sustained investment in the operation, repair and maintenance of
water hardware.
• Work with State and Territory Governments to support continued
and expanded roles for environmental health workers in embedding
elements of the SAFE strategy.
• Agree a long term investment plan to achieve safe and affordable
remote housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Support trachoma and trichiasis training for primary care staff who
work closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,
particularly ACCHO staff.

Strong eyes, strong communities recommends:

people who need them through phased expansion of
current schemes from 2021-22.”

Strong eyes, strong communities recommendations:
“Support development of a national strategy to promote the
early identification and management of vision problems in
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.”
12. Opportunities for input

implementation of Strong eyes, strong communities
• Upcoming community engagement workshops are an
opportunity for ACCHOs to contribute to the implementation
of the plan
• Join us in advocacy efforts to ensure Australian Governments
commit to recommendations, including embedding eye health
in ACCHOs
Editor's Notes
Good afternoon.
In beginning, I wish to acknowledge and pay my respect to the Arrernte (pronounced Arrunda) people as the traditional owners of Mparntwe (pronounced m’barn-twa), the land on which we meet today.(nb: Mparntwe is the Arrente name for Alice Springs).
I would also like to acknowledge Arrernte Elders past and present
As well as other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders who are here today
This time last week Health Ministers from across the nation gathered in Adelaide for the Council of Australian Governments Health Council meeting, where they considered a range of plans to address high priority health issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, including a five year plan for eye health and vision: Strong eyes, strong communities
We heard from Minister Hunt and Minister Wyatt last week at the conclusion of that meeting (and again from Minister Wyatt yesterday) that States and Territories have agreed to work with the Commonwealth to end avoidable Indigenous blindness, after considering our Plan Strong eyes, strong communities .
