Cascading Workshop of CIE English 1123- Professional Development for TeachersSara Niazi
This presentation is to cascade the entire content learnt at the professional development workshop held in Islamabad in the year 2016, conducted by the Principal Examiner at Cambridge, Helen Reed Bidder.
Categorization is a natural thinking skill. Our brains categorize and map everything we learn, so why not use this in teaching? The presentation will explain how to work with the categories from the earliest stages of learning and how to develop speaking and thinking skills using categories. You will learn effective ways of teaching to ask questions, describing and comparing objects.
1) The best way
The best way to learn a foreign language is to immerse yourself in the culture and live with native speakers, which is often expensive and time-consuming, if not downright impossible. So, the second best way is to simulate the situation as much as possible -- and this, YOU have control over. During regular academic quarters, you will be asked to complete mini projects that will expose you to Korean people, language and culture. You will also be asked to meet with at least one language exchange partner (native Korean speaker) to practice Korean twice a week. The UW Korean Language Program’s language course schedule is usually really packed so the role of language partners is crucial. When getting a language partner, find someone who attended or graduated from at least high school in Korea. Also, if you are finding someone through the UW English Language Program, try to get someone who is placed to a low level of English. To request a language partner, contact the English Language Program (206) 543-6242,

This workshop will be of transitional nature – we’ll be moving from theory to practice using the topics that have already been discussed. On the basis of topics “Food and Meals” and “Healthy Lifestyle” we will go through the already discussed techniques of effective teaching and develop our own ideas of how to deal with the topic.
Key points:
1) Quick revision of the techniques for effective teaching.
2) Teaching “Food” at elementary levels:
– groups of food and nutrients;
- cooking food;
- food staples – geographical reasons.
3) Teaching “Food” at intermediate levels:
- food as a part of healthy lifestyle;
- types of eaters and keys to success.
4) Thinking skills as a basis for lesson planning.

Student career concerns and aspirationsAnnie Abbott
Given the rising costs of higher education and a highly competitive job market, college students—and their parents—are thinking about their careers even as freshmen. Language departments often respond to that concern by promoting language learning and their courses as entrée into exciting careers. However, basic language courses rarely incorporate career-related content in a systematic way, and many instructors feel unprepared to teach about professions they have not been trained in themselves. It is possible to reconcile these different perspectives! We will share activities that introduce important professional content within exercises focusing on vocabulary, grammar and culture.
During the presentation we will share three types of activities that combine language acquisition and professional content: vocabulary listening comprehension, grammar with a focus on meaning, and cultural competence as an active skill.

Workshop 7 Teaching about Science and InventionsMaryna Tsehelska
Though technological developments are a topic of many discussions, it is not an easy task to teach about them. Science and Technology appear to be a topic as vast and boundless as modern life itself. So, to make teaching of them more effective, I suggest a couple of ideas, which are also the key points for the workshop:
1) Understanding how inventions are made and how they work. This may be a part of any topic that involves instruments (Dwelling, School, Films, Books, etc.) and where we may talk about enhancements.
2) Inventions from historical point of view – when they were made and how they work.
3) Development of language awareness and general world view while talking about inventions.
