We begin a series on what is takes to start a business, the decision to do so was to share
my personal journey towards starting a business, failing, falling , successes. I am aware
some many things have been written about starting a business. However I am of the belief
some things have not been documented which has many left bewildered. I also wish to
add my faith inclination to my writings which has been helpful to me and I know it works.
I pray to be consistent and also it blesses you to get up and start the journey to
entrepreneurship if that is your calling Peace.
What is business?
What is business? When people say they are called to start a business do they really know
what is means. Whether it is a small business or entrepreneurial venture all connotes
business. Why I started with this was to expose anyone reading what the description is
really about. Failure to know what a term stands for may result to misuse. Many have
been ridiculed, many have given up or feared to start because either due to the lack of
knowing what business is all about which leads to the improper way to handle business
or seeing the failure of many especially loved ones, colleagues lose all and become abject
source of mockery; deter them from starting.
Despite the statistics of failure in business, there are still those who have succeeded and
made giant strides without any hidden evil hand at work (especially if you are from my
part of world ). Without much ado what is business? According to Merriam-Webster
Business is the activity of making, buying, or selling goods or providing services in
exchange for money.
 A BUSINESS IS AN ACTIVITY. If the line of business you are engaged in or
wish to embark in doesn’t involve activity (being busy) it is not a business

 An activity of making, buying or selling or providing services. To be in business you
are either making something, or buying and selling or providing a service. From
the first point; business is an activity, to make or buy and sell or provide services
you must be consistently active. The dictionary depicts similar words of active as
follows;
 mobile,
 energetic,
 agile,
 sporty
 lively
 Hardworking
 Industrious
 Tireless
 Finally whatever activity you are engaged in whether making something,
whether buying, selling, or providing services, there must be an exchange for
money. Money has changed; nowadays you can have a bank transfer without
having physical cash. However payment has been made. To be in business
requires you must have an activity whether making something , buying and
selling or providing a service, in addition you must understand that you must
be mobile, hardworking, industrious (steady, persistent) in whatever you
decide to choose as an activity(business). You cannot afford to be lazy(not liking
to work hard or to be active, slow moving, idle) According to my Christian bible
in one of the its books Proverbs 26 v13-15 The lazy person says, "There is a lion
outside! I will be killed in the street!" Many who failed may have been lazy or
inactive or as another proverbs 28 v19 New living version Translation
A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies ends up in
poverty. (There has been times I chased fantasies either because I felt my
business was not generating the kind of money I wanted, but I thank Almighty
God for HIS MERCIES ). Finally you should know for you to be in business you
must exchange whatever activity you are engaged in for payments at the right
time to continue the activity. Failure to do so means you are engaged in a hobby
not a business.
You must demand payments, because you are responsible to yourself to meet your
needs, your family, your community, your state(your taxes) so if you don’t wish to ask
for payments, maybe business is not meant for you.
