3. Beware SUGAR that burns EYES. Diabetes a
health Tsunami which cripple the whole
body silently. Affects all vital organs - eyes,
lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, skin, blood
vessels cause numbness, lack of sensation of
skin, heart attacks, paralysis, legs swelling,
depression many more problems. It licks &
bites all organs over a period. The eye
problems of diabetics are mostly due to lack
of awareness. Many people in middle age
loose sight, earning opportunities, burden
to family & society.

4. Where is the link?
Retina: Is a thin delicate layer in the back
of eye like a cinema screen the objects
reflection will fall on retina by signals from
brain when you see them. So retina is very
vital for vision.
Diabetes: Excess blood glucose is diabetes.
This destroys the retina. To understand this
you must know the natural biological
functions of our body and the changes due
to diabetes in them are important.

5. Each cell of our body need nutrients, energy
these will come through blood circulating all
over body through blood vessel net work.
Excess blood sugar flow in these vessels are
diseased whole body is affected. Retina
contains micro blood vessels which are

I Stage: Blood vessel walls in Retina get
damaged. From there fats, fluids leak on to
retina. Called non proliferate stage.
Patient vision is reduced but not lost.
II Stage: Vessels shrunk & get closed to
replace them new micro vessels form &
blood ooze on retina this is a dangerous
stage. Called as proliferate stage here
vision is completely lost.

8. Changes are many types: Diabetes may
damage retina in many ways let us see it.
Blood Vessel Walls: May swell become thin
in few areas there they may protrude called
Micro aneurisms. First stage in
Retinopathy. Become alert help to prevent
vision loss.
Leakage of fats, fluids: Because of leaks
they accumulate in the middle of retina
called macula (maculopathy) it swells cause
pressure the part will not function. Here the
surrounding vision is ok but center part of

retina is very important to help them. Even
after reducing the swelling the vision may
improve slightly but will not come back to
normalcy. It is better to avoid, prevent this
stage through early diagnosis by expert Dr
Clogged Blood Vessels: When blood vessels
are closed oxygen supply is reduced to fill
the gap new vessels are generated. For this
vascular endothelial growth factors are
released. But the new vessels are thin &
weak the chances of their leakage is high

10. The leaked blood accumulates clogs in the
fluid of retina (Vitreous hemorrhage) this
may cause sudden loss of vision.
Retina Peals out: For diabetes this is last
stage in retinopathy. The front layer of
retina having fluid blood leaks, clogs, peals

Retinal damage is irreversible can be
prevented through proper treatment.

11. Diagnostic Tests: Observing retina directly is
very vital through fundus examination
called Fundoscopy. Direct, indirect fundus
cameras are very helpful. Through slit lamp
fundus can be observed very closely in
various angels. If there is any defect in
macula is noticed. Frequent, periodic tests
will help in early diagnosis.
Florosis Angiography: This test is a must for
diabetics having changes in vessels of retina
called retinal angiogram. In this first a dye
(sodium florosis) is injected into palm vessel

12. which reaches retina in 15-20 secs. Then
retina is quickly photographed locating
vessel deformities, leakages, closed blood
vessels in retina. Developing new blood
vessels allied info can be gathered. This help
to understand the progress, degeneration
and stage of retinopathy in patients.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Infra
red rays are focused on retina by refraction
the scan picture is taken this will show any
fluid accumulations in retina, swelling in
macula. Therapy is given as per the stage.

13. Treatments: If there are no changes, leaks in
retina no treatment is needed diabetes
must be kept under control. Any damages,
defects are noticed need specific therapies
under expert care.
Laser Therapy: If there are any defects,
leaks they have to be treated with laser
burn them therapy is called Macular photo
coagulation. If not complications will widen.
Pan retinal coagulation: With this damage
can not be reversed but can prevent further
damage reduce more oxygen need of retina

14. Anti VEGF Inj: They will prevent new vessel
formation then use lasers as per the need.
Vitrectomy: Some times surgery is needed to
correct defects in retina called vitrectomy
by using silicon oil or gas which will hold
retina from detaching.
Many people think that they will regain
vision wonderfully it is not true. Mostly they
prevent further damages. If diabetes is not
under control problems may recur. Hence
constant monitoring under expert care is
very essential.
