )
                           + + ≥ 3(x3 y 3 + y 3 z 3 + z 3 x3 ),
                y+z z+x x+y
       and we are done.

Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 2
2. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers such that ab + bc + ca = 3. Prove that

                                 a(b2 + c2 ) b(c2 + a2 ) c(a2 + b2 )
                                            + 2 + 2 ≥ 3.
                                  a2 + bc b + ca c + ab

      Solution. Let x = a(b2 + c2 ), y = b(c2 + a2 ), and z = c(a2 + b2 ). Then

                           x(b + c) a(b2 + c2 )(b + c) a(b2 + c2 )
                                    = = .
                            y+z b(c2 + a2 ) + c(a2 + b2 ) a2 + bc

      Using Theorem 1 we have

                 a(b2 + c2 ) b(c2 + a2 ) c(a2 + b2 )
                            + 2 + 2 ≥ 3(ab + bc + ca) = 3.
                  a2 + bc b + ca c + ab

   3. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that

             b2 + c2 c2 + a2 a2 + b2 3 (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 )
                     + + ≥ −1 .
             a(b + c) b(c + a) c(a + b) 2 abc

      Solution. Note that
                                      b2 + c2 bc c+a a+b
                                 1+ = +
                                      a(b + c) ab + ca b c

      Applying Theorem 1 for x = bc, y = ca, z = ab we have

                      b2 + c2 √ (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b)
         3+ ≥ 3 + + .
                cyc
                      a(b + c) bc ca ab

      Furthermore,

             (a + b)(a + c) a(a + b + c) (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 )
                            = 1+ =3+ ,
       cyc
                   bc cyc
                                                       bc abc

      hence

                                 b2 + c2 3(a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 )
                      3+ ≥ 9+
                           cyc
                                 a(b + c) abc

                                              3 (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 )
                                          ≥ 1+ ,
                                              2 abc

where the last inequality follows from the AM-GM inequality. Subtracting 3
from both sides yields the desired result.

Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 3
4. Let n ≥ 2 be a real number and let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that

                   + + ≥ .
             a+b b+c c+a a+b+c

Solution. Applying Theorem 2 we get

                (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b)

      It remains to prove that

                 an bn cn 3 an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1

           (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b) 4 a+b+c

      Our inequality reduces to

                                                 3 an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1
      (an (b+c)+bn (a+c)+cn (a+b)) ≥ (a+b)(b+c)(c+a)
                                                 4 a+b+c
      or

       4 (an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )(ab + bc + ca) − abc(an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 ) (a + b + c)

       ≥ 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )((a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) − abc).
      It suffices to prove that

       (an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )(a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) ≥
                        abc[4(an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 )(a + b + c) − 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )].

      Using the AM-GM inequality, (a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) ≥ 9abc, hence it remains
      to prove that

                  3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 ) ≥ (an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 )(a + b + c),

which is true from Chebyshev’s inequality.

3 Conclusion
We have shown the usefulness of Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 in providing elegant
solutions to a number of interesting inequalities, very difficult to prove by other
means.
We end this article with a list of further inequalities which can be solved by
using the ideas presented above.

    1. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that

              ab(a3 + b3 ) bc(b3 + c3 ) ca(c3 + a3 )
                          + + ≥ 3abc(a3 + b3 + c3 ).
                a2 + b2 b2 + c2 c2 + a2

    2. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that
                         a+c b+a c+b

Unexpected ineq

  • 1. An unexpectedly useful inequality Pham Huu Duc Abstract. A remarkable inequality by T. Andreescu and G. Dospinescu turns out to be useful in solving and obtaining a number of interesting results. 1 Introduction The following inequality by T. Andreescu and G. Dospinescu appears with the fol- lowing solution in [?] and turns out to be very useful in proving and discovering a number of interesting results: Theorem 1. Let a, b, c and x, y, z be positive real numbers. Then x(b + c) y(c + a) z(a + b) + + ≥ 3(ab + bc + ca). y+z z+x x+y Proof. The inequality is homogeneous in a, b, and c, so we may assume that a + b + c = 1. We rewrite the inequality as follows x y z ax by cz + + ≥ + + + 3(ab + bc + ca). y+z z+x x+y y+z z+x x+y We apply the Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality to obtain 2 2 2 ax by cz x y z + + ≤ + + a2 + b2 + c2 . y+z z+x x+y y+z z+x x+y Applying the Cauchy-Schwarz Inequality one more time we get 2 2 2 x y z 3√ + + a2 + b2 + c2 + ab + bc + ca + y+z z+x x+y 4 2 3√ x 3 3 + ab + bc + ca ≤ + + a2 + bc + bc 4 cyc y+z 4 4 cyc cyc cyc 2 2 2 x y z 3 = + + + . y+z z+x x+y 2 Thus it suffices to prove the following inequality 2 2 2 2 x y z 3 x y z + + + ≤ + + , y+z z+x x+y 2 y+z z+x x+y Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 1
  • 2. which is equivalent to 3 yz xz xy ≤ + + . 4 (x + y)(x + z) (y + z)(y + x) (z + x)(z + y) Clearing denominators this reduces to 3(x + y)(y + z)(x + z) ≤ 4(x2 y + y 2 x + y 2 z + z 2 y + x2 z + z 2 x) or 6xyz ≤ x2 y + y 2 x + y 2 z + z 2 y + x2 z + z 2 x, which is true from the AM-GM inequality, and we are done. A remarkable feature of this inequality is that no matter how complicated ex- pressions x, y, and z may be, they all vanish in the right-hand side. Using the ideas from the proof above, we can deduce yet another useful and well-known result: Theorem 2. Let a, b, c and x, y, z be nonnegative real numbers. Then x(b + c) + y(c + a) + z(a + b) ≥ 2 (xy + yz + zx)(ab + bc + ca). The proof of this inequality can be found in [?]. The following sections demon- strate the uses of Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 in solving numerous known inequalities. Furthermore, we present strengthenings of some of these results and some new in- equalities as well. 2 Applications 1. Let x, y, z be positive real numbers. Prove that xy(x + y − z) + yz(y + z − x) + zx(z + x − y) ≥ 3(x3 y 3 + y 3 z 3 + z 3 x3 ). Solution. Observe that x(y 3 + z 3 ) y(z 3 + x3 ) z(x3 + y 3 ) xy(x+y−z)+yz(y+z−x)+zx(z+x−y) = + + . y+z z+x x+y Setting a = x3 , b = y 3 , c = z 3 and using Theorem 1 we get x(y 3 + z 3 ) y(z 3 + x3 ) z(x3 + y 3 ) + + ≥ 3(x3 y 3 + y 3 z 3 + z 3 x3 ), y+z z+x x+y and we are done. Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 2
  • 3. 2. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers such that ab + bc + ca = 3. Prove that a(b2 + c2 ) b(c2 + a2 ) c(a2 + b2 ) + 2 + 2 ≥ 3. a2 + bc b + ca c + ab Solution. Let x = a(b2 + c2 ), y = b(c2 + a2 ), and z = c(a2 + b2 ). Then x(b + c) a(b2 + c2 )(b + c) a(b2 + c2 ) = = . y+z b(c2 + a2 ) + c(a2 + b2 ) a2 + bc Using Theorem 1 we have a(b2 + c2 ) b(c2 + a2 ) c(a2 + b2 ) + 2 + 2 ≥ 3(ab + bc + ca) = 3. a2 + bc b + ca c + ab 3. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that b2 + c2 c2 + a2 a2 + b2 3 (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 ) + + ≥ −1 . a(b + c) b(c + a) c(a + b) 2 abc Solution. Note that b2 + c2 bc c+a a+b 1+ = + a(b + c) ab + ca b c Applying Theorem 1 for x = bc, y = ca, z = ab we have b2 + c2 √ (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b) 3+ ≥ 3 + + . cyc a(b + c) bc ca ab Furthermore, (a + b)(a + c) a(a + b + c) (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 ) = 1+ =3+ , cyc bc cyc bc abc hence b2 + c2 3(a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 ) 3+ ≥ 9+ cyc a(b + c) abc 3 (a + b + c)(a2 + b2 + c2 ) ≥ 1+ , 2 abc where the last inequality follows from the AM-GM inequality. Subtracting 3 from both sides yields the desired result. Mathematical Reflections 1 (2008) 3
  • 4. 4. Let n ≥ 2 be a real number and let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that an + bn bn + cn cn + an 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )(an + bn + cn ) + + ≥ . a+b b+c c+a a+b+c Solution. Applying Theorem 2 we get bn + cn bn cn 1 1 = n + n ≥ cyc b+c cyc b+c b c a2n bn cn b2n cn an c2n an bn 1 1 1 2 + + + + (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b) bn cn cn an an bn an bn cn =2 + + (an + bn + cn ). (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b) It remains to prove that an bn cn 3 an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 + + ≥ · . (a + b)(a + c) (b + c)(b + a) (c + a)(c + b) 4 a+b+c Our inequality reduces to 3 an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 (an (b+c)+bn (a+c)+cn (a+b)) ≥ (a+b)(b+c)(c+a) 4 a+b+c or 4 (an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )(ab + bc + ca) − abc(an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 ) (a + b + c) ≥ 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )((a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) − abc). It suffices to prove that (an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )(a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) ≥ abc[4(an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 )(a + b + c) − 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 )]. Using the AM-GM inequality, (a + b + c)(ab + bc + ca) ≥ 9abc, hence it remains to prove that 3(an−1 + bn−1 + cn−1 ) ≥ (an−2 + bn−2 + cn−2 )(a + b + c), which is true from Chebyshev’s inequality. • 5. 3 Conclusion We have shown the usefulness of Theorem 1 and Theorem 2 in providing elegant solutions to a number of interesting inequalities, very difficult to prove by other means. We end this article with a list of further inequalities which can be solved by using the ideas presented above. 1. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that ab(a3 + b3 ) bc(b3 + c3 ) ca(c3 + a3 ) + + ≥ 3abc(a3 + b3 + c3 ). a2 + b2 b2 + c2 c2 + a2 2. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Prove that a+c b+a c+b ab + bc + ca ≥ 3abc(a + b + c). b+c c+a a+b 3. Let a, b, c be positive real numbers. Then for any real number k, the following inequality holds ak + bk bk + ck ck + ak 8(a + b + c)(ak bk + bk ck + ck ak ) + + ≥ . a+b b+c c+a (a + b)(b + c)(c + a) References [1] Andreescu T., Cˆ ırtoaje V., Dospinescu G., Lascu M., Old and New Inequal- ities, GIL Publishing House, 2004 [2] Vedula N.
