3. Campaign background
• Existing World Wide “anti-stigma” campaigns (Time to Change
England, See Me, Beyond Blue etc)
• Mental health stigma and discrimination focal point of large
Wales based Mental Health Charities
• Opportunity to 2011 to bids for a Wales based campaign
• Time to Change Wales “born” in late 2011

5. What is Time to Change Wales?
• Public attitude campaign to break down myths, stereotypes and
thus combat stigma and discrimination associated with mental
health
• Messaging aimed at educating, informing and normalising
conversations around mental health
• Launched in 2012 (funded out until Dec 2017)
• Together for Mental Health Delivery Plan (Outcome 7)
• Places emphasis on lived experience leadership

6. Mental health is everyone`s business
• We all have mental health – it moves up and down a spectrum
• 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any
one year
• Mental health is indiscriminate – it can (and does) affect anyone
• By 2020, WHO have earmarked depression as the second most
common cause of ill health worldwide (particularly in the
developed world)

• Mental health is surrounded by stigma, prejudice and
discrimination

• 9 out of 10 of those who experience mental health problems say
they face stigma and discrimination - Stigma can be worse than
the symptoms themselves

9. What impact does Stigma have?
• Is often a greater barrier than the actual condition (self stigma)
• Stops individuals seeking timely help (and thus impacts on
recovery)
• People become isolated & excluded from everyday activities
• Harder to find and maintain employment

11. What do good partnerships need?
• Need a shared vision and goal (the so what?)
• Clear responsibilities
• Require mutual trust and respect
• Effective communications
• Effective partnership agreements
• Effective delegation across the partnerships
• Strong execution
• Simply systems
• Ability to share opportunities and identify quick wins
• Effective feedback loop (so what's the impact)

• Devil is always in the detail – takes time and effort to make any
partnership work
