4. Background
MS in environmental engineering (Politecnico di Milano, 1993)
PhD in Hydrology (Politecnico di Milano, 1997)
Specialized in geographic information systems
23 years of professional experience, in different sectors:
university, technology transfer, consulting, and project
management (in corporate environments).
Since 2011: free lance, based in Southern Tuscany.
Since 2006: in addition to environmental engineering, projects on
promotion and protection of lesser known resources in the fields
of culture, environment, and open innovation

A small network of professionals, associations, research
organizations, SMEs, with a strong grassroots base
...and more: the sum of subjects mentioned in www.pibinko.org
and www.attivarti.org should give the picture
The Team in 2017
7. 7
What are we not
* academics
* environmentalists
* avant-garde
* tree huggers or sunset worshippers
But we have
a research and a publication track record
a line of action on environment
an innovation component (more than once with pretty creative
stuff...so they say)
A passion for what we do, how we do it, and the places, the people...
etc.
8. 8
Our mission
Promotion and protection of lesser known assets
in the areas of culture, environment, and open
innovation (CAIL)
through
Research (not just scientific research)
Innovation -at times “re-discovery”- and
knowledge transfer
Communication and engagement
Often culture, environment,
open innovation and music
are intertwined in our activities
9. Our mapping and performing
arts/media working group
Photo coverage of events
Videos (two for GFOSS.it, three
about OSM)
Radio (three-month OSM campaign
in Milano with a local radio as media
partner)
Songs (i.e. “the neogeographer
song”, Nov. 2009, and more)
“musical geomatics” at FOSS4G-IT
2017
...all documented on www.pibinko.org
Many technical experts are accustomed to multimedia and/or music (we occasionally see
reports and anecdotes), but we put a special effort on this...
10. 10
Always with a soundtrack
Listened to (since 1970), played (since 1986) and shared with a purpose (since 2000)
11. 11
At times the soundtrack becomes...
...another version of a socio-
economic analyis of a rural area...
12. 12
Il contadino magro (part 1/2)
Il contadino magro sta osservando il cielo
Il cielo sputa acqua sporca sul contadino
magro
All’improvviso il denaro inizia a bruciare
Il contadino contento ritorna a dormire
The skinny farmer is gazing at the sky
The sky spits dirty water on the skinny farmer
He loves his land more than any woman
And protects his rooster as if it were his child
He feels safe with his watchdog out at night
And hates his relations who are waiting for his
death, it ain’t right
All of a sudden the farmer gets up from his bed
Preparing a fire with all the money he’s made
Look at that money: it’s starting to burn, going
to waste
The farmer feels happy and goes back to sleep
and to rest
The skinny farmer
Non ci resta che ridere, 2015
13. 13
senza rose e fiori, né foto a colori, poesie
di famiglia
Insieme al suo cane, coperto da piume di
gallo
così dov’è andata la sua anima, l’hanno
bruciata
adesso è solo, è solo nel vento con il suo
denaro
lontano dal cane, lontano dalla terra,
lontano dal gallo
lontano dalla terra, lontano dal suo cane,
e dal suo gallo
The relations are mourning around the fire
Behind them the dog is barking at the
skinny farmer
Who no longer moves, nor laughs nor
actually speaks or feels
But he wrote to be buried inside his stable
No roses, no flowers, nor color photos nor
family poems
With his old dog, covered in rooster
feathers
But where is his soul – somebody burned
it
Now he’s on his own, floating in the wind,
with all his money
Away from his dog, away from his land,
away from his rooster
Away from his dog, away from his land,
and from his rooster

Let’s define our “rural”
Villages and hamlets, population
typically below 1000 (at times
below 100)
Population is typically 80% less
than in the Sixties
Nothing is less that 30 minutes
drive from something else
Things happen generally around
400 m a.s.l.
September-through-March is VERY
slow and different than April-to-
August

When we say “no country for old men”...
Italy:
G8 country
Tuscany: “ahhh...so beautiful...ahh the food...ahh
the landscape”
But in the Southern part of the region:
30-hour power outages now and then
Mobile coverage still patchy..GSM in several
areas
30 km from the Mediterranean, 43°
latitude, but Nature (not the Journal) can and
will challenge you
Wolves are on the prowl
The low level of infrastructure may not help
the unprepared, but has its “up” sides
