In modern times when the grandest art and science of Yoga has been reduced to a skeletal manifestation of mere physical postures with a little breath manipulation and some so called meditation, Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri’s contribution to the development of Yoga in the past century and his codification of these ancient teachings in a modern scientific manner is unparalleled. Pujya Swamiji’s teachings like him are huge and are seemly never ending in their depth and multidimensional manifestation.
This short article presents some core concepts that are unique to this living tradition, now known worldwide as the Gitananda Yoga or Rishiculture Ashtanga Yoga tradition.
Yoga as a mode of therapy (Yoga Chikitsa) has become extremely popular and a great number of studies and systematic reviews offer scientific evidence of its potential in treating a wide range of psychosomatic conditions. Yoga understands health and well-being as a dynamic continuum of human nature and not merely a ‘state’ to be reached and maintained. Yoga helps the individual to establish sukha sthanam which may be defined as a dynamic sense of physical mental and spiritual well-being. .
This book is primarily an anthology of articles on Yoga and Yoga Therapy penned by Dr Ananda and others close to him that have appeared in various Yoga Journals worldwide in recent years. The aim of this collection is to stimulate and motivate Yoga enthusiasts and medical professionals alike to make an effort towards understanding the great depth and wide scope of Yoga chikitsa the application of Yoga as an integrative mode of therapy.
The need of the hour is for a symbiotic relationship between Yoga and modern science. To satisfy this need living human bridges combining the best of both worlds need to be cultivated. It is important that more dedicated scientists take up Yoga and that more Yogis study science so that we can build a bridge between these two great evolutionary aspects of our civilization. This book reiterates the concept that Yoga is all about becoming "one" with an integrated state of being and that the modern tendency of Yogopathy in contrast is more about "doing" than "being".

“A Primer of Yoga Theory”, the book by Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani dealing with literary and philosophical aspects of Yoga was officially released in 2004 and the 5th edition will be released by Ammaji on her 74th birthday in September 2017.
This is a sample of the contents of the book that is useful for all those interested in learning more about the theoretical and philosophical aspects of Yoga.
It is beneficial for those undergoing University as well as college education in Yoga as it is a useful quick reference guide to innumerable concepts. The neat index is an added bonus to help in quick reference of topics.
As the easiest way to learn is through question and answer models this book is presented in the question and answer pattern. The material given in this book is merely a beginning and the Sadhaka must actualize these concepts in themselves through extensive contemplation and self-analysis.
Model theory papers are also given at the end of the book so that similar papers can be used in theory exams.
The book has 19 chapters that deal with questions and answers on topics such as What is Yoga, Yogic prayers, Ashtanga Yoga, Yama and Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Hatha Yoga: The Physical Science of Balance, Chakras, Nature of Man, Yogic Texts, Yoga Sadhana, Yoga Therapy, Yoga In Modern India, Yoga and Sports, Stress: the Bane of Modern Living, and also has a lot of useful Quiz and Viva Questions as well as Model Theory Papers.
A special attraction is the Mahabharatha Quiz that helps us to understand the epic much better.

Prof Madanmohan, Director Professor of Physiology in JIPMER, Pondicherry, India is a pioneer in integrating yoga and modern medicine. He had given yog training to many batches of medical students, school children, police personnel and hospital patients with the aim of determining the effectiveness of yog as a health-promoting and therapeutic intervention.
The results had been gratifying and many papers published in indexed journals. It was however his heart’s desire to introduce yog to medical students as a branch of physiology and contemporary medicine. The opportunity came with financial support from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, New Delhi. With the aim of motivating 30 students to join the initial programme, he took introductory lecture for the batch of 2008.
However, after the introductory lecture, many students wanted to join and he enlisted the entire batch (n=100) for the programme.
The objectives of the programme were:
1. To promote awareness among medical students about the effectiveness of yog as an inexpensive means for achieving holistic health.
2. To impart knowledge, skill & attitude about the theoretical & practical aspects of yogic science.
3. To motivate medical students to take up further studies, therapy & research in yog.
4. To introduce yog in medical curriculum as a branch of physiology & contemporary medicine.
Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj is truly one of the most astounding human beings to have graced this planet in the last century. His contribution to the growth and development of Yoga in modern times is significant and it reenergised the true spirit of Yoga worldwide.
This book lovingly compiled by one of his dear students, Yogacharya Dr. Alan Davis of the UK, enables the reader to understand the grand unified perspective, the “Yoga Dristhi” of the Yoga Maharishi that may be best defined in Pujya Swamiji’s own words thus :
“Yoga Dristhi implies a Unified Perception which encompasses all aspects of evolutionary life on this planet, and not just perceptions based on information fed to us through our sensual organs… Perception also involves right knowledge, intuitive insight and proper judgement to qualify under Yoga Dristhi.”
May this book stimulate us all to delve deeper in to our Yoga Sadhana thus enabling us to grow and glow with the true eternal spirit of Yoga, the Mother of all Sciences.
Concepts of Yoga explained in easy terms with reference to their relation ton the numbers. Especially useful for those wanting to learn Yoga theory in an enjoyable manner and a great gift for children. It also contains an excellent introduction to the concepts of Yantra.

Yin Yoga, a practice rooted in Taoist principles, focuses on deep stretching and passive poses held for extended periods to stimulate the connective tissues and release tension. By surrendering to each pose, practitioners cultivate mindfulness and develop a deeper connection with their bodies and emotions.

Yoga is a physical and mental practice that involves the body, mind and spirit. The practice, which originated in India, is designed to enhance awareness, create a mind-body-spirit balance, cleanse, heal and strengthen the body, liberate the true self and, as practiced today, improve fitness. The most common form practiced in the United States is hatha yoga, which includes specific movements or postures (asana) and various breathing techniques (pranayama) and is often complimented with meditation (dhyana).

For devoted practitioners, yoga provides a source of strength and equilibrium as well as a refuge where they can seek insight when facing challenges in their lives. Modern yogis have come to understand why this ancient practice has stood the test of time and how relevant it can be for their daily life. But for those who haven’t yet discovered the benefits of practicing yoga on a regular basis - and know little about it aside from the stereotypes - it may be more difficult to comprehend its lasting appeal.

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. Become a
Teacher at
Palolem Beach
Yoga is an ancient technology of personal
transformation. Its tools are remarkably simple, and yet,
its effects are profound.
The true power of yoga lies not in the strength and
vitality it gives the physical body (though this is
undeniable), but rather in the profoundly positive ways it
can change our entire human system. Yoga can refine the
mind, clear negative emotions, create positive habits and
behaviors, improve our relationships and potentially
bring forth profound spiritual experiences.
UYLS is conducting these Yoga Courses at one of the
most beautiful beach in the world - Colomb, Palolem,
Goa. Colomb - Palolem Beach is largely unspoiled and is
inhabited by both local fishermen and by foreign tourists
who live in shacks along the shore or in the main village
itself. It is about one mile (approximately 1.61 km) long
and is crescent-shaped; one can view the entire beach
from either end. Both ends of the beach consist of rocks
jutting out into the sea. The depth of the sea increases
gradually, being shallowest at the northern end of the
beach, making it safe for average swimmers, as the
currents too are not very fast.
The beach is featured as the Goan residence of Jason
Bourne (Matt Damon) in the film The Bourne Supremacy
(2004). The initial footage in the movie gives a good idea
of the natural beauty of the beach - the distinctive tree
covered rocks at one end (known locally as Green Island -
to which tours are run) and beach shacks. At the top of
the island adjoining Palolem Beach there is a stone
sculpture created by an American conceptual and land
artist Jacek Tylicki called "Give if you can – Take if you
have to" also called the "Money Stone". It became a
pilgrimage destination. At the low tide it is a tough jungle
walk and a guide is recommended. People can leave or
take money at will at the Money Stone. (From Wikipedia)
5. Transformational Training
Program
In short, the UYLS Yoga Teacher’s Training not only
provides clear, coherent and complete information
about yoga, it’s tools, philosophies and practices,
but it will also facilitate the personalized,
experiential support necessary to effectively
implement this into your life.
This training will result in a new you, with a new
perspective on life and relationship. It will be a more
authentic you; with actual and sustainable
behavioral change, developed out of deep,
experiential understanding and when it will be your
turn to help someone else, you will clearly
understand how to do that from a place of authentic
knowledge, personal experience and deep knowing.
This Program is Different....
One-on-One Mentorship
As a participant in the UYLS’s Training, you will
connect personally with International Yoga Guru
Pundit Radheshyam Mishra, who will:
• Guide and direct your daily, personal practice
• Answer informational questions related to
the training
• Mentor you in developing your yoga teaching
This personal support will hold you throughout the
course of the training and beyond. When tailored to
the individual needs and capabilities of each person,
the tools of yoga can coax tremendous positive
transformation out of us.
Authentic Teachings
Yoga is a practice that has been passed down from
one generation to the next for at least several
thousand years. It is an ancient discipline, with deep
theoretical and practical roots, and there is a rich
textual tradition that underlies and explains the
practice, its applications and its meaning.
Śri Yogendra from The Yoga Institute, Mumbai (The
oldest Yoga Institution) was one of the most
influential masters of yoga in modern times. His
knowledge of Yoga, Ayurveda, Sanskrit and the
primary Indian philosophical schools was unrivaled.
Yet the main focus of his energy and life-long work
was the study, practice and teaching of therapeutic
Yoga for supporting health, healing, and personal
transformation of house-holders.
Pundit Ji has studied in this tradition in 90’s and his
immediate guru is Dr. Jaydev Yogendra (Son of Shri
Yogendra). Yoga is a life-long path, which provides
ongoing opportunities for learning and refinement.
To be a good teacher requires that one be actively
applying what they are teaching. UYLS teacher’s
Training program models this inside and outside the
classroom.
Comprehensive, Coherent
Teachings
One of the most important aspects of Shri Yogendra’s
teaching is that they have shown, simply and clearly,
how all of the different aspects of yoga fit together as
a single, coherent whole. All of the pieces, including
movement/asana, breathing techniques/praṇayama,
meditation, gestures/nyasa, sound/mantra,
chanting, philosophy, ethics and daily life, etc., work
together as a single, unified practice.
At the UYLS Institute, we do not mix various
philosophical disciplines. This program is a
complete yoga program. Yoga for body, breath,
mind, philosophy, personal transformation,
therapeutics, etc.; all of it. And all of it explained in
ways that makes sense and applies to our modern
day culture and life. We’re sure you will find it very
intellectually satisfying and affirming to see and feel
how each aspect prepares for, aids and enables all
6. the others.
Beyond Information, Deeply
Experiential
The UYLS’s Teacher Training will provide you with a
deep understanding of:
How to practice and teach asana (physical
postures), including
• Techniques: how to correctly practice the
main postures, in the classical way
• Primary effects and purposes of each asana /
posture
• How to adapt each posture to achieve the
proper function of the posture
• How to organize postures into different
sequences to achieve different results.
Specifically this involves understanding the physical
requirements of each posture as well as the strain
each posture puts on the body/mind/breath and
how these can be utilized in combination with those
other postures. The resulting understanding is an
incredibly adaptable system for creating practices.
How to practice and teach praṇayama
(conscious breathing), including
• Definition of praṇayama, what it means, why
it’s practiced, etc.
• How to create a praṇayama practice
• How to develop the quality and length of the
breath
• Praṇayama techniques: how to practice, use
and teach different praṇayama techniques
• Praṇayama ratios: how to practice,
development and teach different breathing
ratios
How to practice and teach meditation
(dhyana), including :
• Different understandings of meditation: How
to create and develop meditation practices
• Meditation techniques: their practice, effects
and how to teach them
• Meditation objects: fundamentals of how to
choose them
How to practice yoga in daily life or ”off the
mat”, including
• In depth learning of Patañjali’s Yogasutra. This
is the traditional main presentation of how to
live the path of yoga.
• Overview of the Yoga teachings on navigating
difficult life situations
Personal Transformation,
The Foundation of Teaching.
Obviously, a lot of information is presented over the
course of the training, but the emphasis is always
how to apply the information and how to facilitate
the experiences. Yoga is not informational. Yoga is
experiential, it must be done, practiced and
experienced to be understood and to have an effect
on us and thus to change us. The UYLS’s training
emphasizes the practical application of yoga and its
tools. The training covers not only what the tools are,
but how to think about using them, how to
understand the way they function (according to the
traditional models within which they were created),
and how to use them. The result of this process is
self-transformation. Gradual, sustainable and
meaningful, personal transformation, achieved
through the immensely satisfying and interesting
path of yoga. These are proven and profound
teachings designed to help you, and therefore
students, achieve the joy, freedom and health of a
person in balance with their most authentic self.
7. A Therapeutic Tradition
The UYLS’s program provides a precious opportunity
to be trained in the therapeutic yoga tradition of Śri
Yogendra. A tradition rooted in “The Yoga Institute”, a
world famous and oldest Yoga Institute. The training
equips students with the tools, experiences and
understandings necessary to teach group classes and
general individual sessions in this tradition, where:
• The approach to healing is truly holistic;
the mind, body and spirit are seen as
completely interconnected, yet discernible
aspects of a single entity
• Where each person is viewed an individual;
the yoga is uncompromisingly adapted to
the student, and not just the student to the
yoga
• Where the student-teacher relationship has
always been viewed as the heart of the
teaching for the transformational process
The UYLS’s training is for anyone who is
ready to experience Yoga deeper. This

I want to thank you for these days in the
20th Immersion Teacher Training Course.
When I started two weeks ago I was very
exited over what was in front of me. And
this course has taught me more than I
could imagine. I have learned a lot about
yoga, philosophy and not at least about
myself. I had to face my weaknesses and
that was very scary, but very self
educational. Now I feel more confident
and have more faith in myself.
You are a great teacher that motivates
and inspirits, and you have learned me a
lot about life. I liked specially Yoga sutras
and learning all the asanas. Maybe I start
a yoga center one day.
