Observed annually in December
Aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and call for solidarity.
Patient safety focuses on preventing and reducing risks that happen to patients
during the provision of health care.
World Patient Safety Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns.
Each year a theme is selected to shed light on a priority area critical to patient
safety.

3. HISTORY
The World Patient Safety Day was established in May
2019, the 72nd World Health Assembly established the
day with the adoption of resolution WHA72.6 on ‘Global
action on patient safety.
The day builds on a series of successful annual Global
Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety, that started in
2016 in London.

4. PATIENT
SAFETY It is a discipline that emphasizes safety in health care through the prevention, reduction,
reporting, and analysis of error.
The frequency and magnitude of avoidable adverse events, often known as patient safety
incidents, was not well known until the 1990s
Recognizing that healthcare errors impact in every 10 patients around the world, the World
Health Organization calls patient safety an endemic concern.

5. THEME
This year, World Patient Safety Day 2021 is celebrated with the
theme “Safe maternal and new born care”
According to WHO, approximately 810 women die every day
from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.
In addition, around 6700 new-borns die every day
Considering the significant burden of risks and harm women and
newborns are exposed to due to unsafe care, the campaign is even
more important this year.

FACTS The occurrence of adverse events due to unsafe care is likely one of the 10 leading
causes of death and disability in the world.
In high-income countries, it is estimated that one in every 10 patients is harmed while
receiving hospital care. The harm can be caused by a range of adverse events, with
nearly 50% of them being preventable.
Each year, 134 million adverse events occur in hospitals in low and middle-income
countries, due to unsafe care, resulting in 2.6 million deaths.
Most detrimental errors are related to diagnosis, prescription and
the use of medicines.
