NARRATIVE FILMS
MIL 12/MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY 12
INSTRUCTOR: MONETTE T. ROSELLO
ZAMBOANGA CHONG HUA HIGH SCHOOL
WHAT ARE NARRATIVE FILMS?
 Narrative Films = Fictional Films
 Films that tell fictional or fictionalized stories, events or narratives
 believable narratives and characters help convince the audience that the unfolding fiction is real
NARRATIVE ELEMENTS IN FILM
 Plot
 The plot is the sequence of the story, the events in the order in which they take place.
 Setting
 As in fiction, setting establishes who, what, when and where, as well as creating or evoking atmosphere. Setting
can construct a mental landscape which mirrors that of a character's condition. Setting can and frequently does
function symbolically.
 Characterization
 While CHADSBOAT (an acronym for remembering the elements of characterisation. This page yet to be
developed.) embodies how characters can be constructed in fiction, in film it is largely through action, dialogue
and other characters that we learn about character. Setting plays a part in film as well. Some film contains
characters thoughts.
CHADSBOAT
 CH: Character
 A: Author
 D: Dialogue
 B: Background
 O: Others
 A: Appearance
 T: Thoughts
NARRATIVE ELEMENTS IN FILM
 Structure
 As in fiction, film contains exposition, complications and rising action where the protagonist is in conflict with a
variety of forces, a climax and a resolution. However, film conventions are extremely flexible and many films vary
this formulaic structure.
 Symbolism
 The visual and aural medium of film lends itself to the use and repetition of images and sounds called motifs.
These act symbolically, carrying strong embedded meanings to influence the viewer
 Point of View
 objective point of view (generally a long shot, standing back observing the action)
 third person perspective, looking from the position - but not through the eyes of - any character. Obvious
examples are over-the shoulder shots, or hand-held camera moving with a group of characters. Like third person
narration in fiction, we are involved in the action with certain characters, but removed some distance from them.
 subjective narration, where we look at the world through the eyes of a character, seeing what they see. Characters
speaking to this character will actually look at the camera, creating the impression that you, the viewer are that
character.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
 Cinematography is the science or art of motion-picture photography by recording light or other
electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of
a light-sensitive material such as film stock.
 Film stock is an analog medium that is used for recording motion pictures or animation. It is a strip or
sheet of transparent plastic film base coated on one side with a gelatin emulsion containing
microscopically small light-sensitive silver halide crystals.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
 The overall look of a film that illustrates the setting and visual style of the story. Includes the design of
the sets, location choices, choice and supervision of props. Close collaboration with the DP and the
Director concerning color and mood are an important part of this job.
 Three (3) Main Elements of Production Design:
 The Style
 The Time Period
 Representation
