Turkey has a population of around 77 million people, with 25 million under the age of 25. Reasons for high youth unemployment include a lack of job experience, problems with the educational system and foreign language skills, low salaries, and issues with Kurdish populations. While the government supports youth entrepreneurship through founding programs, bureaucracy makes the process of starting a business complicated. Additionally, older generations in Turkey still tend to distrust youth and see them as irresponsible and not caring about important traditions and religion, leading to generational conflicts.

In response to recession, the youth unemployment rate reached its peak in 2010 – at 33 per cent it was one of the highest in the EU Young people face a twice or two and a half times higher unemployment risk than adults. Higher youth unemployment rates do reflect the difficulties faced by young people in finding a job, especially during the reduction of workplaces. Young people tend to be the last ones hired and the first ones fired. Probably, the reason why few young people turn to the Employment Office is that they are mostly not entitled to unemployment insurance benefit since they lack the required employment record and have not paid unemployment insurance premiums for the required period. They are only entitled to the flat- rate unemployment assistance benefit, which is very low probably not enough to motivate young people to register as unemployed.
