Bridging the Digital Divide:
New Media training strategies for language tutors
By Benoît Guilbaud
“Languages for the 21st century: Training, impact and influence” The Edge, University of Sheffield
1-2 September 2010
New technologies and Media Literacy are increasingly proving a prevalent aspect of every discipline and profession. Yet, discrepancies in their implementation and development are everywhere to be seen. In this paper, I propose to focus on specific strategies aiming at mending the existing gap between the ever-advancing learning technologies and the way they are really put into practice in language teaching in British Higher Education.
The development of new media literacy in language teaching faces a number of challenges and obstacles. I shall focus on one of the major obstacles which I have come across as a classroom practitioner: the disparities in accessing, understanding and using new technologies among both staff and students. The problem originates from a variety of sources: generational gap, social diversity, lack of financial or technical support, all recognised in Warschauer’s gradation-based redefined concept of digital divide (2002).
Focusing on academic and technical staff training, several solutions can be thought of in order to easily and affordably implement some of the latest recommendations made by the New Media Consortium’s Horizon Project in the Horizon Report 2010. These solutions will address the problems of workload distribution, human and financial resources allocation with a particular focus on balancing the ratio between hardware, software and human investments, as well as raising awareness of the importance of new media and its impact on independent learning personal development and employability.
These strategies are designed with quantifiable objectives in mind. They can rationalise costs and prevent technological resources from being misused or unused, thereby losing a large proportion of their economical value over time. They can also enhance learner autonomy and student employability, which are two measurable factors.

Abstract:
Gesture-based interfaces to control systems using full body or upper torso motions are becoming more common, particularly in the entertainment industry but increasingly in other domains. These interfaces may represent significant hurdles for individuals with motion or balance impairments. Even for non-impaired users, commands which are not readily represented by body mimicry require users to learn new non-intuitive gestures for adding layers of complexity in commands. In this paper, a reflection and clarification of these challenges is presented, based on some sample usage cases. Then a possibly solution path is presented, resorting to an idea originating in a science fiction novel, the shamanic interface imagined by Daniel Suarez. A reflection on its feasibility and on possible paths towards its creation is presented, as well as the possible impacts to render gesture-based interfaces more accessible to all and potentially easier to learn due to enhanced cultural awareness. The basic idea presented in this reflection paper is that the creation of a concern-separation layer between the gestures being executed by the users and their interpretation by computing systems can contribute both to the access by users with special needs and to all users in general, by enabling customized approaches to gesture-based control..

Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to Food and Agricultural Engineering students requires language instructors to design a varied range of activities aimed at helping students familiarise themselves with their subject matter areas in English and develop their professional (Ibrahim, 2010) and critical thinking skills (Šliogerienė, 2005).
This study was carried out in the context of the VELCOME project (Virtual Exchange for Learning and Competence Development in EMI Classroom), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The main activities of this part of the project were carried out online by our Food and Agricultural Engineering students, who were following a compulsory English for Professional and Academic Communication course. The main goal was to offer the participants opportunities to use their knowledge and expertise to move towards a more sustainable world while fostering their civic and entrepreneurial competences. To do this, they were required to design and develop a fictitious start-up, in English through asynchronous and synchronous telecollaboration (Belz, 2003) to practice these competences. In the asynchronous stage the students designed Padlet posters. After this stage, the participants took part in a synchronous virtual meeting via Zoom, where each group was given the opportunity to present their start-ups to the members of a different team. This study explores students’ preliminary learning results, the development of civic and entrepreneurial competences through virtual exchanges as well as the difficulties and benefits of carrying out an experiment involving participants from different groups with different profiles and interests.

The Immersive Learning Knowledge Tree is a conceptual framework that supports a common understanding of the diverse field of immersive learning. The ILKT is based on 1) The premise of the importance of developing a common language; 2) The premise of the importance of not only using similar terminology as other researchers, but also having a deep understanding of how the methods researchers utilize in their own research are similar or different from those used by others; and 3) The premise of advancing the use of common theoretical approaches and models. Since its initial inception, the ILKT has developed core concepts, methods, outcomes, and tools/instruments. The ILKT also has significant plans for future development. This presentation will provide a brief overview of what the ILKT is, what has been done to develop it thus far, and what our plans are for the future.

Empowering humans in immersive learning environmentsLeonel Morgado
Keynote at ACM IMX 2022, XR-WALC workshop. Abstract:
You dare plowing through immersive learning environments. The jungle surrounds you and entices you, but also hampers your progress. Suddenly, activities you deemed plain are out of reach, like practicing team sports, while exotic ones are readily available, like visiting the molecular structure of materials. Relentlessly, you plow on, trusting your trail of experience to support your safe return, but the jungle overgrows it rapidly: your plans meet unexpected circumstances, like connectivity issues, lack of situational awareness, or sheer inadequacy to new realities: why assess by quizzing or milestones when we are immersed in situational evidence, for instance?
In this talk, I will address two main questions and provide examples and pathways to address them, by sharing my previous efforts on this regard:
- How can immersive environments expand the range of educational dynamics and subjects that online learning can provide?
- How can we have widespread deployment of immersive environments?
Initially, I will present an overview on the multifaceted concept of immersion, a phenomenon emerging from the combination of presence within a system, and psychological absorption by narratives and agency. A panorama of current uses, practices, and strategies of immersive learning environments will be provided, and two approaches for the main questions will be provided: the concept and use of virtual choreographies for semantic-based deployment and recording of immersive content, and the Inven!RA architecture for mapping analytics from immersive environments to learning objectives in plans.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
