The Impacts of Technology on Students’’ Education Comment by pckmobile50: Papers that follow the MLA style of formatting include, in the upper left hand corner of the page, your name, your teacher’s name, your class, and the date. Immediately after this you must place the title centered on a separate line. The header of an MLA paper is flush right and contains your last name and the page number. In addition, MLA papers are to be double spaced, have a ½ inch indent on the first line of each paragraph, and be in a serif font (such as Times New Roman). Therefore, I have ensured your paper meets these guidelines.
Students in the classroom are increasingly on their smartphones and laptops each day. The communication between teachers and students is slowly but surely deteriorating. Using technology such as cell-phonescellphones and computers is becoming the norm, and is used to access social media at anywhere and anytime is becoming the norm. From an educational point of view, the use of technology presents numerous problems to both teachers and students inside and outside of athe classroom. The communication between teachers and students is slowly but surely deteriorating. With theThe introduction of technology within the classroom environment, there have been has resulted in negative consequences of technology on education. ModernizationThe modernization of education has caused three main problems offor the educational learning process. These problems of technology are reflected through the negative impacts of technology inon students’’ education. Students are receiving less knowledge because of the impacts of technology, they are not learning as much as they could be learning without technology, and students isare limiting their potential by using technology for their educational goals because it, which allows students to study using using less effort on their part. Comment by pckmobile50: Please note that MLA doesn’t allow text to be justified (MLA Handbook 4.2) so I aligned it left. Comment by PCKMobile36: Here you set this up as though this is the order you are going to discuss the issues in, however that is not the case throughout the body of the text.
Using technology in education decreases the amount of knowledge that is gained by students in the classroom. Before the use of technology such as the Internet, students faced more challenges in listening to teachers, focusing their attention, understanding new information, retaining it, and analyzing information. As students use electronic devices more, they will have more difficulties with being absorbed in their studies. Although students try to learn through their smart phonesmartphones and computers, those electronic devices have more negative effects on education than advantages.
The process of educational modernization leads to a decrease in the amount of knowledge provided and gained in the classroom and has negative c.

Impacts of Technology in Classrooms
In over forty years, researchers have shown the impacts of technology and have been so essential in our day to day lives. Technology affects many areas of a society both positively and negatively. In modern –days, most schools have embraced technology as an aid for teachers and students to enhance their schoolwork. Students get more engaged where technology is involved, thus making them retain more information (Page 2012). However, some argue that technology has brought more harm than good and a few will be discussed in this essay. My stand is dwelling on the advantageous side of technology in empowering every party involved.
Technology is a medium for providing distance learning. In olden days, students could take distance courses at community colleges or universities after which they would receive course documents in the mail. They would then be required to send assignments to their teachers at the educational institution, and this process could be long and complicated. In this era, students can take courses over the internet which is so convenient and still qualify to work in the fields related to those courses (Page 2012). This has made it easier for working students who cannot get access to educational institutions.
However, technology is sometimes misused by learners. In as much as technology has drastically impro ...

Impacts of Technology in Classrooms
In the last four decades, continuous research has been conducted on the impacts of technology in the lives of people. While no consensus has been reached, it may be argued that in many aspects of society, technology has both positive and negative impacts. Educational institutions have embraced technology to some extent in the management of the academic load of both the teachers and the students. According to a 2012 study, students are more engaged when technology is involved in their education process which results in improved retention of the learned information (Page). Other studies argue that more harm has resulted from the adoption of technology. While this article hypothesizes that technology in education is advantageous as it empowers all individuals involved in the learning process, the paper will address some of the aspects highlighted regarding the adoption and use of technology.

Education and Technology
The benefits of technology cannot be denied in how they help students getting their work done both in and outside of the classroom. Technology also saves students time by helping them submit their work when it’s due. Even with these great benefits, using screen-based-devices can distract students from staying focused. Handwriting notes is more efficient than typing it because the notes will be more specific. In this essay, I will discuss the benefits of screen-based-devices in education and their disadvantages. I will discuss a potential policy which California State University Long Beach should adopt in order to prevent students from multitasking and staying focused on getting one task done at a time. Administrators and instructors should develop ways to help students stay engaged in class by providing them with a productive environment for learning with the use of screen-based-devices.
Students who try to multitask can’t get things done in a timely manner since their brain can’t process two different things at the same time. According to Dr. Adam Gazzaley, who is a neuroscientist at the University of San Francisco, the prefrontal cortex faces challenges when the brain tries to process multiple tasks at the same time. Studies show that the brain works in harmony with the prefrontal cortex when one task is being accomplished. However, as soon as students start multitasking, the right hemisphere and left hemisphere of the brain are forced to work independently which stops them from getting things done on time. However, if they focus on doing schoolwork or taking notes individually from start to finish, they won’t be worried or concerned about checking their devices. In order for the prefrontal cortex to process things in harmony with the rest of the brain, students should minimize the use of screen-based-devices while they are in class or doing homework so that they can get tasks done on a timely manner.
Another disadvantage about screen-based-devices is the ability to retain information during lectures. Students spend the entire class time taking notes on their electronic devices without paying full attention to the material being taught. I have experienced this issue myself when I would be taking notes during class, and when I went home to study. I had a hard time understanding my notes because I didn’t spend as much time paying attention during class. With some professors drawing diagrams or not having uniform notes, I would not be able to copy down the information on my screen-based-device as quickly or in a manner that would make as much sense as what the professor wrote on the board. I also would get distracted as soon as I received a notification from either Facebook, Twitter or when I receive an important email. I would often find myself switching from one screen to another and oftentimes forget that I am in class. It came to a point where I prefer ...

What are the Pros and Cons on how Technology has changed teaching techniques for teachers?
Solution
List of the Advantages of Technology in Education
1. Promotes independent learning in students
The internet is a treasure trove of information. Practically anything you need to know can be
found online. Although there is a question of the credibility of the source and the data provided,
it can still serve as an educational resource for students. Even without assistance from parents
and teachers, students can just look up their lessons online.
Unlike regular textbooks, electronic books and web-based content are updated in real time,
feeding students with the most current information they can get their hands on, helping them
become more knowledgeable even outside the classroom setting.
2. Prepares students for the future
From the way technological advancements are going, it is obvious that the future will be digital
and technology-focused. If students are well-versed on using technology to collaborate and
communicate as early as now, they will not have trouble fitting in, competing and finding jobs in
the future. Being familiar with using at least one form of technology at an early age will help
them become comfortable using it, and eventually develop other skills necessary to handle other
innovative devices and processes.
3. Has the potential to lower textbook and tuition prices
With resources more accessible and in great abundance, the cost of textbooks is likely to
decrease. It is also possible that students may no longer need to buy a textbook, if it is converted
into digital format. The actual books can stay in the classroom, while the content is saved on a
student’s computer.
Tuition will also decrease when learning is done online, rather than inside the classroom. By
taking out the factors that contribute to a higher tuition fee, such as utility bills and transportation
allowance of teachers, the overall cost of education will be lower.
4. Allows teachers to create an exciting way to educate students
Gone are the days when the only tools for teaching are limited to books, a blackboard or
whiteboard, and a chalk or markers. With technology integrated to education, teachers can now
incorporate images, videos and other graphics when delivering lessons. Specific websites, apps
and programs will also enable teachers to vary how they provide instructions. This creates an
exciting learning environment and promotes interest in education in general.
Other tools available for teachers include Smart Boards (interactive whiteboards), email Skype,
and PowerPoint.
5. Encourages development of new teaching methods
Rather than spend an hour or so talking while the students listen, or have them read an entire
chapter in silence, teachers and professors now have the option to use advanced teaching
methods, such as podcasts, blogs and social media. When working with a particular group or
one-on-one, teachers can take advantage of web conferencing technologie.

EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY
ON EDUCATION
Technology has changed the way we live. It has greatly impacted different facets of life and redefined living. Technology plays an important role in every part of life. Several manual tasks can be automated, thanks to technology. Many difficult and critical processes can be carried out with more and greater efficiency with the help of modern technology.
Technology has been of great importance in school and it has changed the field of education. With the onset of computers in education, it has become easier for tutors to have more knowledge and therefore pass it down to the students. The process of teaching and learning are more efficient and enjoyable with the use of technology. Students will not only have computers to help them with their schoolwork, but they will use the internet to do their research while teachers use it to enhance t.

Technology in Education
The topic regarding technology being used in education has been highly debated with some individuals supporting the thoughts while others highly refuting it. However, one thing that is evident is that in this age and era, technology has been touching many people’s lives in all rounds. It means that even if technology is not introduced in education, in one way or another, the children/students will find themselves interacting with it. Today, mobile phones are perfect example of technology which is owned by almost everyone across the world. At the same time, since the introduction of computers, many people today have their own ones which they use to acquire information from the internet or use for personal benefits such as playing games. Based on these underlying facts, it will not be fair for schools to be lagging behind in integrating technology in their classroom learning to offer better learning experience for both the teachers and the students (Edutopia 1). It is important for the students to be allowed to explore in details the potentials of technology for learning while the teachers become aware of its benefits in teaching. When technology is properly used, it will help the students to obtain the necessary and right skills that they need in order to survive in the current computerized and highly technical based economy. Technology in education should be initiated as a new discipline in learning because of its effectiveness in promoting learning experience while at the same time it positively affects the lives of not only the students but also the teachers and the entire staff members.
When you hear an individual talking about integrating technology in classroom, it does not only mean that it is a process whereby computer skills together with software programs are being taught in classroom. This means that for effective technology integration to take place, it should be applied across the entire curriculum in a manner that it will facilitate research while at the same time enhance the process of learning. Arizona State University is an example of an institution that is applying technology in classroom today. The reason for the university implementing technology is to support the learning process such as facilitate frequency in feedback and interaction, promote active engagement, connect the students to real-world, and enable them to actively get engaged with the school program and the entire world (Weir 1). Arizona State University is aware that the best way in which technology can be effectively used in the institution is by them being transparent about its usage. This makes it easy for the students and the entire staff to embrace technology while using it to enhance their curricular goals.
It is high time that people believe in technology in education especially its ability to make project learning easy and simple. It is actually considered as a plus for conducting ultra classroom instructions (Edutopia 1). Ar ...

The Harmful Effect of Personal Technology to Students

American Intercontinental University

Abstract
This paper discusses the subject matter that students are being harmed by their overdependence on personal digital technology. It highlights four main points to support this argument and offers one counter argument. It concludes by stating that in as much as technology does harm students, it has contributed to the quality of education.
The Harmful Effect of Personal Technology to Students
Overdependence of personal digital technology by students should be monitored and regulated as they are adversely affected. Comment by Rebecca Coleman: Good thesis, but you need an introduction paragraph to provide background for your essay.
First, statistics report that three in four teens (74%) aged 12-17 own cell phones, tablets and other devices (Pew Research Centre, 2013). This is alarming as one wonders what time dohow they get to theirhave time to study and socialize studies and even socializing. Students’ overdependence on technology adversely affects their social skills, which enhance interaction and communication with others.
The second argument is that students visit social media sites multiple times in a day, and this means that they do not get to their school assignments, and if they do, it is not their best work. This is because their brains are overexcited with what is in the internet, thus limiting their imagination and memory capacity. Richtell (2012) reports that based on research done on effects of technology on students, 90% of teachers stated that technology has been very distractive and has limited the attention spans of students. Comment by Rebecca Coleman: You’ll need to provide evidence that this is the case in the revised version of this paper.
Frequent use of technological devices limits their students’ ability to search for good quality research materials and sources. The internet can mislead them, thus they may end up producing poor quality schoolwork.
Lastly, students are exposed to social dangers such as obesity, suicidal thought processes, and even criminal activities. Technology makes students feel a sense of adventure, and they therefore develop a persona who that can break rules without caring about the consequences. They also risk being brainwashed, thus they may lose their identity leading to dangerous traits, such as being suicidal or having depressive symptoms. Comment by Rebecca Coleman: Through the internet? Comment by Rebecca Coleman: You’ll need to support this with research.
However, technology has made modern life easy and convenient, especially in terms of education. Students can easily access a wide var ...
Present day showing techniques request imaginative and powerful utilization of innovation at most extreme level. Consolidating a virtual group outside classroom instructing has turned out to be inescapable in computerized age training. This exploration was planned to discover how this can be utilized as a part of terms of intuitive instructing and how it can encourage understudies to recuperate the absences of learning in classroom. A web group of a college called Learning Feedback System (LFS) has been utilized here as the strategy to break down five example cases. Impacts of

How Technology Affect College Students
1.0 Introduction
It is a fact that we live in a high technology world with classrooms of high technology. Students now have the chance to enjoy the benefits of using iPads in classrooms, the opportunity to integrate tweets during presentations and the teachers also have the benefit of teaching students through the use of smart TVs. The use of internet facilitates communication internationally or even nationally and helps the students maintain close ties with family and friends most especially those leaving far away. In accordance to different researches, many college students use internet for interpersonal communication which is mostly through emails, instant messaging as well as chat programs (Gemmill & Peterson, 2006). The major benefits that are associated with the use of technology while teaching include increasing the interaction of students, adding diversity of the lessons and enabling the idea of bringing new knowledge and perspectives to the class. But despite the advantages that students may enjoy from the use of high technology, many other negative impacts may result as a result of using the technology inappropriately or over-usage. This essay majorly aims at evaluating the main benefits that students are likely to embrace when they use high technology in classes as well as negative impacts that may affect students learning and concentration in class. The essay also aims at evaluating the literature showing the studies that have earlier been conducted on the impacts of technology to college students. For teachers, students and parents to enjoythe best of the advancement in technology, they must be able to recognize their weaknesses and try and get rid of them ( DeLoatch, 2015).
Just like any other aspect, the advancement in technology has it benefits as well as its consequences. Many of college teens spend a significant portion of their time in screen and most especially computers and smartphones. Not all the time the teens spend on the computers or the smartphones goes to waste since it may also be beneficial to the student’s college experience. The student is able to learn about various technological devices as well as several uses before going to the college and thus the student is more prepared for the class. The best advantage of useof technology is the ability to connect with people both internationally and nationally but many students use internet just to fill all the time they have, neglect normal social interactions or even avoid other life responsibilities (Inoue, 2007). Other negative implications of technology to students may include loneliness, increased stress, disruption in paying attention in class, reduction in the grades attained, st.

Assignment 3: Neuroanatomy Project
Imagine that you are working in a neurology clinic. One of the neurologists tells you that as her practice is expanding, she is having difficulty meeting the education needs of her patients. Part of this problem is explaining the basic neuroanatomical structures to the patients in layperson’s language so that they understand their diagnoses and their underlying neurological impairment. The neurologist asks you to create a written guide for the patients, including both the CNS and PNS. She describes what the basic neuroanatomical structures are, where they are located, how they interact, and what function they serve.
She asks you to name the structures by using the correct technical language but to use layperson’s language as much as possible elsewhere.
Your "Neuroanatomy Guide" should cover the following:
Basic neuroanatomical structures (including the CNS and PNS, as well as the structural packaging that protects the brain from the environment)
Locations of these structures
Functions they serve (what functions damage to this area may affect)
How they interact
Be sure to explain the information in layperson’s language, and use graphics and pictures where helpful. Use APA format when citing material from scholarly sources such as your textbook and online notes. Include a cover page and a reference page listing the resources you used to create your guide.

Assignment 3 Mobile Computing and Social Networking Due Week 7 a.docxdanielfoster65629
Assignment 3: Mobile Computing and Social Networking
Due Week 7 and worth 75 points
Mobile computing has dramatically changed how information is accessed and shared. Wireless networking has been an enabler of mobile computing. One profession that mobile computing has had a big impact on is health care management. Patients are now able to monitor their vital signs such as blood pressure, glucose levels, etc. without having to periodically visit a doctor’s office or hospital. There are devices such as the Withings Blood Pressure Monitor that works with an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad to record, track, and graph a patient’s blood pressure. There are other devices that can measure blood glucose levels, oxygen levels, heart rate, etc. and use an iPhone to send the results to a clinical server. Doctors and caregivers are then able to access the data on the clinical server. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are used as powerful platforms to deliver and receive health care information. Patients and caregivers are increasingly going online to connect and share experiences with others with similar medical issues or concerns Patients are able to take advantage of social networks to do more than just share pictures and tweets. Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:
Compare and contrast monitoring of patient vital signs using mobile computing technology to in-patient visits to the doctor’s office or hospital.
Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using mobile computing technology to monitor patients.
Assess the security concerns with regard to the transmission of personal medical information over wireless networks.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
•
Apply key techniques and concepts in measuring the cost of producing goods and
services.
•
Apply management accounting concepts to identify and process relevant financial
information for decision-making purposes.
•
Use technology and information resources to research issues in financial management.
•
Write clearly and concisely about financial management using proper writing mechanics.
Assignment:
West Island Products (WIP) is a divisionalized furniture manufacturer. The divisions are
autonomous segments with each division responsible for its own sales, cost of operations, and
equipment acquisition. Divisional performance is evaluated annually based on ROI. Each division
serves a different market in the furniture industry. Because the markets and products of the
divisions are so different, there have never been any transfers between divisions.
The Commercial Division of WIP, manufacturers furniture for the restaurant industry. The
Commercial Division plans to introduce a new line of counter chair units featuring a cushioned
seat. Roberta Katz, the Commercial Division manager, has discussed the manufacturing of the
cushioned seats with Nathan Danielson of the Office Division. They both believe a cushioned
seat currently made by the Office Division for use on its deluxe office stool could be modified for
use on the new counter chair. Consequently, Katz asked Danielson for a price for 100-unit lots of
the cushioned seats. The following conversation took place about the price to be charged for the
cushioned seats.
Danielson:
“Roberta, we can make the necessary modifications to the cushioned seat easily.
The raw materials used in the new counter chair seat are slightly different and
should cost about 10 percent more than those used in our deluxe office stool.
However, the labor time should be the same because the seat fabrication
process is the same. I would price the cushioned seat at our regular rate: full cost
plus a 30 percent mark-up. According to my calculations, that would be $2,053
per lot of 100 seats.”
Katz:
“That’s higher than I expected, Nathan. I was thinking that a good price would be
your variable manufacturing cost. After all, your fixed costs will be incurred
regardless of this job. In addition, I have received a quote from one of the
Commercial Division’s regular suppliers to provide us with the counter seats at
$1,900 per lot of 100 seats.”
Danielson:
“Roberta, I am at full capacity. By making the cushioned seats for you, I have to
cut my production of deluxe office stools. The labor time freed by not having to
fabricate the frame and assemble the deluxe stool can be shifted to the
production of the economy stool. I’d like to sell the cushioned seats to you at my
variable cost, but I have excess.

Sandra Tharpe
American Intercontinental University
November 27, 2016

Consolidating a virtual group outside classroom instructing has turned out to be inescapable in computerized age training.

Assignment 3 Neuroanatomy ProjectImagine that you are working in .docxdanielfoster65629

Assess the security concerns with regard to the transmission of personal medical information over wireless networks.

services.
•
Apply management accounting concepts to identify and process relevant financial
information for decision-making purposes.
•
Use technology and information resources to research issues in financial management.
•

Both types of probation involve sanctions imposed by the court, necessitating close supervision of the offender, coupled with the looming threat of a more severe punishment, typically incarceration, if the offender fails to comply with the conditions stipulated in his or her probation.
Given the inherent complexity of working with juveniles, juvenile probation includes components, rules, and processes not found in adult probation. For example, probation officers must take into account factors such as school and parental wishes while determining how a particular case should be handled. These factors are not taken into consideration in adult probation. Also, juvenile probation officers must contend with and account for the inclusion of status offenses, which can be more difficult to track and monitor.
Tasks:
Prepare a 3- to 5-page report on your local juvenile probation department. In your report:
Describe the types of juvenile cases that your local juvenile probation department has taken care of in the past.
Locate and comment on the following:
The department’s mission and vision statement
Whether the juvenile department is located with the adult probation department and community corrections
The number of services aimed toward juveniles
The statistics that demonstrate the department’s effectiveness
State the overall assessment of your local juvenile probation department. Explain based on your research whether you think the department is run well. Does the department meet the needs of local youth? Support your answer with evidence.

Assignment 3 Gender IdentityWe are socialized at every stage in l.docxdanielfoster65629
Assignment 3: Gender Identity
We are socialized at every stage in life to conform to our gender identity. Societal reinforcement of tendencies of gender identity is relentless. For example, in hospitals, little girls are wrapped in pink and little boys in blue. This difference in colors influences how we learn and how we internalize our role in our society.
Girls tend to grow up to play feminine roles and boys tend to grow up to play masculine roles. This differentiation of gender identity has implications in social stratification. The videos given below will provide you with a better understanding of the differentiation of sexual identity from an earlier generation.
Search for and watch an episode of at least one of the following shows. You may find these videos using a variety of search methods including visiting your local library, using Netflix or your local video store, or searching on YouTube. If you have difficulty locating an episode of one of the following shows, contact your instructor for assistance in finding an alternative.
I Love Lucy
All in the Family
The Mickey Mouse Club
The Honeymooners
Leave it to Beaver
Father Knows Best
Gilligan’s Island
The Brady Bunch
I Dream of Jeannie
As you watch the video, ask yourself the following questions:
To what extent have things changed and to what extent have they remained the same in regards to gender roles, expectations, division, and identity from the time this show was originally popular and today?
How conscious and sensitive are the characters regarding gender prejudice, power inequality, and subordination?
Did they take inequality of the sexes for granted?
Based on your readings and understanding that you have gathered after watching the above-noted video, write a short biographical description of your life if you were to wake up tomorrow morning in the time period of the video you watched and find you have a different gender identity. Write a description of how you lived your life a day after your hypothetical change in gender as you answer the following questions
Discuss how you would react on finding out that your sex is opposite. Would you feel a sense of relief, indifference, or elation? Why?
Discuss three ways your attitude towards the opposite sex was enlightened or would change as a result of what you learned from this project. If you would not change your attitude, why?
Write down the ideas and attitudes you have taken for granted a member of your actual gender. Consider how your roles at home and in the office would change if you were a member of the opposite gender.
Relate the ideas of sexism and racism to the videos. How do you think sexism and racism have changed since the 1950s?
Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Immediately after this you must place the title centered on a
separate line. The header of an MLA paper is flush right and
contains your last name and the page number. In addition, MLA
papers are to be double spaced, have a ½ inch indent on the first

guidelines.
Students in the classroom are increasingly on their smartphones
and laptops each day. The communication between teachers and
students is slowly but surely deteriorating. Using technology
such as cell-phonescellphones and computers is becoming the
norm, and is used to access social media at anywhere and
anytime is becoming the norm. From an educational point of
view, the use of technology presents numerous problems to both
teachers and students inside and outside of athe classroom. The
communication between teachers and students is slowly but
surely deteriorating. With theThe introduction of technology
within the classroom environment, there have been has resulted
in negative consequences of technology on education.
ModernizationThe modernization of education has caused three
main problems offor the educational learning process. These
problems of technology are reflected through the negative
impacts of technology inon students’’ education. Students are
receiving less knowledge because of the impacts of technology,
2. they are not learning as much as they could be learning without
technology, and students isare limiting their potential by using
technology for their educational goals because it, which allows
students to study using using less effort on their part.
Comment by pckmobile50: Please note that MLA doesn’t
allow text to be justified (MLA Handbook 4.2) so I aligned it
left. Comment by PCKMobile36: Here you set this up as though
this is the order you are going to discuss the issues in, however
that is not the case throughout the body of the text.
Using technology in education decreases the amount of
knowledge that is gained by students in the classroom. Before
the use of technology such as the Internet, students faced more
challenges in listening to teachers, focusing their attention,
understanding new information, retaining it, and analyzing
information. As students use electronic devices more, they will
have more difficulties with being absorbed in their studies.
Although students try to learn through their smart
phonesmartphones and computers, those electronic devices have
more negative effects on education than advantages.
The process of educational modernization leads to a decrease in
the amount of knowledge provided and gained in the classroom
and has negative consequences. Problems caused by
modernization arise at every step of the educational process.
Sonali Brahmbhatt points out that, “constant stimulation that
comes from the Internet has also taken away the ability of
students to generally focus in the classroom.”” (##). This means
that technology decreases students’’ ability to receive
comprehensive knowledge during the learning process. They
have trouble becoming involved in the educational process and
listening to their teachers, as they are more focused on
technology. During their studies, a student’sstudents’ attention
is paid being given to their phones and computers. Students
direct some part of their efforts to technology, but not to
education. Loop notes that “they are being distracted from the
educational process because they are playing games and
spending time in social network sites, and are not focusing their
3. attention to teachers.”” (##). The amount of time that a student
isstudents are distracted by their smart phonesmartphones and
laptops in a classroom is continuously increasing. Students in
today’’s society are constantly faced with the temptation of
usingto use technology. Comment by pckmobile50: You don’t
need a comma after “that” before a quotation. Comment by
pckmobile50: Because you’re using “their,” you should use
“students,” plural. You can’t use “their” just to avoid saying
“his” or “her.” Comment by PCKMobile36: Please verify the
accuracy of this quotation, that it should not, in fact, be “on”
here. Comment by PCKMobile36: Is this comma part of the
original? If not, please delete.
Not only does technological learning tools results in a student
gaining less knowledge, but it resultsthey result in less
communication and interaction between the student and
teachers. As new technologies are introduced into the classroom
setting, teachers are challenged with using new methods of
education. Some teachers need some time for training in order
to learn how to use these new gadgets and devices. They also
need to spend some time to modify existing educational material
that will be used on smart boards or with by other technological
means. The time spent on training is not resourceful because
this time could be spent on researchingh on new psychological
methods of interaction with students to improve their academic
knowledge. The majority of teachers were educated to use
standard teaching methodologies without the application of
technology. Therefore, the use of technology in a classroom can
lead to a loss of creativity and also decrease the effectiveness
and efficiency of existing teaching methodologies.
Modern technologies cause a lack of interaction and
communication between teachers and students, but an individual
is also faced with the challenge of multi-tasking, resulting in
short attention spans. During their studiescourses, a person
hasstudents often have to research for necessary information
and are can be easily distracted with the task of replying to
Social social Network network Services services (SNS), seeing
4. weather forecasts, and playing video games. Attention becomes
defocused and divided. This leads to difficulties in receiving
and retaining information. According to Sciencedaily.com,
“students could not concentrate on solving complicated
problems or develop sustained and deep thoughts.” This means
that a person cannot focus when technology is present. At the
same time, technologies do not provide the whole range of
abilities to receive new information (Sciencedaily.com). David
Mayer, a professor of psychology, declares that, “doing several
tasks simultaneously may seem like the height of efficiency --
—and it would be, if a person had more than one brain. In the
real world, multitasking actually wastes time and reduces work
quality” (Woolston ##). While students use their computers and
laptops for education, they do study withwhile doing other
things, such as clicking to read the news and or doing online
shopping. It makesThis causes them to waste their time and
decreases the effectiveness of their studies. Doing things
simultaneously, such as watching the news, reading course
materials, and browsing on Facebook, all at the same time,
places too much pressure on the brain. When one
combinesPeople combining all of these activities, they are do
not performed at their highest productivity. When multitasking,
people cannot focus on one particular subject and have
problems with finding concrete solutions to the given tasks.
Multitasking leads to an increase in stress and tiredness,
especially when all performed tasks are extremely important. In
the short-term period, students feel lost. In the long- term, this
sort of multitasking can harm the educational process and the
health of the student. According to a report of the National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, continuous
exposure to stress can lead to problems with sleep, depression,
troubles with the stomach, back pains, heart diseases, and
headaches. Moreover, David Mayer stated that quick shifting
from performing one task to another leads to decreasing
effectiveness and efficiency in doing both of them (Woolston
##). Students are used to handling the smartphone and
5. computer, and when they search for information and then shift
to playing games, s or visiting social media,, or watching
YouTube, it diminishes the efficiency of their learning process.
Comment by PCKMobile36: To defend this topic sentence,
I would suggest discussing the amount of time away from the
classroom more briefly then include other ways to support this,
as this paragraph is a little weak. Some ideas might be: time
lost when technology fails, use of online education where
students and teachers are (at times completely) disconnected,
etc. Comment by pckmobile50: I’m not sure what you mean
here. Is it that the time is not “a good use of resources”?
Comment by PCKMobile36: I would suggest giving more
context for this study. For example, say something like, "In a
study of 500 5th graders asked to complete math problems,
Sciencedaily.com found that ‘students could not concentrate...’"
The reader needs more details about this study to make it
relevant. Comment by pckmobile50: If you have a page for
this, then it should be “thoughts” (##). Comment by
PCKMobile36: You say this later on in the paragraph when you
shift focus, and I would suggest cutting this statement here and
putting it below, retaining the in-text citation. Comment by
pckmobile50: You didn’t need “all at the same time” because
you already said “simultaneously.” Comment by PCKMobile36:
This seems like a bit of a stretch and perhaps a bit of a
hyperbolic connection. I would suggest cutting it, as it does not
directly connect with your thesis statement. Comment by
pckmobile50: You should have a citation for this.
In addition, technologies do not provide the whole range of
abilities of receiving new information. Klaus claims that the
“process of education represents a combination of hearing,
vision, physical, and mental interaction.”” (##). By this, Klaus
means suggests that technology candoes not provide all this; it
just shows the necessary information. Therefore, the processes
of understanding new information and mastering knowledge and
skills become more difficult. Technologies do not provide any
sensory and motor development, because students’’ activities
6. are limited (Rowan ##). They become less coordinated, less
regulated, and less focused on one particular subject.
The lack of focus complicates students’’ participation in anthe
educational process. The combination of the above-mentioned
factors decreases personal sustainability. The majority of
teachers agree that students consider computers, phones, and
tablets as means of entertainment and use them mostly for
playing games (Klaus ##). According to
Themilfordmessenger.com, even students have noticed and
agree that “phones are a distraction in school nowadays, kids
don’’t even listen, and they are just on their phones all day,
every day.” This statement shows that a lot of students do not
consider technology as a means of obtaining new valuable
information and improving their current knowledge, but rather,
as a distraction. As it was mentioned above, the Internet, e-
mails, and text messages produce a constant stimulation of
thinking. This leads to a short attention span, and creates an
impulsive behavior, and problems with time management
because people’’s attention is transferred from one subject to
another numerous times during a day. Students pay less
attention to the particular education process because of the fact
that their attention is drawn to social media, YouTube, texting,
games, and other distractions on their phones, tablets, and
laptops. Comment by PCKMobile36: This paragraph gets
slightly redundant with the points made above. In addition, the
information is more related to the above paragraph that begins
at the top of page 3 than the paragraph(s) that directly preceed
it. I would highly suggest you combine this paragraph with that
above, cutting redundancies and repetitions. Comment by
pckmobile50: If there’s a page cite, this should be “day” (##).
Using technology results in a student receiving less knowledge,
and it also decreases the whole quality of the learning process.
Students do not receive enough information and have problems
with analysis and evaluation of the obtained information
because they are distracted. Sometimes the received information
is false, and their education level does not reflect their real
7. skills and knowledge. The use of technology during studies does
significant harm to the quality of a students’ education. As a
result, N numerous students do not express their own visions;
rather, they just take these ‘their’ ideas from the Internet.
Balrahmbhatt supports this idea by stateing that “there are also
increased incidences of plagiarism for assignments and an
overall lack of respect for correct language usage within
essays.”” (##). Because sStudents tend to just type their essays
on the computer, they often. It causes them to become confused
with about the correct language usage. Some students do not
even know the spellings of different words, the usage of proper
grammar, and or the utilization of critical thinking.
Comment by PCKMobile36: What do you mean by this?
The information from where, exactly? In the classroom?? I think
you mean to suggest through technology, but this isn’t 100%
clear to the reader. Comment by PCKMobile36: Again here,
I’m not sure what you are trying to suggest. Did you mean to
say that students education level no longer suggests what
students should be able to do by that point in their academic
careers? Or possibly that their lack of education does not allow
them to differentiate true facts from false ones, or to analyze
information critically? Comment by pckmobile50: You spell
this name several different ways; please check and make them
consistent.
Technological learning tools have negative impacts because it
resultsthey result in students becoming incapable of working by
themselves. Technologies provide real -time information and
require students to act immediately. Therefore, theystudents do
not have enough time for proper evaluation of the obtained
information nor to develop their own ideas. For an in-depth
understanding of the studysubject being studied, students have
to thoroughly read what was written thoroughly. However,
through technological methods, students do not tend to think
about knowledge deeply. As technology has progressed over the
years, it has made students become lazier than they were in the
past. Students these days do not have to read or analyze the
8. books given for them to read because the Internet just gives
them the information in just one click. These are just some of
the examples of the negative impacts of technology on students
today. Comment by PCKMobile36: This flows better to the
next paragraph without the sentence you had after this.
Not only do technological learning tools take away from
student’s’ ability of working by themselves, but itthey also
causes the thinking ability of students to become narrower.
Students just look up answers to questions from the Internet and
copy them. They repeat the information without analyzing it for
themselves, which results in less knowledge gained by the
students. Students do not have an opportunity to develop their
own critical thinking abilities in order to create new ideas.
According to the research of Patricia Greenfield, a doctor of
psychological sciences who workeds in Los Angeles, she asserts
“the process of using a technology by children improves their
visual skills, at the same time, worsening their ability to
analyze information and critically evaluate it,”; “Speech and
vocabulary became poorer, narrower, and less comprehensive”
(Weebly.com). A modern technology used in the educational
process not only reduces the quality of learning, it also has a lot
of unproven and false information. The Internet is filled with
too mucha hodgepodge of unprovend theories. Yet Sstudents
could obtain high marks without the presence of actual
knowledge. Students are not studying to their potential and are
taking shortcuts by copying information from the Internet.
Students are submitting papers that they would not be qualified
to write with their current education level, but by copying
information from their Internet, they do it anyway in order to
obtain high marks (Weebly.com). It should be mentioned that
while they can obtain good marks during this time, they
wouldare not developing proper communication skills,
management skills, and or creative thinking abilities. In the
future, Sstudents will be unable to obtain professional
knowledge because they did not actually learn the basic
information. Their current weakness in education will lead to
9. future consequences. Another big threat to students is that the
Internet has a lot of false information available for anyone to
read, and many students may take this information as the truth.
Loops’ article gives a great example of this by saying,
Comment by PCKMobile36: Within this paragraph, you go
back and forth several times between the two ideas--1) that
students aren't developing higher-level skills because they can
copy from the Inernet and 2) that they might even be learning
incorrect information without realizing it. Please revise this
paragraph so that the information for each subtopic is grouped
together. My suggestion would be to begin with #1 and then
transition to #2. Regardless, the two need to be grouped
together.
a“as an adult, you may know that Mr. Bob’'s bio facts are far
from true, but that doesn’'t mean that your child has the same
understanding. She may take everything that she reads online as
fact, leading to misinformation or even a slightly skewed way of
thinking.”. (##) Comment by PCKMobile36: Quotes over 40
words need to be in block formation, with the end punctuation
coming before the parentheses and citation.
The Internet provides access to different ideas and opinions
from many different people. However, these ideas and opinions
are not always true and may have incorrect information.
Misinformation leads to wrongan incorrect understanding of
facts and events, incorrect evaluation, and invaluable outcomes,
which is why students should not rely so much on the Internet.
Comment by pckmobile50: I don’t think this is the word
you mean (“invaluable” means very valuable, not “not
valuable.”) Would “poor” work instead?
HoweverAs a result, the main negative impact of using
technologies educationally is that students do not feel the need
to receive new knowledge because they can find information on
the Internet. Students are able to get the information they need
easily and quickly. There are so many resources on websites
that students can get it for free. Moreover, many students only
take online classes, so they do not need to go to school.
10. LessFewer and lessfewer students are feeling the need to make
an effort to study. Comment by PCKMobile36: I would say
this more like, "As a result, the truly horrible consequence is
that students no longer value their education at all" or
something similar.
Students feel that they can receive high grades without putting
in much effort because of the Internet. This is not an effective
way to study, because it does not hone their critical thinking
neither skills nor their ability to analyze important information.
Today, reading is usually performed in order to obtain specific
and necessary information, but it is usually not used to widen
theirstudents’ views and opinions in different subjects and
fields. Students in the past had usually read for pleasure.
According to Brahmbhatt, “Reading books and articles for
pleasure, which has significantly decreased among youths and
adults in recent years, increases and enhances thinking activities
and engages the imaginational processes unlike visual media
such as films, videos, games, and television.” They” (##).
Students today do not feel a need to have a unique reading
experience, or extend their vocabulary and ideas. Students are
using technologies such as the Internet to search for any news,
description, analyses, or entertainment (games, videos,
music.),), but not for obtaining new knowledge that will
increase their vocabulary, ideas, and or understandings. As the
smart digital era developeds, students are losing the interest
ofin reading articles and books for academic purposes.
Comment by PCKMobile36: Here I would suggest
something like, "In addition to losing their desire to study
formally, students are missing opportunities for growth outside
of the classroom" or something similiar. This is a better
transition between the ideas and also avoids some of the
redundancy of these two sentences.
Using technology in the classroom does not provide students
with an in-depth study, but it results in students not focusing on
important details which that could hone their critical thinking
abilities. Students may know where to find good information,
11. but they do not know how to generate information from their
own ideas. Technology gives people the idea that everything
couldcan be found somewhere without any significant effort.
Therefore, students lose their innovative ability to create
something new. Students should be able to generate their
personal points of view, write unique essays or research papers,
and develop new theories and approaches. Technological
development increases intellectual laziness because of the
continuous use of technologies (Internet, computers, tablets,
and phones) and increasing of video-based information
resources and guidelines as opposed to textual resources
(Brahmbhatt). Availability ##). Specifically, the availability of
technology does not actually provide better results in math and
language arts. According to the official research, “the Apple
Classroom of Tomorrow (ACOT)” performed by Baker,
Gearhart, and Herman in 1994,
“on standardized tests including vocabulary, reading,
comprehension, mathematics concepts and work-study, ACOT
students performed no better than comparison groups or
nationally reported norms who did not have access to computers
or to the teaching and learning reforms implemented in ACOT
schools.” (Schacter ##) Comment by pckmobile50: Please
check the source and see if this should be “reading
comprehension” with no comma after “reading.”
. Free access to the Internet and its sources increases the ability
to use technology for entertainment, but not for studies. Cingel
and Sundar note that,“:
increased use of cell phones to text messages with grammatical
shortcuts has resulted in high written grammatical errors among
teenagers. It mentions that the technology is more popular
among adolescents ages 13–-17 in the U.S. which is hampering
the understanding of English grammar during the developmental
period. The use of text messaging among users has resulted in
the weakening of their respective language.”. (##)
Students chat online a lot, and due to the excessive usage of
online chatting; their writing skills have declined quite
12. tremendously. Digital communication makes them forget about
improving their writing skills. They just use slang and incorrect
vocabulary that results in thenm not knowing how to use
grammar properly and or organize their writing. Students barely
use a high level of vocabulary today. The researchResearch
performed by the Chicago University of Chicago in one of thea
California schools showed that the greater Internet access of for
students to the Internet doesdid not provide any positive
outcomes regarding their education. According to Kenny, “there
was no any impact of technologies on language and math
scores.”” (##). This happened because technology itself does
not grant better results in studying. If students utilized their
gadgets for mostly entertainment purposes, it wouldit’s not be
helpful for their education. Comment by PCKMobile36: This
should go up above when you first mention this. Comment by
PCKMobile36: I believe this should be "not" here; please check
the original and verify that accuracy of your quotation.
While usingUsing technology in the educational process makes
a student not concentrate on studying, and it also eliminates real
interaction between students and teachers and as well as
between peers. Communication and interaction are both
performed via the Internet, messages, and social media.
Teachers became unable to understand whether the students
really catch the information or have any troubles of
understanding some topics. In actuality, Iit is easier for students
to learn from the teachers than to read information online. This
is because the teacher can explain the subject that students
cannot understand, and there may be information that is not
available on the Internet. But teachers have become unable to
understand whether the students really grasp the information or
have any troubles in understanding some topics. Students also
do not have much experience in developing communication
skills because they do not use them. They do not know how to
interact with others or how to enter into discussions, expressing
their ideas and opinions in an understandable manner. Students
are less involved in oral discussions and debates, so they do not
13. have a way of defending their opinions and ideas. They just
learn how to search for necessary information and how to write
short messages. Technology impacts students by having them
pay less attention to the actual learning process, and it also has
had negative impacts on the physical and mental health of
students. ImprovementAn improvement of in education is
accomplished by teachers who limit the students’ access to
entertainment and social media to students during within the
classroom setting. This is supported by official studies. TheAn
experiment performed by North Carolina Urban Institute
researchers showed that the performance and learning is higher
in the schools with limited access to entertainment like Youtube
is higher YouTube (Kenny ##). Without students’’ desire to
obtain information and master their knowledge and skills,
technology is just a means of entertainment whichthat provides
access to games, videos, and music. Valuable knowledge can be
attained through critical thinking, but technology takes away the
opportunity to think critically and creatively. In addition, many
students take online classes today, but itwhich raises a problem.
Teachers cannot watch students to see if whether they are
cheating or not. Waters emphasizes that“: Comment by
PCKMobile36: This is all redundant and related to the above
section on developing critical skills. It does not belong here.
Please either cut and integrate into the above, related paragraph,
or delete entirely (this would be my suggestion because it's
already been stated in more or less the same way).
what we'’re calling high-tech cheating has been characterized
variously as a trend, an epidemic, and a plague. But it might be
something even worse: a paradigm shift. More students than
ever are using information technology in ways that break the
rules of academic integrity, and a shocking number of them
don'’t seem to think they'’re doing anything wrong—--well, not
that wrong.”A method to technological cheating is. (##)
Methods to cheat with technology are getting increasingly
diversified every day. Some students in today’’s society do not
even realize that it is a bad behavior. Moreover, teachers do not
14. use direct eye contact with students, so they have no idea if
students are doing well in their studies or not. Through the
process of standard education, students can also learn to have
good character. Teachers teach morals and values to students,
and as well as what is important in society.
As students start to have shorter attention spans, they are
suffering from a lack of concentration and lack of patience. This
is also attributed to the fact that students indulge themselves
within the Internet, games and texting. Moreover, students have
a lack of physical interactivity activity because they are not
physically active moving when using technology. They are just
sitting at the computer or useing one finger foron a using smart
phonesmartphone. For an effective education, students have to
maintain a balance between studying and physical activities.
Although technology has been used as a distraction by
students in the classroom, there are some positive influences as
well. According to Schacter, “students receive more information
and knowledge in the shortest period when teachers give them
computer-based instructions.”” (##). Video games increase
people’’s ability to perform different tasks simultaneously;. t
This ability can be very useful in some professions. For
example, pilots, car drivers, and military people have to
perform monitoring of numerous instruments at the same time.
In addition, Combinationa combination of games and the
educational process makes education easier and more attractive.
Researcher in India approved that a combination of
mathematical questions with an arcade game has had a
considerablye positive impact on the children’s scores of
children (Kenny ##). They are willing to play games and receive
knowledge. Also Although there are considerable negative
effects on studying, technologies also help students and teachers
in educational process. Tthrough the use of technology, students
and teachers now have an opportunity to write on the touch
screens with the help of interactive withdrawals. This makes the
educational process faster and more understandable. Studying
became becomes engaging and interactive. Less time is
15. necessary for obtaining feedbacks, giving scores for students’’
works, and performing educational tasks. New and
understandable material is less frustrating for students, as they
can find various up-to-date sources. Easy access to the Internet
via phones, tablets, and computers makes obtaining information
much faster. Students have an ability to receive more
comprehensive knowledge concerning numerous topics: politics,
music, sports, and physics. At the same time, technology
provides constant updating of events that are happening all over
in the world. Technology provides a wider range of information
in less time. Comment by PCKMobile36: This seems to be
thrown in here from out of nowhere. Also, the idea could be
much more developed, as there is a lot of research on this
problem. It would be great if you could integrate a source into
this to support your point. Comment by PCKMobile36:
Source needed for this information, as it is not considered
"common knowledge." Comment by pckmobile50: This
should be either “Researchers” or “A researcher.” Comment by
PCKMobile36: Scores on what, exactly? Comment by
pckmobile50: I’m not sure what you mean here.
Also, technological tools provide enhancement of learning
strategies and methodologies. Previously, teachers wrote on
chalkboards and white boards, but now they use smart boards.
According that are, according to Milfordmessenger.com,
“extremely advanced and offer many different ways to teach and
to share information with students.” These technological
solutions help improve the educational process and make it
easier and more productive. Teachers have an opportunity to
pull any web sitewebsite, Microsoft Power PointPowerPoint
Presentation, Smart Response, Smart Netbook Math Tools,
Smart Document Camera, and or other programs on the board
and show it to all the students. Different images and notes can
be combined into one unit of a virtual netbook and provide
comprehensive and easily understandable information. Easy
access to the Internet via phones, tablets, and computers makes
obtaining information much faster. Students have an ability to
16. receive more comprehensive knowledge concerning numerous
topics: politics, music, sports and physics. At the same time,
technology provides constant updating of events that happen in
any place of the world. Technology provides a wider range of
information in less time. Technology has also helped with
having better productivity during classroom lectures.
Technology helps teachers increase the effectiveness and
efficiency of the organization and presentation of lessons,
which makes understanding new material quicker, easier, more
meaningful, and engaging as it is supported by multimedia
presentations. Technology provides different opportunities for
students, since as they can use different and more suitable types
of educational styles. Technological tools are used for the
promotion of creativity, productivity, and enhancing
enhancement of the learning process. Work with social networks
develops communicational and interaction skills. The majority
of people have a positive attitude toward technology and
modernization. They receive better access to world knowledge
and at the same time feel more modern and innovative. Schacter
insists that, “students like their classes and develop more
positive attitudes when their classes include computer-based
instructions.”” (##). Computer-based instructions makegive
students have information easily and quickly. They get a broad
range of knowledge through the Internet, whichAll of these are
some of the positive aspects of technology in education.
Comment by PCKMobile36: I would suggest deleting this
sentence because 1) it contradicts the points you tried to make
above about social media leading to isolation and
communication problems and 2) it does not fit in the context of
this paragraph.
Technology has ahad considerable impacts on the quality of
education a student receives, most of which are negative.
Different scientists and experiments have supported these ideas.
Implementation of technology into the educational process
creates barriers in obtaining new information by decreasing the
listening and attention skills of students. The use of
17. technologies during the educational process also decreases the
amount of obtained information. Students faced more challenges
in listening to teachers, concentrating their attention, receiving
new information, remembering it, and analyzing various facts
and events. They lose their ability to interact with peers and
teachers, and to develop and express their ideas and opinions.
The process of educational modernization leadshas led to thea
decrease in the amount of provided and received knowledge.
With the introduction of technology to education, students are
faced with the challenge of finding correct information. The
Internet has a lot of information, both good and bad, so they
students receive incorrect information often. Students can easily
search for information, but they have a challenge in expressing
their ideas and generating new ones. Their education level does
not reflect their real skills and knowledge. Students become
unable to analyze and evaluate information. The main negative
impact of technology on the educational process is that students
do not feel the necessity inof obtaining new knowledge, because
they can find everything on the Internet. Rather, Tthey can find
everything wthat they need and want in the shortest time
without considerable effort.
Editor I
This is a good paper, with a nice mix of outside sources and
your own thoughts. You did have a consistent grammatical error
with the word “their” when you talk about a student, singular,
but then use “their” to describe the student. I assume that this is
because you want to avoid “his or her” or “his” or “her,” which
can be awkward. But it’s incorrect to use “their” when you’re
talking about a single person. The easy way to fix this is to
change the noun to the plural, and then “their” is appropriate.
Your in-text citations don’t include page numbers, which is
MLA style (Author ##), like (Smith 123). If some of your
sources are electronic, they might not have pages, but you need
page numbers for the ones that do. In the sentences where you
mention the author, you don’t need to repeat the author’s name
18. in the parenthetical citation at the end.
The paper also loses its focus now and then. For instance, in the
first full paragraph on page 5 you say “Sometimes the received
information is false, and their education level does not reflect
their real skills and knowledge.” Then you talk about other
things, and you don’t return to this point until the bottom of
page 6. I would return to your outline, if you have one, or create
a quick outline with the points that you wanted to make and
then see if they’re made in that order in your paper. You have a
lot of information here; it just needs to be a little better
organized.
Good luck with the paper!
Editor 2’s Comments:
Overall, the structure of your sentences was fairly well done
and, from a grammatical standpoint, the issues were minor (see
Editor 1’s comments above; I would also add that there was
confusion between when to use “and” as opposed to “or” in a
list—if you are suggesting something isn’t done, use “or” rather
than “and.”).
However, I have left several comments above regarding the
structure of the overall essay, which still needs work. To begin,
I would suggest that you rewrite your introductory paragraph to
follow the actual flow of the article or rearrange the paragraphs
(which will also require you to rework your transitions) so that
the two align. Also, within paragraphs, it is important that you
stick to one topic; if you move on to another point, you should
begin a new paragraph or, if it is just a shift to a different
subpoint, you want to be sure that you don’t go back and forth
between the two ideas; say one, then say the other.
As Editor 1 said, you have a lot of information. In fact, at
times, I felt there was too much information. You do do a good
job of integrating sources, but I would suggest limiting your
comments on them/integration of them. In addition, I would
suggest that you revisit the essay to note where you repeat
yourself and cut out any redundancies. If length requirements
are an issue, I would suggest looking at more supporting studies
19. to fill out the paper with other ideas (I highlighted the topic of
physical activity, which could easily lend itself to length).
However, if length is not a concern, cutting the essay would get
your points across more succinctly and, thus, effectively.
Thank you for the opportunity to edit your paper, and best of
luck on this assignment!
The Impacts of Technology on Students’ Education
Students in the classroom are increasingly on their smartphones
and laptops each day. Using technology such as cellphones and
computers to access social media anywhere and anytime is
becoming the norm. From an educational point of view, the use
of technology presents numerous problems to both teachers and
students inside and outside the classroom. The communication
between teachers and students is slowly but surely deteriorating.
The introduction of technology within the classroom
environment has resulted in negative consequences on
education. The modernization of education has caused three
main problems for the educational learning process. These
problems of technology are reflected through the negative
impacts of technology on students’ education. Students are
receiving less knowledge because of the impacts of technology,
they are not learning as much as they could be learning without
technology, and students are limiting their potential by using
technology for their educational goals, which allows students to
study using less effort.
Although students try to learn through their smartphones and
computers, those electronic devices have more negative effects
20. on education than advantages.
The process of educational modernization leads to a decrease in
the amount of knowledge provided and gained in the classroom
and has negative consequences. Problems caused by
modernization arise at every step of the educational process.
Sonali Brahmbhatt points out that “constant stimulation that
comes from the Internet has also taken away the ability of
students to generally focus in the classroom.” This means that
technology decreases students’ ability to receive comprehensive
knowledge during the learning process. They have trouble
becoming involved in the educational process and listening to
their teachers as they are more focused on technology. During
their studies, students’ attention is being given to their phones
and computers. Students direct some part of their efforts to
technology, but not to education. Loop notes that “they are
being distracted from the educational process because they are
playing games and spending time on social network sites and
are not focusing their attention to teachers.” The amount of time
that students are distracted by their smartphones and laptops in
a classroom is continuously increasing. Students in today’s
society are constantly faced with the temptation to use
technology.
Not only do technological learning tools result in a student
gaining less knowledge, but also they result in less
communication and interaction between the student and
teachers. As new technologies are introduced into the classroom
setting, teachers are challenged with using new methods of
education. Some teachers need some time for training in order
to learn how to use these new gadgets and devices. They also
need to spend some time to modify existing educational material
that will be used on smartboards or with other technological
means. The time spent on training is not a good use of resources
because this time could be spent on researching new
psychological methods of interaction with students to improve
their academic knowledge. The majority of teachers were
educated to use standard teaching methodologies without the
21. application of technology. Therefore, the use of technology in a
classroom can lead to decrease the effectiveness and efficiency
of existing teaching methodologies. Therefore, the use of
technology in a classroom can lead to a loss of creativity and
also decrease the effectiveness and efficiency of existing
teaching methodologies.
Modern technologies cause a lack of interaction and
communication between teachers and students, but an individual
is also faced with the challenge of multi-tasking, resulting in
short attention spans. During their courses, students often have
to research necessary information and can be easily distracted
with the task of replying to social network services (SNS),
seeing weather forecasts and playing video games. Attention
becomes defocused and divided. This leads to difficulties in
receiving and retaining information. In a study of 500 5th
graders asked to complete math problems, Sciencedaily.com
found that “students could not concentrate on solving
complicated problems or develop sustained and deep thoughts.”
This means that a person cannot focus when technology is
present. David Mayer, a professor of psychology, declares that
“doing several tasks simultaneously may seem like the height of
efficiency and it would be, if a person had more than one brain.
In the real world, multitasking actually wastes time and reduces
work quality” (Woolston). While students use their computers
and laptops for education, they study while doing other things,
such as clicking to read the news or doing online shopping. This
causes them to waste their time and decreases the effectiveness
of their studies. Doing things simultaneously, such as watching
the news, reading course materials, and browsing on Facebook,
places too much pressure on the brain. People combining all of
these activities do not perform at their highest productivity.
When multitasking, people cannot focus on one particular
subject and have problems with finding concrete solutions to the
given tasks. Multitasking leads to an increase in stress and
tiredness, especially when all performed tasks are extremely
22. important. In the short-term period, students feel lost. In the
long term, this sort of multitasking can harm the educational
process and the health of the student. Moreover, David Mayer
stated that quick shifting from performing one task to another
leads to decreasing effectiveness and efficiency in doing both of
them (Woolston).
In addition, technologies do not provide the whole range of
abilities of receiving new information. Klaus claims that the
“process of education represents a combination of hearing,
vision, physical and mental interaction.” By this, Klaus suggests
that technology cannot provide all this; it just shows the
necessary information. Therefore, the processes of
understanding new information and mastering knowledge and
skills become more difficult. Technologies do not provide any
sensory and motor development because students’ activities are
limited (Rowan). They become less coordinated, less regulated,
and less focused on one particular subject.
Using technology results in a student receiving less knowledge,
and it also decreases the whole quality of the learning process.
Students do not receive enough information and have problems
with analysis and evaluation of the obtained information
because they are distracted. As a result, numerous students do
not express their own visions; rather they just take ‘their’ ideas
from the Internet. Brahmbhatt supports this idea by state that
“there are also increased incidences of plagiarism for
assignments and an overall lack of respect for correct language
usage within essays.” Because students tend to just type their
essays on the computer, they often become confused about the
correct language usage. Some students do not even know the
spellings of different words, the usage of proper grammar, or
the utilization of critical thinking.
Technological learning tools have negative impacts because
they result in students becoming incapable of working by
themselves. Technologies provide real-time information and
require students to act immediately. Therefore, students do not
have enough time for proper evaluation of the obtained
23. information or to develop their own ideas. For an in-depth
understanding of the subject being studied, students have to
thoroughly read what was written. However, through
technological methods, students do not tend to think about
knowledge deeply. As technology has progressed over the years,
it has made students become lazier than they were in the past.
Students these days do not have to read or analyze the books
given for them to read because the Internet gives them the
information in just one click. Students just look up answers to
questions from the Internet and copy them. They repeat the
information without analyzing it for themselves, which results
in less knowledge gained by the students. Students do not have
an opportunity to develop their own critical thinking abilities in
order to create new ideas. According to the research of Patricia
Greenfield, a doctor of psychological sciences who works in
Los Angeles, “the process of using a technology by children
improves their visual skills, at the same time, worsening their
ability to analyze information and critically evaluate it.”
A modern technology used in the educational process not only
reduces the quality of learning, it also has a lot of unproven and
false information which are available for anyone to read, and
many students may take this information as the truth. Loops’
article gives a great example of this by saying,
as an adult, you may know that Mr. Bob's bio facts are far from
true, but that doesn't mean that your child has the same
understanding. She may take everything that she reads online as
fact, leading to misinformation or even a slightly skewed way of
thinking.
The Internet provides access to different ideas and opinions
from many different people. However, these ideas and opinions
are not always true and may have incorrect information.
Misinformation leads to an incorrect understanding of facts and
events, incorrect evaluation, and poor outcomes, which is why
students should not rely so much on the Internet.
As a result, the truly horrible consequence is that students
no longer value their education at all. Students are able to get
24. the information they need easily and quickly. There are so many
resources on websites that students can get for free. Moreover,
many students only take online classes, so they do not need to
go to school. Fewer and fewer students are feeling the need to
make an effort to study.
In addition to losing their desire to study formally, students are
missing opportunities for growth outside of the classroom.
Today, reading is usually performed in order to obtain specific
and necessary information, but it is usually not used to widen
students’ views and opinions in different subjects and fields.
Students in the past usually read for pleasure. According to
Brahmbhatt, “Reading books and articles for pleasure, which
has significantly decreased among youths and adults in recent
years, increases and enhances thinking activities and engages
the imaginational processes unlike visual media such as films,
videos, games, and television.” Students today do not feel a
need to have a unique reading experience or extend their
vocabulary and ideas. Students are using technologies such as
the Internet to search for any news, description, analyses, or
entertainment (games, videos, music), but not for obtaining new
knowledge that will increase their vocabulary, ideas, or
understanding. As the smart digital era develops, students are
losing interest in reading articles and books for academic
purposes.
Using technology in the classroom does not provide students
with an in-depth study, but it results in students not focusing on
important details that could hone their critical thinking abilities.
Students may know where to find good information, but they do
not know how to generate information from their own ideas.
Technology gives people the idea that everything can be found
somewhere without any significant effort. Therefore, students
lose their innovative ability to create something new. Students
should be able to generate their personal points of view, write
unique essays or research papers, and develop new theories and
approaches. Technological development increases intellectual
laziness because of the continuous use of technologies (Internet,
25. computers, tablets, and phones) and of video-based information
resources and guidelines as opposed to textual resources
(Brahmbhatt). Specifically, the availability of technology does
not actually provide better results in math and language arts.
According to official research, “the Apple Classroom of
Tomorrow (ACOT)” performed by Baker, Gearhart, and Herman
in 1994,
on standardized tests including vocabulary, reading,
comprehension, mathematics concepts and work-study, ACOT
students performed no better than comparison groups or
nationally reported norms who did not have access to computers
or to the teaching and learning reforms implemented in ACOT
schools, (Schacter).
Free access to the Internet and its sources increases the ability
to use technology for entertainment, but not for studies. Cingel
and Sundar note that
increased use of cell phones to text messages with grammatical
shortcuts has resulted in high written grammatical errors among
teenagers. It mentions that the technology is more popular
among adolescents ages 13-17 in the U.S. which is hampering
the understanding of English grammar during the developmental
period. The use of text messaging among users has resulted in
the weakening of their respective language.
Students chat online a lot, and due to the excessive usage of
online chatting their writing skills have declined quite
tremendously. Digital communication makes them forget about
improving their writing skills. They use slang and incorrect
vocabulary that results in them not knowing how to use
grammar properly or organize their writing. Students barely use
a high level of vocabulary today. Therefore, Internet access for
students did not provide any positive outcomes regarding their
education.
Using technology in the educational process makes a student not
concentrate on studying, and it also eliminates real interaction
between students and teachers as well as between peers.
Communication and interaction are both performed via the
26. Internet, messages, and social media. In actuality, it is easier
for students to learn from the teachers than to read information
online. This is because the teacher can explain the subject that
students cannot understand, and there may be information that
is not available on the Internet. However, teachers have become
unable to understand whether the students really grasp the
information or have any troubles in understanding some topics.
Students also do not have much experience in developing
communication skills because they do not use them. They do not
know how to interact with others or how to enter into
discussions, expressing their ideas and opinions in an
understandable manner. Students are less involved in oral
discussions and debates, so they do not have a way of defending
their opinions and ideas. They just learn how to search for
necessary information and how to write short messages. An
improvement in education is accomplished by teachers who
limit students’ the access to entertainment and social media
within classroom setting. This is supported by official studies.
An experiment performed by North Carolina Urban Institute
researchers showed that performance and learning is higher in
the schools with limited access to entertainment like Youtube
(Kenny). In addition, many students take online classes today,
which raise a problem. Teachers cannot watch students to see if
they are cheating. Waters emphasizes that:
what we're calling high-tech cheating has been characterized
variously as a trend, an epidemic, and a plague. But it might be
something even worse: a paradigm shift. More students than
ever are using information technology in ways that break the
rules of academic integrity, and a shocking number of them
don't seem to think they're doing anything wrong-well, not that
wrong.
Methods to cheat with technology are getting increasingly
diversified every day. Some students in today’s society do not
even realize that it is a bad behavior. Moreover, teachers do not
use direct eye contact with students, so they have no idea if
students are doing well in their studies or not. Through the
27. process of standard education, students can also learn to have
good character. Teachers teach morals and values to students, as
well as what is important in society.
Although technology has been used as a distraction by
students in the classroom, there are some positive influences as
well. According to Schacter, “students receive more information
and knowledge in the shortest period when teachers give them
computer-based instructions.” Video games increase people’s
ability to perform different tasks simultaneously; this ability
can be very useful in some professions. For example, pilots, car
drivers, and military people have to perform monitoring of
numerous instruments at the same time. In addition, a
combination of games and the educational process makes
education easier and more attractive. A researcher in India
proved that a combination of mathematical questions with an
arcade game had a considerably positive impact on children’s
scores (Kenny). They are willing to play games and receive
knowledge. Also through the use of technology, students and
teachers now have an opportunity to write on touch screens; and
this makes the educational process faster and more
understandable. Studying becomes engaging and interactive.
Less time is necessary for obtaining feedback, giving scores for
students’ work, and performing educational tasks. New and
understandable material is less frustrating for students, as they
can find various up-to-date sources. Easy access to the Internet
via phones, tablets, and computers makes obtaining information
much faster. Students have an ability to receive more
comprehensive knowledge concerning numerous topics: politics,
music, sports and physics. At the same time, technology
provides constant updating of events that are happening all over
in the world. Technology provides a wider range of information
in less time.
Also, technological tools provide enhancement of learning
strategies and methodologies. Previously, teachers wrote on
chalkboards and white boards, but now they use smart boards
that are, according to Milfordmessenger.com, “extremely
28. advanced and offer many different ways to teach and to share
information with students.” These technological solutions help
improve the educational process and make it easier and more
productive. Teachers have an opportunity to pull any website,
Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation, Smart Response, Smart
Netbook Math Tools, Smart Document Camera, or programs on
the board and show it to the students. Different images and
notes can be combined into one unit of a virtual netbook and
provide comprehensive and easily understandable information.
Technology has also helped with having better productivity
during classroom lectures. Technology helps teachers increase
the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization and
presentation of lessons, which makes understanding new
material quicker, easier, more meaningful, and engaging as it is
supported by multimedia presentations. Technology provides
different opportunities for students, as they can use different
and more suitable types of educational styles. Technological
tools are used for the promotion of creativity, productivity, and
enhancement of the learning process. The majority of people
have a positive attitude toward technology and modernization.
They receive better access to world knowledge and at the same
time feel more modern and innovative. Schacter insists that
“students like their classes and develop more positive attitudes
when their classes include computer-based instructions.”
Computer-based instructions give students information easily
and quickly. All of these are some of the positive aspects of
technology in education.
Technology has had considerable impacts on the quality of
education a student receives, most of which are negative.
Different scientists and experiments have supported these ideas.
Implementation of technology into the educational process
creates barriers in obtaining new information by decreasing the
listening and attention skills of students. The use of
technologies during the educational process also decreases the
amount of obtained information. Students face more challenges
in listening to teachers, concentrating their attention, receiving
29. new information, remembering it, and analyzing various facts
and events. They lose their ability to interact with peers and
teachers and to develop and express their ideas and opinions.
The process of educational modernization has led to a decrease
in the amount of provided and received knowledge. With the
introduction of technology to education, students are faced with
the challenge of finding correct information. The Internet has a
lot of information, both good and bad, so student receive
incorrect information often. Students can easily search for
information, but they have a challenge in expressing their ideas
and generating new ones. Their education level does not reflect
their real skills and knowledge. Students become unable to
analyze and evaluate information. The main negative impact of
technology on the educational process is that students do not
feel the necessity of obtaining new knowledge, because they can
find everything on the Internet. Rather, they can find everything
that they need and want in the shortest time without
considerable effort.
