In modern times when the grandest art and science of Yoga has been reduced to a skeletal manifestation of mere physical postures with a little breath manipulation and some so called meditation, Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri’s contribution to the development of Yoga in the past century and his codification of these ancient teachings in a modern scientific manner is unparalleled. Pujya Swamiji’s teachings like him are huge and are seemly never ending in their depth and multidimensional manifestation.
This short article presents some core concepts that are unique to this living tradition, now known worldwide as the Gitananda Yoga or Rishiculture Ashtanga Yoga tradition.

Yoga as a mode of therapy (Yoga Chikitsa) has become extremely popular and a great number of studies and systematic reviews offer scientific evidence of its potential in treating a wide range of psychosomatic conditions. Yoga understands health and well-being as a dynamic continuum of human nature and not merely a ‘state’ to be reached and maintained. Yoga helps the individual to establish sukha sthanam which may be defined as a dynamic sense of physical mental and spiritual well-being. .
This book is primarily an anthology of articles on Yoga and Yoga Therapy penned by Dr Ananda and others close to him that have appeared in various Yoga Journals worldwide in recent years. The aim of this collection is to stimulate and motivate Yoga enthusiasts and medical professionals alike to make an effort towards understanding the great depth and wide scope of Yoga chikitsa the application of Yoga as an integrative mode of therapy.
The need of the hour is for a symbiotic relationship between Yoga and modern science. To satisfy this need living human bridges combining the best of both worlds need to be cultivated. It is important that more dedicated scientists take up Yoga and that more Yogis study science so that we can build a bridge between these two great evolutionary aspects of our civilization. This book reiterates the concept that Yoga is all about becoming "one" with an integrated state of being and that the modern tendency of Yogopathy in contrast is more about "doing" than "being".

Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani's talk for the World Yoga Festival 2020 Sunday afternoon sessions held on 19 July 2020 .
Yoga is the original mind body medicine and is one of the greatest treasures of the unique Indian cultural heritage. As both an art and science it has a lot to offer humankind in terms of an understanding of both the human mind as well as all aspects of our multilayered existence. Yogic lifestyle, Yogic diet, Yogic attitudes and various Yogic practices help man to strengthen himself and develop positive health thus enabling him to withstand stress better. This Yogic “health insurance” is achieved by normalizing the perception of stress, optimizing the reaction to it and by releasing it effectively through various practices. Yoga is truly a wholesome and integral science of life that deals with multidimensional aspects of health in both the individual and society.
Yoga helps us to take the appropriate attitude towards our challenges and thus tackle them effectively and efficiently. “To have the will (iccha shakti) to change (kriya shakti) that which can be changed, the strength to accept that which cannot be changed, and the wisdom (jnana shakti) to know the difference” is the attitude that needs to the cultivated. An attitude of letting go of the worries, the problems and a greater understanding of our mental process helps to create a harmony in our body, and mind whose disharmony is the main cause of ‘aadi – vyadhi’ or psychosomatic disorders.
“Health and happiness are your birthright, claim them and develop them to your maximum potential” (Giri, 1995). This message of Swamiji Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj is a firm reminder that the goal of human existence is not health and happiness but is moksha (liberation). Most people today are so busy trying to find health and happiness that they forget why they are here in the first place. Yoga is the best way for us to regain our birthrights and attain the goal of our human existence.

Effectiveness of Yoga on Mental Health of Studentsijtsrd
Mental health is mainly concerned with the maintenance of the health of human mind. Along with physical health to maintain a balance state of mind is very important. Today keeping up mental health is one of the serious problems of the entire world. Due to rapid growth of industrialization and modernization, an individual often fails to maintain a balance himself and his social circumstances. “Mental health is the full and harmonious functioning of the whole personality- Hadfield . Yoga is one of India’s most amazing gifts to mankind. It is the science of yoga which helps to develop a person in all the aspects of life such as physical, mental, emotional, moral, spiritual development etc. This chapter summarizes the recent research evidence based on effects of yoga on mental health of the students. Present chapter highlights the meaning of yoga, different yogic practices, importance of yoga to maintain a healthy lifestyle, benefits of yoga. These research reviews give an idea about several areas where yoga may be beneficial for the student as well as for the people of the society. More research article is required urgently on this relevant topic. This featured article published in Yoga Therapy Today of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, is a foundational piece that will no doubt inform many future discussions: Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Marlysa Sullivan, Matthew J. Taylor, and Amy Wheeler recommend a “common language to present yoga therapy” that includes an ability to accurately articulate key biomedical concepts to clients and other stakeholders in our services.
Yoga as a mode of therapy has become extremely popular, and a great number of studies and systematic reviews offer scientific evidence of its potential in treating a wide range of psychosomatic conditions. Healthy life can be considered as a by-product of practicing yogic techniques since it has been observed that yoga practitioners are physically and mentally healthier and have better coping skills to stressors than the normal population. This review paper details some of the health promoting benefits of yoga as well as discusses the important cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal and metabolic conditions in which it may have preventive, supportive, curative and rehabilitative potential. Role of yoga in stress, mental health, cancer, pregnancy and childhood are also detailed. Mechanisms for such beneficial physiological, biochemical and psychological effects are discussed. Psycho-neuro-endocrine changes including correction of GABAergic activity, and parasympathetic activation coupled with decreased reactivity of sympathoadrenal system and HPA axis are highlighted. Changes in the various evaluated parameters for different conditions are detailed and discussed with ample references. Though most studies and reviews suggest a number of areas where yoga may be beneficial, more research is required for virtually every one of them to establish their benefits conclusively. This is true in the process of introducing any new therapy into the modern health care system and is not surprising when we consider that the proper studies on yoga as a therapeutic modality are not older than a few decades. It is important to develop objective measures of various mind-body therapies and their techniques while including them in intervention trials. An overview is given of the lacunae present in the reviewed studies and suggestions given for improvements in future studies. In conclusion, we can say that yoga has preventive, promotive as well as curative potential and that a yogic lifestyle confers many advantages to the practitioner. Since lifestyle related diseases are alarmingly on the rise in our modern society, yogic lifestyle that is cost effective and relatively safe, should be given a special place in preventing and managing these diseases.

Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri Guru Maharaj is truly one of the most astounding human beings to have graced this planet in the last century. His contribution to the growth and development of Yoga in modern times is significant and it reenergised the true spirit of Yoga worldwide.
This book lovingly compiled by one of his dear students, Yogacharya Dr. Alan Davis of the UK, enables the reader to understand the grand unified perspective, the “Yoga Dristhi” of the Yoga Maharishi that may be best defined in Pujya Swamiji’s own words thus :
“Yoga Dristhi implies a Unified Perception which encompasses all aspects of evolutionary life on this planet, and not just perceptions based on information fed to us through our sensual organs… Perception also involves right knowledge, intuitive insight and proper judgement to qualify under Yoga Dristhi.”
May this book stimulate us all to delve deeper in to our Yoga Sadhana thus enabling us to grow and glow with the true eternal spirit of Yoga, the Mother of all Sciences.

In the last century, Yoga has developed in various directions and dimensions under the guidance of many eminent masters. These masters have codified their own Bani (styles) of Yoga that are often at variance with one another but all of them still maintain the traditional lineage to Yoga Vidya or the Science of Yoga. The term ‘unity in diversity’ is apt for these developments ad though on the surface the different traditions or Banis may appear to be even contradictory, they all ultimately lead to the same goal of spiritual union though in diverse paths. Major developments in recent times have been the extensive research done in the field of Yoga as well as the transformation of Yoga education from the Gurukula and Ashram settings to the college and university oriented Yoga. This essay is a humble attempt to summarize various developments of the last century with reference to the Indian geographical context.
NOTE: The author wishes to state that this is only a humble attempt to describe the efforts by various individuals and institutions in the propagation and development of Yoga in India in recent times. It is entirely possible that due to the author’s inexperience, ignorance or oversight he may have failed to mention some eminent personalities or institutions. A humble apology is tendered for such omissions and a request that these omissions be brought to his notice (ananda@icyer.com) so that they may be corrected.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati Life History and his Teachings
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was a spiritual leader and yoga guru who lived from 1923 to 2009. He was born in Almora, Uttarakhand, India, and was inspired to pursue a spiritual path from a young age.
In 1943, Satyananda met Swami Sivananda Saraswati and became his disciple. He served at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh and later went on to establish the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger, Bihar in 1963.
Satyananda developed a unique style of yoga known as "Bihar Yoga", which combined traditional yoga practices with modern scientific knowledge. He also developed a system of yoga known as "Yoga Nidra", which is a guided relaxation technique that promotes deep relaxation and inner awareness.
Satyananda was a prolific writer and author, with over 80 books on yoga, meditation, and spiritual practice. He also established the Yoga Publications Trust, which has published numerous books and magazines on yoga and spirituality.
Satyananda's teachings emphasized the practice of yoga as a means to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual health. He believed that yoga could be used to awaken the dormant potential of the human mind and to promote spiritual evolution.
Satyananda also emphasized the importance of karma yoga, or selfless service, as a means of spiritual growth. He believed that through selfless service, one could cultivate humility, compassion, and detachment, and ultimately transcend the limitations of the ego.
Satyananda passed away in 2009, but his legacy continues to inspire and influence yoga practitioners and spiritual seekers around the world. The Bihar School of Yoga and other organizations continue to promote his teachings and philosophy, spreading the message of yoga and spirituality to people around the world.
Swami Satyananda Saraswati and his teachings
Swami Satyananda Saraswati was a renowned yoga guru who is best known for his teachings on the practical applications of yoga in daily life. He believed that yoga is not just a physical exercise, but a way of life that can help people to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Satyananda's teachings were based on the ancient teachings of yoga, but he also incorporated modern scientific knowledge into his approach to make it accessible to people from all walks of life. He believed that yoga could help people to overcome the challenges of modern life and find inner peace and happiness.
One of Satyananda's major contributions to the world of yoga was his development of a system of yoga called "Bihar Yoga". This system combined traditional yoga practices with modern scientific knowledge and included practices like asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), meditation, and yoga nidra (a guided relaxation technique). Bihar Yoga is still widely practiced today and has helped many people to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Satyananda also emphasized the importance of karma yoga, or selfless service,
Yoga is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. Yoga is one of the six Āstika schools of Indian philosophical traditions. There is a broad variety of yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

In modern times when the grandest art and science of Yoga has been reduced to a
skeletal manifestation of mere physical postures with a little breath manipulation and
some so called meditation, Yogamaharishi Dr Swami Gitananda Giri’s contribution to the
development of Yoga in the past century and his codification of these ancient teachings
in a modern scientific manner is unparalleled. Pujya Swamiji’s teachings like him are
huge and are seemly never ending in their depth and multidimensional manifestation.
This short article presents some core concepts that are unique to this living tradition,
now known worldwide as the Gitananda Yoga or Rishiculture Ashtanga Yoga tradition.
1. YOGA IS A WAY OF LIFE:
Yoga is not something you do but a way of life to be lived 60/60/24/7/365/x. It is
the conscious transformation from a state of “doing” to a state of “being”. This
requires immense introspection, consciousness, awareness, dedication and
determination. Many will exclaim that this is easy to say and tough to do but
Swamiji has “walked his talk” and showed us how to do it by his magnificent example
and it is now unto us to follow him.
2. CREATE GURUS NOT FOLLOWERS:
Swamiji never desired huge numbers of students, a multitude of ashrams, name,
fame or a vast organizational empire. All that mattered to him was the growth of
the student and he aimed to help manifest their inherent potential even if they
later hated him for it! Each and every one of Swamiji’s students became “the best”
they could have been in this lifetime. Each one of them is truly an individual and
Swamiji brought out the best in each one. No stereotyping or mass mould production
at all. In fact, I would venture to say that Swamiji made them all so aware of their
inherent Divine nature that many a time they actually forgot him!!
3. BREATH IS LIFE:
Though there has been some interest in Pranayama in recent times, no other system
seems to even come close to Swamiji in terms of the vast repertoire and depth of
2. Core concepts of the Gitananda Yoga tradition by AB Bhavanani. www.icyer.com Page 2
his Pranayama teachings. He was truly a grand master of this intricate and detailed
science of subtle energy. In this tradition, great emphasis is placed on learning how
to breathe properly and the students start with the Vibhagha Pranayama and then
step-by-step build up towards the knowledge and practice of more than 120
intricate Pranayamas. All of this is done so that Prana, that vital cosmic catalyst
may naturally fill each and every one of our trillions of cells with life and light.
4. NO OPTION YOGA:
Swamiji termed Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga as the “No Option Yoga” and placed great
importance on a deep understanding of the Yamas and Niyamas which are the firm
foundation upon which the real Yoga life can be built. “You wouldn’t build a colossal
building without a foundation but you want to do it with Yoga?” he would ask
numerous easy going aspirants who wanted some ‘quick fix’ Yoga.
5. STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH:
Every aspect of Swamiji’s teachings follows a step-by-step, structured approach
that is easy to follow, detailed and methodical. Emphasis is placed on learning and
re-learning the proceeding steps until the teachings are well digested, before
proceeding any further on the path. “No shortcuts please” was his constant refrain
for it is always better to be slow and steady, than fast and sorry. Great emphasis is
placed on growing into the practice rather then forcing oneself into it thus enabling
growth to occur at all levels. This is one of the reasons why the use of props and
other contraptions that have made modern Yoga so costly today have never been
part of this tradition.
6. LOVE FOR INDIAN CULTURE:
One of the major issues facing Yoga in the West is the fact that Yoga has been
cleaved away from Indian Culture (Sanathana Dharma). Without an understanding of
the Indian (Hindu) culture and the way of life from which Yoga originated, it is very
difficult to find answers for many questions confronting the sincere seeker.
Swamiji tried to inculcate in his students a deep love and understanding of the
ancient living culture from which Yoga has sprung. Our most loving Ammaji has
continued by enriching this tradition by her unique contribution to the cultural
renaissance in nationally and internationally.
7. BOUNTIFUL PRACTICES:
Scores and scores of practices and techniques are part of this tradition that has
numerous Hatha, Laya and Jnana Yoga practices for the sincere aspirant. Polarity
practices and the Mantra Laya deserve special mention as also the Laya Yoga Kriyas.
3. Core concepts of the Gitananda Yoga tradition by AB Bhavanani. www.icyer.com Page 3
To the best of my knowledge, the intricate and in-depth understanding of the
twelve Chakras, Nadis and Bindus etc gleamed from the Dakshina Marga Tantra
tradition of Yogamaharishi Swami Kanakananda Brighu is not found elsewhere. Each
of these practices and concepts have multiple levels for the sincere seeker and
those who have gone deep into them understand that they are not mere playthings
at all, for they are indeed very powerful and life transforming.
8. YANTRA, IN TUNE WITH NATURE:
In this Paramparai there are three important sciences, namely Mantra, Yantra and
Tantra. Yantra is the mystical science of number, name and form and is a method by
which one can live to learn “in tune” with the cycles of the universe rather than be
“off tune” with those very cycles. According to the Yantric concept as taught by
Swamiji each number has a special quality to it and is not merely a measure of
quantity as is usually presumed. Every aspect of life goes through a phase of Nines.
This phase may be nine years, nine months, nine weeks or even nine days. This
concept can be further extended both ways to go up to nine milliseconds on one
hand and nine lifetimes on the other.
9. MUDRAS, DIVINE COMMUNICATION:
One of the main features of the Gitananda tradition is the detailed exposition and
understanding of Mudra, the ancient Yogic art and science of gesturing and sealing
vital Pranic energies. These advanced techniques designed to improve neuromuscular
coordination, culture human emotions and still the restless mind are a means of non-
verbal communication that is subtle and refined. They enable us to communicate
intra-personally with our inner self, interpersonally with others and trans-personally
with the Divine. The Oli Mudra teachings as well as the usage of Hastha Mudras in
the Vibhagha and Pranava Pranayamas are unique to this tradition.
Pujya Swamiji was in tune with the Akashic record (the cosmic living storehouse of
wisdom) as there is no other way one can explain the phenomenal and limitless
knowledge and wisdom that sprouted forth through his eloquent roar of truth. “Health
and happiness are your birthright, claim them and develop them to your maximum
potential as you evolve towards liberation”. This message of Swamiji is a firm reminder
that the goal of human existence is not health and happiness but is Moksha (liberation).
Most people today are so busy trying to find health and happiness that they forget why
they are here in the first place. The art and science of Yoga truly helps us regain our
birthrights and attain the goal of human life. May we always be worthy of these great
teachings and may his blessings always be with us as we traverse the evolutionary path
he envisioned for us.
