This document announces a conference on "Body Weight Imbalances and Health: The Role of Nutrition and Food Industry" to be held on March 17th, 2016. The conference will focus on how nutrition, food ingredients, and the food industry can help maintain a proper body weight. It will present new scientific findings on body weight and new trends from industry research on nutritional ingredients and food products that affect satiety, metabolism and energy intake. Diet and lifestyle are major factors in body weight imbalances and related diseases, so the food industry can help consumers adopt healthier behaviors through innovative food products. This workshop focuses on the issue ofbody weight imbalances andexplores the role ofnutrition,ingredients
and food industry to help maintaining a proper body weight. The contributions will illustrate new scientific
findings about body weight and propose new trends by industry research on how to tackle the problem of
body weight imbalances with new nutritional ingredients and food products that, e.g., affect satiety,
metabolism and energy intake.
Diet and life style are among the most important factors in the imbalance of body weight and in the
development of related diseases that cause serious implications for the quality of life and the healthcare
systems. In Europe opposite trends are present: overweight and underweight.
Excessive amount of body fat is a health hazard, especially for the risk of certain diseases such as coronary
heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and some cancers. Obesity is today, according to the World Health
Organization, one of the most alarming public health problems and yet often overlooked. Child obesity is of
very high concern.
The opposite problem - but just as bad even though less common - is that of underweight especially in
elderly. In malnourished people, when fat is absent and not enough energy is introduced with the food, the
body starts dismantling its own muscles and internal organs. This compromises many metabolic and
endocrine functions.
The ingredients and food industry, in collaboration with the governments, can act as a key driver of new
behavioral patterns for consumers delivering food products with a preventive action against body weight
imbalances not only on niche markets but also as a significant component of main food markets.
