Gender = a construction
(that does not have to be awful)
“Gender is not physical at all, but
is altogether insubstantial. It is
soul, perhaps, it is talent, it is
taste, it is environment, it is how
one feels, it is light and shade, it
is inner music, it is a spring in
one’s step or an exchange of
glances, it is more truly life and
love than any combination of
genitals, ovaries, and hormones”
                Jan Morris Conundrum
The paradox of femininity
“One thing I’ve noticed is that universally there are a
lot more options for being fabulous if you’re
feminine, no matter what kind of body you inhabit.
It’s a double standard that’s endlessly fascinating to
me. Like if you’re a boy dressing up—no matter how
REAL you are—you’re still ‘fierce.’ But if you’re a
trans guy passing as a dude, you just kind of
disappear. And if you’re flashy, like drag king-style, it
    tends to be a joke—like fashion-wise it’s not as
    respected or something.”
                                                  Wu Tsang
                                               wutsang.com
Gender as play
“People of all sexes have
the right to explore
femininity, masculinity—
and the infinite variations
between—without
criticism or ridicule.”

what does this have to do with peer
education?
everything!
Peer education is a tool for transmission of
knowledge.

And skills.

And it’s also one that builds capacities and
attitudes.
You, peer educator*, are a role model.

What you say, matters.
Your attitudes matter.

Pay attention on what and how you say.
You have the power.

*youth worker, youth focal point, fellow volunteer, etc.
There are countless ways how gender comes
into peer education:
  .
  the topics you work with,
  the methodology,
how do you appear to identify yourself gender-wise,
how you treat people depending on their gender,
how you talk about sex and gender,
  what you wear,
  examples from life you give,
  pop-culture references you mention,
  words you choose,
the color coding you assign to exercises,
  the pronouns you use,
if you divide the audience by gender,
if you flirt with your audience,
the things you choose not to bring up…
please, pay attention!
             read a lot
     think about yourself, too
   talk with like-minded people
talk with different-minded people
         read some more
            experiment

       rethink your ways
      apologize, if needed
             change
           stay aware

Editor's Notes

  1. Lets agree that there are differences between men and women. And lets agree that its not about sex. The difference in treatment is about gender, about things we have learnt, about what we have learned to be feminine and whats masculine. My presentation comes from a place, a region where – in a more dire way than no place else - those constructed notions show how important they are. Talking about Europe, even if we focus on Eastern Europe alone where a lot of social injustice and practical obstacles exist, you see that it is not all about access to health care and supplies or access to accurate information. And there you see that people – supposedly optimally equipped to make the informed, reasoned and owned choices we keep talking about – just wont do that. And me and my colleagues suspect that at least one of the reasons for them to do so has to do – as in every other place in the world – with the notions of gender and the gender inequality.
  2. You are certainly aware that the discourse all around is about how you can have it all and how all depends on you. And that if you try hard enough or if you want something for real, you can have it. Off course, its nice to not be told that you cant do sth because of your assigned sex, your appearances. But the social imperatives havent gone away. They’ ve changed. Now you might look around and realize that suddenly you are expected…
  3. TO DO IT ALL, TO BE IT ALL! And it is tough. It is illogical and mind-boggling. And scary. And may lead to this feeling of just not doing enough. Not being perfect and superwoman enough. We are talking about real, structural and cultural barriers that all people face. Nevertheless, and again lets agree, that women and girls are the ones structurally pressured to perform perfection and having it all as part of identifying as a woman.
  4. From this musings IHBG comes from. The idea of exploring the femininity while trying to let go at he same time. Working with the space that lets each person to be whatever they want to be. Assuming that thinking about, exploring and playing with gender is the portal to freedom. Well, as with all such things, this radical freedom and self-consciousness and self-love are long term goals, ideal types, wishful thinking. But we think that the awareness is what matters. Asking questions.
  5. Femininity as performance. The high expectations that are connected with it.
  6. Coming from a region where the access to supplies is not that much of a priority, where it’s much more about changing attitudes and building the capacity to negotiate, to insist on condom use (as the observed reality is that, although the supplies are available, people chose not to use them). In our work we have been linking this up with work with gender stereotypes and gender roles as ones that assign a passive role to women and girls. Therefore, it has a strong gender component regarding on building a gender-esteem: being able to treat gender not only as an obstacle but as an enjoyable and powerful asset to draw strength and resilience from.
  7. The power to change and save lives. It might not be obvious. But, if by bringing your feminist agenda into the room you empower just one girl to negotiate condom use or to say no to sex when she does not feel like having it, that is a lot. The some goes for all the people who do not identify as women too, btw. Being a peer educator, being someone that works in the field of sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, you have the power to enable spaces where people can explore their experiences and the obstacles they meet. You have the power to show that gender is not rigid, that it can be twisted, turned and bended, that we are not our gender… by just being yourself. You can be the one opening a space where gender can be dismissed or embraced (while being aware of its relativity).
  8. I know we are all experienced here, that’ s why you are here. But I beg you, please, pay attention. We all have been gender-wise brain-washed. It does require a lot of conscious effort to change the things you took for granted! Experiments with gender are easy to do and the internets are full of genderbenders, never before this has been so easy.
