The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act divided England and Wales into Poor Law Unions, each run by a locally elected Board of Guardians and funded by local poor rates. People entered workhouses because they were too poor, old, ill, or pregnant to support themselves. Life in the workhouse was harsh - inmates were separated by age and sex, uniforms were basic, punishments were used, and the daily routine focused on work and a meager diet. Many became long-term residents, and those who died received a basic burial paid for by the workhouse if family did not claim the body.

Victorians
The Victorian Period lasted from 1837 to 1901 under Queen Victoria's rule. Britain became the most powerful country through its vast global empire. Rapid industrialization and population growth led to huge demands for resources and changes in how people lived and worked, including mass migration to cities. Living standards depended greatly on social class, as the poor faced overcrowding, disease, and child labor in cities and factories while the rich lived comfortably.
Tudor Poor
The Tudor government took two approaches to dealing with the poor - harsh punishments to deter vagrancy and begging, and making parishes responsible for their own poor. Parishes were required to appoint beadles to identify the truly poor and expel vagabonds, and could set up workhouses to provide basic shelter and food in exchange for work. This system was intended to replace support previously provided by monasteries and lasted until 1834.
