YAMZ.net is a tool for taxonomy building. Metadata vocabulary standardization ranks among the most awful design-by-committee experiences, whether at the international standards level or at the working group level. We used a crowdsourced metadata dictionary with reputation-based voting, and in which every term gets a unique persistent identifier. In the second half, are exercises to see how it all works in practice.

The Center for Biodiversity Informatics at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Saint Louis University are analyzing the web annotation needs of the botanical community to develop a prototype of how those needs may be met within a digital library platform. We want to assess the practicality of existing tools to satisfy the technical, economic, and operational needs of botanical users to annotate. This will inform on requisites, best practices, and further developments for a research project to integrate an annotation tool within a virtual library. We surveyed 14 members of 10 different institutions in the botanical and scientific communities. We included both, those who currently annotate online as well as those who have only annotated offline (e.g. print or analog), in order to better understand the functionality needed to encourage and support online annotation activities. The answers to this survey were analyzed in the context of an annotation tool in a digital library and a prioritized list of annotation needs for users of a botanical virtual library was produced, taking into account the minimal and recommended functionality required to comply with the users requirements. Preliminary results from the report of the in-depth user assessments of annotation needs in the specific domain of botanists are shared with the attendees. Advances in the definition of a prototype are also shown.

Traditional information retrieval approaches deal with retrieving full-text document as a response to a user's query. However, applications that go beyond the "ten blue links" and make use of additional information to display and interact with search results are becoming increasingly popular and adopted by all major search engines. In addition, recent advances in text extraction allow for inferring semantic information over particular items present in textual documents. This talks presents how enhancing a document with structures derived from shallow parsing is able to convey a different user experience in search and browsing scenarios, and what challenges we face as a consequence.

Persistent Identifiers, Herbarium workshop at Kongsvold, September 1 to 4, 2014Dag Endresen
Implementation of persistent and globally unique identifiers for specimens held in natural history collections worldwide will open up new opportunities for referring to these physical resources in an interlinked digital context such as the Internet. Here, we will describe the approach for persistent identification of collection specimens developed and implemented at the Natural History Museum in Oslo (NHM-UiO) by the the Norwegian participant node to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF-Norway). The Norwegian university museums are invited to use our resolver service at "http://purl.org/gbifnorway/id/<uuid>" when publishing biodiversity data to GBIF. All occurrence records published through GBIF-Norway, with appropriate PURL-UUID identifiers mapped to the Darwin Core occurrenceID, will automatically be added to our resolver service and kept updated.

The traditional process of achieving metadata standards has failed, and I know what I’m talking about because of Dublin Core, BagIt, Z39.50, URLs, and ARKs.
We must think outside the box or we will keep failing. YAMZ (Yet Another Metadata Zoo) is not a standard. Instead it is a dictionary of terms, some fixed and others still evolving, that are meant to be selectively referenced by future standards. Terms are otherwise decoupled from standards that reference them. Each term is a kind of nano-specification with a unique persistent identifier that tracks the term from evolving to mature to deprecated.

Every term has a unique persistent identifier (PID)
The scheme of an identifier determines almost nothing about its behavior compared to a resolver that's ready to map it to various services. When resolver infrastructure is shared across schemes instead of siloed, all schemes benefit. With suitable prefixing dozens of well-known, so-called non-actionable schemes can become available from a single unified base URL. The idealized resolver would adopt a fully open infrastructure, and support all schemes and the best features from modern resolvers -- deduplication, content negotiation, link checking, inflections, suffix passthrough, etc.
A huge amount of incredibly diverse research data remains beyond the reach of internet search engines, peer review processes, and systematic cataloging. The ability by consumers to annotate data is an important mitigation, harnessing "the crowd" to make it easier for everyone to discover and re-use data.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
