What: went to the principal because of smoking in the bathroom.
Where: in a New Jersey high school.
When: 1980.
What happened: The principal opened the girl’s purse. He found marijuana and a
paper with names of people who owed her money for marijuana. The principal
called the girl’s parents and the police.
What happened next: The parents complained: the principal broke her Fourth
Amendment privacy rights.
