In this first of our series of visiting lectures, Debbie Holley, Professor of Learning Innovation at Bournemouth University challenges us to explore the boundaries of the digital, while still ensuring that our own digital health and wellbeing is protected, along with that of our students. Debbie will share examples of her work leading teams embedding creativity (online) through the disciplines, with considerations for the health and wellbeing for all. We will conclude the talk with a panel discussion about how we may like to take some of the ideas forward. The event will be recorded, and the slides shared. Debbie has requested that you bring along your SMART (internet connected) mobile phones, but emphasises this workshop is suitable for all. Dr Ben Goldsmith, from the Bournemouth University learning technology team, will join us to talk about what is possible at the panel!
Debbie is a National Teaching Fellow, a Principle Fellow of AdvanceHE and on the JISC student experience experts panel. She has research interests in digital competence frameworks, augmented reality, virtual reality and simulations.
Ben is a Learning Technologist at Bournemouth University and a Fellow of AdvanceHE. His research interests include digital and media literacy, the use of media and digital content and tools in secondary and tertiary education, and the engagement of critical theory with approaches to learning.

Effective digital literacy delivery incorporates both synchronous tools that enable real-time collaboration as well as asynchronous tools that allow flexible participation over time. Diversity and inclusion in digital literacy learning means providing equal opportunities and respect for all learners regardless of their backgrounds, so that everyone can participate in and benefit from digital skills development.

A systematic approach integrating digital citizenship across the curriculum is needed, along with support developing teacher skills and involving parents.

VDI Saves Tyler Schools
The Tyler Independent School District in Texas faced budget cuts that eliminated $10 million in funding while needing to replace thousands of outdated computers. Implementing a VDI solution using a Vblock system allowed the district to upgrade infrastructure at a much lower cost, saving over $1 million in capital expenditures. The new solution improved performance for students and teachers, provided operational savings of $1.7 million over 5 years through centralized administration, and is expected to save $2.7 million total over 5 years while improving the educational experience.

Critical Perspectives on ‘Openness’ in Higher Education
Twitter has been celebrated as a tool for professional learning. However many of the assertions about the benefits of Twitter for professional learning have been anecdotal proclamations rather than research-evidenced claims.
This presentation draws on findings from my EdD research, which explored how higher education professionals use Twitter for learning. A case study approach enabled in-depth exploration of how and why Twitter was used by professionals for learning about teaching-related practices. The research found that participants used Twitter in different ways: some peripherally participated on Twitter, while others participated at the centre of online-networked spaces.
These findings contradict commonly held views that open online spaces, such as Twitter, are inherently social. The research established that capacity to participate, feelings of confidence and vulnerability, and finding a sense of belonging online were contributing factors to participation or non-participation in such spaces.
These findings highlight the complexity of participating in online social spaces for learning. Thus, there are implications for those who advocate online social networks for learning. Critical thought and further discussion coupled with suitable supports are required if open online spaces are to be advocated and encouraged for learning in higher education contexts.
Wellbeing and responsibility: a new ethics for digital educators?

Humanizing Online Teaching and Learning

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Spark is the widely used ETL tool for processing, indexing and ingesting data to serving stack for search. Milvus is the production-ready open-source vector database. In this talk we will show how to use Spark to process unstructured data to extract vector representations, and push the vectors to Milvus vector database for search serving.
Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject.
We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup.
Further emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in developing XSLT, or schemas such as XSD and Schematron. We will address the techniques and strategies adopted to create prompts for generating code, explaining code, or refactoring the code, and the results achieved.
The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring.
The presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of AI usage in XML development, providing attendees with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions. Whether you’re at the early stages of adopting AI or considering integrating it in advanced XML development, this presentation will cover all levels of expertise.
By highlighting the potential advantages and challenges of integrating AI with XML development tools and languages, the presentation seeks to inspire thoughtful conversation around the future of XML development. We’ll not only delve into the technical aspects of AI-powered XML development but also discuss practical implications and possible future directions.
