The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established on January 1, 1995 as an extension of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) to oversee international trade. The WTO has 153 member countries and seeks to ensure trade flows freely, predictably and smoothly by settling trade disputes, supporting developing countries, and maintaining related databases and training programs. It is organized with a Ministerial Conference at the top level and councils on goods, services, and intellectual property to regulate agreements on agriculture, trade-related investment measures, and intellectual property rights.
