The Yoruba tribe originated in Nigeria and numbered around 10,000 people at the time of Nigerian independence in 1960. They lived in towns and cities and made their livings through farming, weaving, blacksmithing and other crafts. The Yoruba established several powerful kingdoms, most notably Ife and Oyo, though internal conflicts and European colonization eventually contributed to their decline. Yoruba culture is expressed through diverse artforms like sculpture, beadwork, masks, and traditions like divination and festivals.
