  2. Taylor Welcome everyone, today we're excited to share how we "demolished" our traditional library workshops at MSU and rebuilt them into a new, engaging 15-minute "pop-in" format. Who we are.
  3. Taylor Like many others, the MSU Library was struggling with low attendance at our standard 1-hour workshops. Plus prep time for each of these workshops combined with low attendance had us questioning how much to invest in this instructional area. We decided it was time to challenge the status quo and switch up our approach.

Jacquie We were facing some common challenges with our traditional workshops: Low turnout from students and faculty Repetitive workshop offerings that felt stale A general sense of being in an instructional rut, both for librarians and participants It was clear we needed to rethink our workshop format to better meet the needs of our community.
  5. Jacquie This short format matches students' attention spans and busy schedules. We moved away from long lectures and focused on hands-on activities they could apply right away Rather than tucking workshops away in a classroom, we offered them in a bustling first-floor area to increase foot traffic and awareness Librarians could quickly prepare workshops on trending topics or tools they were excited about, rather than being locked into a fixed schedule

  8. Taylor This new approach offered several benefits: See slide Overall, it breathed new life into our instructional program.
  9. Jacquie Of course, transitioning to this model wasn't without its challenges. We faced some hurdles around: See slide Not everyone was onboard with this idea. Some believed that workshops as a format weren’t worth investing in at all, other issues? However, enough were excited to experiment with instruction that we were able to move forward.
  10. Jacquie We have specific categories for you to think through, feel free to fill these out as we go along, and we’ll be using those answers an upcoming activity.
  11. Jacquie As I mentioned, one of the hallmarks of our pop-in workshops was offering them in a high-traffic area of the library. This could be: The main lobby or atrium Near the library's service desks Outside of a computer lab or other popular study spaces The key was choosing a location that would maximize visibility and foot traffic, rather than sequestering the workshops away. Getting the word out about our new pop-in workshops was crucial. Some of the tactics we used included: Eye-catching signage and digital displays around the library Promotion through the library's website, social media, and campus newsletters Outreach to faculty to encourage them to send students to relevant workshops Word-of-mouth promotion by librarians and staff We found a multi-pronged approach worked best to drive awareness and attendance.

Jacquie When selecting topics for our pop-in workshops, we focused on a few key criteria: Practical skills students could immediately apply, like Excel formatting or a feature within the Microsoft suite Awareness of valuable library resources and services, like Interlibrary Loan or special collections Fun, interactive activities like building a D&D character or exploring data visualization tools The goal was to provide bite-sized, engaging instruction on things our users really needed.

  16. Jacquie Transitioning to a pop-in workshop format breathed new life into our instructional program at MSU. By reducing the time commitment, increasing flexibility, and raising the visibility of our offerings, we were able to better engage our community and reignite librarian enthusiasm.
