How Managers Can Help Employees
Set Goals

you can spend your life running up and down
the field and never score.”

As a manager, providing your understanding of
both an employee's professional skills and the
company's targets helps your employees set better
goals.
Helping Employees Set Goals
Be SMART
• Help employees choose attainable
goals that can be measured on an
ongoing basis.
• Consider using SMART goals.
• The idea here is that the more
specific, measurable, achievable,
realistic, and timely goals are, the
more attainable they will be.
Continuity is key
• Continuous consideration throughout
the year can help you and the employee
identify any obstacles and address them
early on.
• Help employees create a plan for
success and periodicallycheck in to
see if they’re staying on track.
Provide resources
• Suggest resources that help your
employees meet their objectives.
• A resource could come in the form of
a mentor, additional training, or a
new project.
Make it meaningful
• Connect employee goals to larger
company goals to make them more
meaningful.
• An employee who understands how
their goals play a role in company
success is more likely to be engaged
in accomplishing that objective.
Helping Employees Stick with Goals
Consider the following key questions…
What's accomplished on the
way to the goal?
• Even if the goal isn’t met yet, a lot of
good can come from setting that
goal.
• Ask, “What did you accomplish along
the way?”
Why weren’t the goals met?
• Being able to look at the goal
journey beyond personal ability can
keep employees motivated.
Many factors can impact goal
achievement:
• Lack of effectiveness
• Time constraints
• Lack of resources
• High turnover rate
• Changing role or responsibilities
• Lack of understanding of goal
What can I do to help?
• Failing to keep up with goals can be
caused by many of reasons, such as:
• Goals are too diffificult
• Goals are too vague
• Too many goals
• Resistance to trying
• There’s not one consistent reason for
every different employee.
• Ask employees what they expect
from you, communicate your
support, and remind them that you
are their partner in this.
Attaining our goals can be challenging.
Start 2021 off right by setting your employees up
to achieve their goals.

  • 2. As a manager, providing your understanding of both an employee's professional skills and the company's targets helps your employees set better goals.
  • 5. • Help employees choose attainable goals that can be measured on an ongoing basis.
  • 6. • Consider using SMART goals. • The idea here is that the more specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely goals are, the more attainable they will be.
  • 8. • Continuous consideration throughout the year can help you and the employee identify any obstacles and address them early on.
  • 9. • Help employees create a plan for success and periodicallycheck in to see if they’re staying on track.
  • 11. • Suggest resources that help your employees meet their objectives. • A resource could come in the form of a mentor, additional training, or a new project.
  • 13. • Connect employee goals to larger company goals to make them more meaningful.
  • 14. • An employee who understands how their goals play a role in company success is more likely to be engaged in accomplishing that objective.
  • 15. Helping Employees Stick with Goals Consider the following key questions…
  • 16. What's accomplished on the way to the goal?
  • 17. • Even if the goal isn’t met yet, a lot of good can come from setting that goal. • Ask, “What did you accomplish along the way?”
  • 18. Why weren’t the goals met?
  • 19. • Being able to look at the goal journey beyond personal ability can keep employees motivated.
  • 20. Many factors can impact goal achievement: • Lack of effectiveness • Time constraints • Lack of resources • High turnover rate • Changing role or responsibilities • Lack of understanding of goal
  • 21. What can I do to help?
  • 22. • Failing to keep up with goals can be caused by many of reasons, such as: • Goals are too diffificult • Goals are too vague • Too many goals • Resistance to trying
  • 23. • There’s not one consistent reason for every different employee. • Ask employees what they expect from you, communicate your support, and remind them that you are their partner in this.
  • 24. Attaining our goals can be challenging. Start 2021 off right by setting your employees up to achieve their goals.
