Building a 'single digital presence' for public librariesFleurMartin3
This presentation is taken from a webinar the single digital presence team held with public library staff from across the UK. In it we communicate our latest vision for the project, outlining what we've been up to since the publication of our report and how we've refined our recommendations building on an extensive period of user research.
About the project: The Single Digital Presence project, based at the British Library is exploring how to improve digital services in the United Kingdom's public libraries. Our goal is to equip public libraries with the right tools and to increase public library use both on and offline.
You can find out more about our project by reading this blog:

This document summarizes the roles and services of the State Library of New South Wales and Public Library Services. It outlines that the State Library comprises three main libraries and over 340 staff. It then describes the four branches and 33 staff that make up Public Library Services and the programs they offer public libraries. Finally, it provides details on funding and grants that are provided to NSW public libraries, including an annual subsidy of $1.85 per capita.
The document discusses the state of public libraries in the UK and arguments for their continued support. It notes that UK libraries have faced 7.5% budget reductions and 10% cuts to materials budgets in recent years, resulting in staff losses. However, libraries still see over 321 million visits annually and provide important services to communities like free access to resources, programs, and study spaces. The document argues that libraries support priorities like education, employment, digital inclusion, and culture and that cuts risk losing more than they save for residents and politicians.
The document summarizes the services provided by the BCCC Learning Resources Center (LRC). The LRC oversees the library, media graphics, Blackboard, and North Carolina Information Highway. It provides library resources like online databases, an online catalog, interlibrary loans, and reserve materials. The Blackboard team supports the learning management system with training, course management, and 24/7 support. Audiovisual equipment is also available. Staff members and their roles are listed. LibGuides provide resources for distance learners and faculty.
The document summarizes presentations from the 2014 MLA/DLA Conference. It discusses several topics:
1) The Geek the Library campaign which aims to raise awareness of funding challenges for public libraries and encourage communities to support their local libraries.
2) Tips for creating dazzling library displays including using book bubbles, books of the day, and props to correspond with materials' checkout periods.
3) The importance of makerspaces in libraries and rethinking what types of programs can foster creative problem solving skills.
4) Recommendations for rearranging libraries using a grocery store model to guide patrons through the space and highlight essential and featured items.
This document discusses strategies for engaging the community at a university library. It notes that the library has dedicated teams for learning and teaching support and research liaison. These teams work to ensure resources meet the needs of students and researchers. The library relies on developing relationships with academic staff to build relevant collections and integrate library resources into academic work. Representatives from each academic department also help facilitate communication between the library and different subject areas. While engaging with students directly as well through surveys and publications, developing connections across the university community is an ongoing challenge that requires flexibility.
