WHAT MAKES GREEN CHIMNEYS UNIQUE?
THE ANIMAL CONNECTION
Green Chimneys offers nationally and internationally
recognized animal-assisted activities, therapy and
education that, with therapeutic supervision, entrust
emotionally traumatized children with the care and
responsibility for the well-being of an animal. Children
learn to connect with another living being, learn to care,
are able to nurture, begin to feel successful and
reestablish the basis for emotional relationships.
360° INTENSIVE MILIEU THERAPY
Green Chimneys provides a unique immersion into an
enriched and supportive environment for each child.
Teams of specialists -- including medical staff, social
workers, teachers and child care professionals -- are
supported by experts in animal-assisted activities,
horticulture therapy, outdoor education and life skills
training. This caring and supportive approach prepares
each young person in crisis to address his or her own
challenges and develop skills to become a successful
member of society.
ACCELERATED CARING ENVIRONMENT
Green Chimneys maintains an open campus, intentionally
intermingling resident children and adolescents with
visitors from the local community and guests from all over
the world. This sense of campus-wide public access helps
with the careful process of normalization. Children feel
less isolated and gain confidence through interactions
with the public. Leading a public tour, helping a visiting
group complete a community service project or sharing
animals with visiting school groups teaches our children
important social and leadership skills.
WORTH BUILDERS
Green Chimneys staff members have developed and
utilize an evaluation and assessment system (Green
Chimneys Longitudinal Assessment Scales or GLAS) that
identifies and focuses on each child's strengths. Staff seek
to identify the special qualities in each child and build on
these strengths to create a sense of value. Finding the
worth in each individual and allowing the child to
recognize his or her own strengths lays the foundation for
success.
EARLY RESTORATION
Green Chimneys believes in early intervention and accepts
children as young as 5 in its residential and day programs.
We become the first responders for these young children
in crisis at an early stage. Increasingly our campus is seen
not as the last option, but as the first choice to help these
vulnerable.

2. WHAT IS GREEN CHIMNEYS?
Founded in 1947, Green Chimneys Children's Services
operates a Residential Treatment Facility (RTF), Residential
Treatment Center (RTC) and Therapeutic Day School
program on the main campus in Brewster, NY. We restore
possibilities and create futures for children with emotional,
behavioral, social and learning challenges.
All our treatment programs are committed to the
integration of the natural environment, including a
therapeutic farm and wildlife program. On our campus,
children interact with nature and animals to learn and heal.
The lessons learned from the animals become stepping-stones
for better human connections.
FARM INTERNSHIPS
A Green Chimneys Children's Services Nature-Based
Program Activities Immersion Internship can
be a life-changing and profound training
opportunity for the right person. The covet-ed
position of Green Chimneys Farm Intern
offers a well-grounded introduction to the
theoretical and practical principles of incor-porating
animals, plants and the natural
world in the re-education, socialization and
treatment of children experiencing crisis in
their lives.
Interns are immersed into the therapeutic milieu of Green
Chimneys Farm and Wildlife Center, the organic gardens
and campus life. Through supervised and guided participa-tion,
interns are able to work with our children, learn the
practical application of animal-assisted education, and gain
experience in animal and plant care in an internationally
known therapeutic milieu.
Intern Focus Areas
• ”Learn and Earn” Worker: Interns work with
individual children through a therapeutic animal-assisted
activity support program.
• Class Support: Interns are taught to skillfully apply
animal-assisted education and activities and horticulture
education to groups of students as teaching assistants
in farm, riding and garden classes.
• Animal Husbandry: Interns learn how to provide
humane and species-appropriate care for farm animals,
horses, wildlife and a variety of other species.
• Program Instruction: Our farm intern experience can
provide an important introduction to safely and
successfully replicating animal-assisted programs in
other settings.

Visas: Since January 2006, our farm internship has been a
formal training program requiring international interns to
obtain a J-1 visa. International interns accepted into the
program will be guided through the J-1 visa application
process by Green Chimneys’ Human Resources
Department. The cost of this visa (generally $1,000), visa
processing and health insurance for J-1 international interns
will be paid for by Green Chimneys. Interns are responsible
for paying all deductibles. Domestic interns, or those with
other types of visas, are responsible for their own health
insurance.
Interns are responsible for their own travel arrangements,
any fees required at the embassy in their country, and any
additional living expenses while residing at Green
Chimneys.
The visitors visa is very restrictive and heightened security has
resulted in denial of admittance into the country. The J-1 is
much more versatile and will allow you to legally work in the
United States and receive a social security card. Please note:
not all J-1 visa applicants are granted a visa.
Academic Credit & Supervision
The farm internship has satisfied academic requirements of
several colleges, universities and some vocational schools.
Interns must coordinate their academic requirements with
Green Chimneys staff during the application process.
Supervision is provided by Michael Kaufmann, Director of
the Green Chimneys Farm and Wildlife Center, and farm
education program manager Miyako Kinoshita.
To Apply
If you are interested in an internship, please forward a
