THE COACHELLA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL
in Indio, Calif., drew 80,000 fans to the Palm Springs
desert over the weekend. A slew of fashion parties
kept everyone cool and quenched during the day, while
scorching rays, an eerie sandstorm and a small army of
bands at the Empire Polo Club provided plenty to take in.
Kicking things off on Friday, BGBG Max Azria and
Benefit Cosmetics joined forces for a glorified hair
and makeup session at a private estate where starlets
like Lucy Hale primped in public. A collective of brands,
including Forever 21, Revolve and Swatch, gathered at
the Saguaro Hotel in Palm Springs for the aptly named
Weekender three-day party, where Juliette Lewis, Giovanni
Ribisi and Alexander Wang made the scene. Later that night,
Diesel and Edun celebrated their African-inspired
denim collection at Studio Africa in Indio Valley with
Rolling Stone, drawing guests such as Emma Roberts,
Fabrizio Moretti and Teresa Palmer. Before Solange took the
stage to play a DJ set, Bono joined Baloji for an impromptu
performance. Stephen Dorff and John Legend also kicked
back to enjoy the music.
“I was at the festival all day” said late arrival Jessica
Paré. “We saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Passion Pit, Band of
Horses…a lot of bands. We just did all of it.”
The next day, at a private estate in Thermal, Calif.,
Lacoste’s pool party was the first stop (at noon) for Katy
Perry, Chris Pine, Alessandra Ambrosio and Rita Ora. Partygoers
enjoyed poolside manis and pedis, noshed from gourmet
food trucks parked by a man-made lake and played a round
of boccie on the lawn. Pine shielded himself from the sun in
a cabana, while sucking on a Patron-infused Popsicle.
Also on Saturday, festival sponsor H&M hosted a pool
party at the Merv Griffin Estate where Santigold and The
Dough Rollers played for a crowd including AnnaSophia
Robb, Jason Wu, and couples Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson,
and Sophia Bush and Justin Chatwin. While none of the
celebrities actually submerged themselves into a pool,
there were plenty of scenesters who weren’t afraid to get
their hair wet.
On Sunday, House of Holland eyewear feted its latest
collection poolside at the Saguaro hotel. Agyness Deyn played
DJ for guests including Pixie Geldof and Nick Grimshaw. Henry
Holland was on the lookout for design inspiration: “I just
saw a girl walking around the pool with some impressive
eyewear who will probably spark some creative planning.”
Nearby, the Guess party at the Viceroy hotel featured
a more relaxed vibe. Between dancing to DJ Lindsay Luv
and Classixx and playing rounds of Ping-Pong, attendees
Ashley Benson, Riley Keough, Katharine McPhee and Chloë Sevigny
posed with water guns and other warm weather props.
“Phoenix killed it last night,” said Joe Jonas, who
came with brother Nick. “It’s my third year coming to
Coachella. I just really love the festival and checking out
the music.” For those who still aren’t partied out from
the festival, there is a replay next weekend.

FASHION SCOOPS
SCHIAPARELLI BOUND?: Could Marco Zanini
be headed to Schiaparelli? According
to sources, the designer might be on his
way to the storied brand, although the
exact nature of his role could not be
determined. Zanini, who cut his teeth at
Versace, is not new to helping rejuvenate
sleepy labels. After a two-year stint at
Halston, he was tapped to revive the
Rochas label in 2008. At Rochas, the
designer added a touch of quirkiness to
his offbeat retro classic style, indulging in
his penchant for luxurious and exclusive
fabrics. Zanini declined to comment on
the rumors. A Schiaparelli spokeswoman
could not be reached for comment.
Diego Della Valle, chairman and chief
executive officer of Tod’s Group,
acquired Schiaparelli in 2006, with
plans to relaunch it in mid-2013.

NEW OWNER: Sinv SpA now controls Piazza

Sempione, which last October filed a court
petition for restructuring with creditors.
In February, Piazza Sempione submitted
a restructuring plan, including a proposal
for renting and then selling the company to
Sinv, which have been accepted by both the
court and the creditors.
“The production entirely made in
Italy and the strong presence in the

U.S., along with the expansion into new
markets, are the elements we want to
exalt in order to start a new course
for the company,” said Sinv general
director and new Piazza Sempione chief
executive officer Sandra Spinacè.
Sinv, which produces and distributes
Love Moschino and See by Chloé
collections, is controlled by Sinv Holding
SpA. The latter also owns 30 percent of
Moschino and 40 percent of men’s ready-towear and accessories brand Luca Roda Srl.
Piazza Sempione was previously
controlled by Luxemburg-based SLPS
— a holding company including LVMH
Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton’s private
equity fund L Capital; the brand’s
founders Marisa Guerrizio and Roberto
Monti, and ceo Enrico Morra. — A.T.

PUNKY TOWN: Moda Operandi, the main

underwriter of the Costume Institute’s
“Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibition,
is doing its part to bring the punk look
back. On May 2, the site will begin
offering a limited-edition capsule
collection of Punk-inspired apparel,
accessories and objets d’art, including
special pieces from 12 designers and
brands exclusively created for the
site. These include T-shirts handstudded with spikes from Eddie Borgo;
a Givenchy chiffon and leather cape,

and two corseted Vivienne Westwood
tartan dresses. Rodarte, House of
Waris, Moschino, Prabal Gurung,
Thom Browne, Preen, Balmain, Dolce
& Gabbana and Ek Thongprasert also
made special pieces for the occasion.
Moda Operandi cofounder Lauren Santo
Domingo said the capsule will “offer women
the opportunity to capture the spirit of
punk with pieces that balance high fashion
and rebellion.” — MARC KARIMZADEH

of 1,000 solar lamps by
Kenyan engineer Evans
Wadongo, which will be on
display at Friedman Benda
gallery in Manhattan’s West
Chelsea neighborhood
Wednesday through Friday.
Wadongo first created
the MwangaBora lamp in
2004 as a safer alternative
to kerosene lamps more
typical to rural Africa.
The gallery will sell
the lamps to benefit the
Nairobi-based Sustainable
Development for All Kenya nonprofit
organization (Wadongo is executive
director and chairman). Proceeds from
the lamp sales will go towards a donation
of 10,000 lamps, which will be distributed
throughout Africa.
“Working with Evans Wadongo on
his solar lamp initiative, a project

that focuses on climate change
awareness, environment and economic
empowerment allowed me an opportunity
to utilize the influence that fashion and
art have in our culture today to create
awareness around something that is
about design and about sustainability,”
said Krakoff, who will celebrate the
project with a cocktail event at the gallery
Thursday evening. — M.K.

HEADING TO LONDON:
David Neville and Marcus
Wainwright will show their

men’s collection during
London Collections: Men
in June in lieu of their
usual runway show held
during New York Fashion
Week in September. Rag
& Bone was founded in
2002 in New York, where
Neville and Wainwright
live, but both are English
and their collections
are rooted in traditional
English tailoring.
“We felt strongly about
showing our spring-summer
2014 collection in our
hometown,” said Wainwright. “London
is important to us on several levels — it’s
where we opened our European flagship
store last summer — and with LC:M
gathering momentum each season, we feel
incredibly excited to be a part of it.”
Indeed, the Rag & Bone news comes
on the heels of Burberry’s announcement

Wadongo first created the MwangaBora lamp in 2004 as a safer alternative to kerosene lamps more typical to rural Africa. The gallery will sell the lamps to benefit the Nairobi-based Sustainable Development for All Kenya nonprofit organization (Wadongo is executive director and chairman). Proceeds from the lamp sales will go towards a donation of 10,000 lamps, which will be distributed throughout Africa. “Working with Evans Wadongo on his solar lamp initiative, a project that focuses on climate change awareness, environment and economic empowerment allowed me an opportunity to utilize the influence that fashion and art have in our culture today to create awareness around something that is about design and about sustainability,” said Krakoff, who will celebrate the project with a cocktail event at the gallery Thursday evening. — M.K.
