History Of Young Person Check 2012/2013…successful sexual health programme, defunded by the State Gov’t. 2013…GYHSAC decided to continue the programme. 2013-2014…YPC expanded to include a brief health check involving the GP’s. 2015…health check expanded to include emotional health screening. 2016…More in depth health check, and JCU conducted 2 research programmes about the YPC 2017 …more streamlined emotional health screening, PHQ9 adapted to PHQ8, then PHQ4.

Recruiters Pathway Young Person Check • The peer worker/recruiter approach is very positive for the community as it builds leadership and empowers young people. • Induction Workshop for employed Recruiters • Cultural Awareness Training • Outreach Promotion & Education Door knocking in Community.

Delivery of Young Person’s Check • Annual screening programme of 340 young people Aged between 15-24yrs in Yarrabah for STI’s and early markers of chronic disease. • Held across 4 weeks in March/April for the past 6 years. • Good buy in from local youths • Coordinated by the Gurriny Sexual Health team, that is supported by Various programme areas at Gurriny. • The YPC is about engaging young people early and giving them ownership over their health • Very important programme considering the recent outbreaks of Syphilis and HIV in FNQ.

Beneficial Outcomes • The YPC has consistently been a very positive event in Yarrabah. • One of the best outcomes has been the progressive engagement of young people in health consciousness • For the 15-19 yr old age group it is mostly about the incentives, and attending with their friends • For the 20-25 yr old age group, there is an engagement in wanting to know more about their health, and being proactive around healthy lifestyles

- Just quickly a bit about Gurriny and Yarrabah. Is the land of the Gunganghi people 2016 census data 2550 (7% increase from 2011 census) This is thought to underestimate the true number of residents, as we know our mob are always undercounted in the national census Gurriny health records have 3397 patients 83% are active clients with a Yarrabah address the other 17% are Yarrabah people who live in Carins and surrounding areas who will do the hour drive to Yarrabah to see their Dr as know they will receive good health care from Gurriny. Depending on which data source Yarrabah is the largest Aboriginal Community.
- Together with my fellow co-workers, we are going to share our story of a very successful programs that we run at Gurriny each year “The Young Person’s Health Check” The NACCHO theme “Because of them we must” is very fitting when you see why it is so important that we invest in our youths, our future , this is also a very important age group that we as a sector must tackle…. We will have a number of presenters today, Tamar and Katrina together will talk about the YPC (young persons check) Then we will have the youths talk about their experience being part of the YPC The presentation will cover the history of YPC, how it morphed in a very successful screening program, research and ongoing challenges, it will pick up areas of population, screening processes and health management Gurriny is committed to our young people and where ever possible we will invest in them, we run a number of programs to improve the health outcomes of our young people, from……. 0 – 4 (child health checks) 5- 14 (back to school checks) 15- 24 (YPC), annual youth summit, youth attending state and national youth summits, Yarrabah Leaders Forum (YLF) & now infrastructure (out new youth hub)
- For the past 5 years Gurriny have been running the the annual youth summit, each year there are different themes, like looking after your mates, the ripple effect, & this year will be........ it was the young people who initiated the hub idea from the youth summit that the Youth have been asking for a place of their own a safe place a hang out place & last week we opened out new youth hub
- We have a very young population then that of wider Australia There is an even number of age range distribution There are an equal number of men and women in the community. We have around 630 young people between the ages of 15 – 24yrs (our target when running the young persons health check is around 340)
- Good Morning ,my name is Katrina Connolly a IHW working at Gurriny Yealamucka Health Service , before I go on I would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of this land on which we are meeting on today the Larrikia People I would like to show my respect to the Elders , Past ,Present & Emerging. My tribal group is Gimuy Walburra Yidinji & Kuku Yulanji. Clan in FNQ. Today I would like to talk about the YPC Health Check which is also known as 715 health check. Young Person Health Check (YPC) targets youths 15 to 24 years and initially was a screening tool for STI’s. Over time, Gurriny expanded the program to check for Chronic Disease risk markers and in 2016 markers for Depression. This expansion is aligned directly with our concerns that in Yarrabah we need to screen earlier and invest in targeted prevention programs for the younger population. On the chronic disease front, the YPC has enabled us to detect a few cases of anaemia, nutritional deficiency, and most commonly cholesterol. In the over 20 age group, there was a 25% incidence of obesity and early elevation of BP. In this age group we have noted a strong desire to be engaged in their health care and a willingness to take on board health messages re healthy eating, regular exercise and smoking cessation. One of the most powerful aspects of the YPC has been the engagement of young people in their health care, and the regular hosting of this event has broken down some of the barriers that prevent young people from engaging in health assessment and healthy lifestyles. Each year we have over 340 participated. This level of uptake is indicative of how youth are responding with trust and ownership of an annual health check. Its always important to do evaluation and Research our programs as Evidence base data influence service delivery as well as health outcomes
- The Recruiters gain employment over the period of YPC , Promotion Screening Engagement
- The delivery of the Program has been a success story in the community and is a ongoing program that the community Youths look forward to Yearly.
