CONCRETE & MATERIALS TESTING CERTIFICATIONS:
American Concrete Institute Concrete Strength Testing Technician Certification - 1/2015
American Concrete Institute Concrete Field Testing Technician Certification - 5/2014
Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Materials Testing Certification Soils and
Aggregate, Concrete and Asphalt Units - 9/2012
SUMMARY: I am currently the most prolific concrete field and lab technician on the island of
Maui. I have personally managed all concrete testing operations for the Kaanapali Ocean Resort -
Westin Nanea a 390 unit timeshare being built in Lahaina, Maui. I am single-handedly
responsible for casting over 640 concrete samples and providing over 400 compressive test
results for concrete and grout in just 4 months. I also provided all the reporting and record
keeping for these tests. I have maintained this level of quality with no missed days and despite a
30 mile distance between field and laboratory operations. In 2014, while working for Hawaiian
Cement-Maui, I was responsible for a 71% of concrete compressive test samples and field test
results over the previous year. I provided training to help other technicians pass their ACI Field
Technician Level 1 exam. In 2015, I served as a test proctor with the Cement & Concrete
Products Industry of Hawaii for the ACI Field Technician Level 1 practical portions of the exam
in Honolulu.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Mid Pacific Testing & Inspections –Kaanapali Ocean Resort Lot #3
April 2015 to present - Concrete Field & Laboratory Manager
Duties: Provide concrete field sampling & testing to include casting cylinders, measuring
temperature and slump. Operate laboratory and conduct concrete compressive strength testing
according to ASTM standards. Provide accurate and timely reporting of field and lab results to
stakeholders and project managers. Maintain a tracking system of all test results.
Highlights: I physically set up and maintained the laboratory from project start, including the
handling of all logistics including arranging test equipment to be calibrated. I facilitated a
working agreement between contractor, concrete supplier and testing agency to provide and share
testing resources, results and historical data. I have maintained operations despite very limited
resources. I have also maintained operations with a very low overhead by employing cost saving
methods. I am currently shadowing the Special Inspector in areas of: reinforced concrete and
structural masonry.
Hawaiian Cement Maui Division – Puunene Quarry
10/2013 to 4/2015 – Quality Control Technician
Duties: Conduct gradation and sand equivalency tests on all aggregates and base materials made
at two different quarries. Record and report results. Monitor trends and communicate this to the
quarry plant manager so that adjustments can be made if necessary to keep aggregates within
company specifications. Conduct slump, air content (pressure and volumetric) and temperature
tests on all concrete mixes. Provide testing services at Ready-mix plant and on jobsites. Make
concrete cylinder strength test samples for all concrete mixes. Record and report results.
2. Monitor trends and communicate this to the ready-mix plant manager so that adjustments can be
made to make the mix stronger or save materials and costs. Calculate, set timing, prepare and
hand dose the correct amount of admixture chemicals for each job load size. Use admixture
chemicals such as: glenium (superplasticizer), cortec (migrating corrosion inhibiter), rheocell
(improves yield, workability, reduced segregation), delvo (retarder), pozzolith, (improved
workability, reduced segregation). Calculate and prepare fibers and silica fume to be added to
custom concrete mixes. Maintain all fiber and powder inventories.
Hightlights: I provided gradations and sand equivalency test results for nearly every day the
quarries were operating in 2014. I kept all chemicals, fibers and materials responsible for stocked
and made available to include hand dosing trucks, calculating glenium amounts per cubic yard
and inputting that information into the “tracking and scheduling” system, manually feeding the
ready mix plant. I did not allow any lapse in availability of any of these critical items in 2014.
(Silica Fume, Glenium, Cortec, CNI, Helix etc.) I conducted and recorded unit weight
measurements for all aggregates, sand and soils at Puunene and Waikapu quarries to estimate
dollar value of each stockpile in just 3 days. I created and maintained an on-going “driver slump
prediction and accuracy report” to track each ready-mix driver’s competency in determining the
slump of their load. I participated as a member of the safety committee which remedied multiple
safety problems including several electrical hazards at the Honokawai plant. I maintained perfect
attendance and a perfect safety record while employed with Hawaiian Cement.
