Over 75% of novice nurses experienced or witnessed workplace bullying in their first nursing job. In a follow up study 18 months later, 60% of those nurses identified themselves as targets of workplace bullying. Workplace bullying behaviors create stress and anxiety in nurses that are more vulnerable, and as bullying increases so do stress and anxiety symptoms which can lead to post traumatic stress disorder. Unaddressed bullying that causes an employee to leave can cost healthcare organizations between $22,000-$64,000 per replacement, posing a significant financial burden. If a large facility with 1,000 nurses lost 40% of staff yearly due to bullying, estimated replacement costs would be $8.8-25.6 million.
