Conflict and change: Conflict in a society (such as a war or even an election) can create significant change in a society.
Demographic change: Changes in the make-up of a population can also affect society. As the makeup of our society in terms of sex, race, age, et cetera, changes, so do many structural and cultural elements of society. How would our society be different if most of the population was under the age of 10? Or over the age of 70?
Ideas and Change: Technology is often a driving force behind social change and has brought significant changes to our society. Think back to twenty years ago—how different was society in terms of technology? How did that impact your everyday life? In our current time, our cell phone alarm wakes us up, we check our smart phone, make some coffee in our Keurig, remote start our car, and then use our navigation system to get us to work. This is a significantly different experience than we had twenty years ago.

Background: Sociological imagination is a phrase from sociologist C. Wright (The Promise). Mills was interested in how an average American understood his or her everyday life. It is hard to see the larger picture and how your life fits in. Sociological imagination is a quality of mind that can be developed with conscientious practice, and that helps you understand the larger meanings of experiences. To use the sociological imagination, it is important to pay attention to the social and historical context in which we find ourselves. For this paper, you will need to select a social issue from the list below and analyze it from the perspective of a Structural Functionalist, a Conflict Theorist, and a Symbolic Interactionist. Functionalism is a macro-level theory that looks at the different structures of society like organs in the body - a bunch of different parts working together to maintain the equilibrium of the whole. When functionalists look at an enduring aspect of society, they think, "What is its purpose? What function does this serve?" The functionalism paradigm seeks to understand how all aspects of society, even those that may seem negative or harmful, contribute to the continuity of society, so this perspective tends to bring an optimistic point of view of to social issues.
Conflict theory also takes a macro-level view of society, but this perspective tends to bring a more pessimistic point of view to social issues. Conflict theorists see the world as divided into two groups: a dominant group and a subordinate group. These two groups are in constant conflict, competition, or struggle over control of power and resources, but the dominant group puts structures and institutions in place to maintain control of these resources. The father of conflict theory, Karl Marx, defined the dominant and subordinate group by economic conditions, but more contemporary adaptations of conflict theory define the dominant and subordinate groups along other dimensions. For example, feminist theory defines these groups by gender and critical race theory by race and ethnicity. Regardless of the dimension used to define the dominant and subordinate groups, conflict theorists are interested in analyzing the social forces that maintain inequalities (usually with an eye toward dismantling and changing those systems).
Symbolic interactionism is a micro-level theory, so the type of analysis performed using this perspective will look very different from the macro-level theories above. Symbolic interactionists are interested in interactions and communication between individuals and small groups. Communication, in all its various forms (writing, singing, painting), is a series of symbols, and proponents of this perspective are interested in understanding how we make sense of these symbols and the world around us. How do we imbue meaning and value into these symbols? How do these meanings and values shape how we see the world? How are these meanings and values shared through interaction? How are they changed through interactions?

Sociology reveals that we live in a stratified society. An individual person’s access to social resources and opportunities varies markedly depending on numerous

Social policy is an excellent avenue for achieving social justice
because it moves human and economic resources and facilitates enacting concrete actions for concrete change. Importantly, it allocates our combined social wealth (tax dollars, human energy). We can continue to invest policy dollars and energy into war, policing, punishment, and corporate welfare--deepening the existing social relationships and macro patterns of unequal power. Another route, already underway, is to shift our resources toward policy efforts that address social inequities at their roots, and nourish healthy communities. Background: Sociological imagination is a phrase from sociologist C. Wright (The Promise). Mills was interested in how an average American understood his or her everyday life. He found that people’s understandings of the world are limited by the social situations they find themselves in, particularly their family, friends, schools, and workplaces. It is hard to see the larger picture and how your life fits in. Sociological imagination is a quality of mind that can be developed with conscientious practice, and that helps you understand the larger meanings of experiences. In particular, it helps you connect private troubles or choices to public issues, and to understand the influence of culture, socialization, stratification on your life and lives of others. To use the sociological imagination, it is important to pay attention to the social and historical context in which we find ourselves. This does not mean that the social context determines what happens to us entirely. Rather, our choices are shaped by the society we live in and larger forces.

For this paper, you will need to select a social issue from the list below and analyze it from the perspective of a Structural Functionalist, a Conflict Theorist, and a Symbolic Interactionist. Then you'll conclude your paper with an evaluation of the relevance / helpfulness of each perspective for understanding your chosen social issue.
Functionalism is a macro-level theory that looks at the different structures of society like organs in the body - a bunch of different parts working together to maintain the equilibrium of the whole. When functionalists look at an enduring aspect of society, they think, "What is its purpose? What function does this serve?" The functionalism paradigm seeks to understand how all aspects of society, even those that may seem negative or harmful, contribute to the continuity of society, so this perspective tends to bring an optimistic point of view of to social issues.
Conflict theory also takes a macro-level view of society, but this perspective tends to bring a more pessimistic point of view to social issues. Conflict theorists see the world as divided into two groups: a dominant group and a subordinate group. These two groups are in constant conflict, competition, or struggle over control of power and resources, but the dominant group puts structures and institutions in place to maintain control of these resources. The father of conflict theory, Karl Marx, defined the dominant and subordinate group by economic conditions, but more contemporary adaptations of conflict theory define the dominant and subordinate groups along other dimensions. For example, feminist theory defines these groups by gender and critical race theory by race and ethnicity. Regardless of the dimension used to define the dominant and subordinate groups, conflict theorists are interested in analyzing the social forces that maintain inequalities (usually with an eye toward dismantling and changing those systems).
Symbolic interactionism is a micro-level theory, so the type of analysis performed using this perspective will look very different from the macro-level theories above. Symbolic interactionists are interested in interactions and communication between individuals and small groups. Communication, in all its various forms (writing, singing, painting), is a series of symbols, and proponents of this perspective are interested in understanding how we make sense of these symbols and the world around us. How do we imbue meaning and value into these symbols? How do these meanings and values shape how we see the world? How are these meanings and values shared through interaction? How are they changed through interactions?

Social policy is an excellent avenue for achieving social justice
because it moves human and economic resources and facilitates enacting concrete actions for concrete change. Importantly, it allocates our combined social wealth (tax dollars, human energy). We can continue to invest policy dollars and energy into war, policing, punishment, and corporate welfare--deepening the existing social relationships and macro patterns of unequal power. Another route, already underway, is to shift our resources toward policy efforts that address social inequities at their roots, and nourish healthy communities. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Using sociological perspectives and concepts, your paper will explain the factors, sources, and consequences of change in economy and religion and choose, like the TEDTalk presenters you have listened to throughout this course, the conclusion of your paper should provide your own perspective on social change and the impact of social change on your life. This assignment requires you to develop a paper, 5-10 pages, formatting using APA Style. Instructions 1.Write a research paper that documents past, present, and future social change in relation to religion and economy and demonstrates your understanding of sociological perspectives and concepts. 2.Your project should follow standard APA Style guidelines and include the following major sections: Title page Abstract Introduction : A good introduction summarizes what you will cover in the paper; describe the problem or question you will be discussing or analyzing. It is a roadmap for the reader, so you may want to touch on each of the key points briefly Economy and Religion)

- 3. industrialization, modernization, urbanization, and/or globalization Effects of social change, including technology, population, environment, and/or social movements intended and unintended consequences of social change Conclusion : Your conclusion should restate what you covered in your paper and include the key points (match this to your points in the introduction so the paper is consistent). As part of the conclusion, offer your personal perspective of social change within the two social institutions. Reflect on specific changes that have happened in your life as a result of social change, as well as future changes that you think may happen or about which you are concerned. Then, write a final wrap-up sentence that sums up your thoughts about what you have learned from the project. References : For general formatting of the title, abstract, and reference pages. Your paper should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins on 8½ x 11-inch paper, using 12-point font. The minimum length requirement including the Title and Reference pages is 5 to 10 pages. Your paper should incorporate at least five academically credible sources.
