Volunteering is good, right? Well, yes! But are some forms of volunteering better than others? Is there such thing as bad volunteering? And who does things better, staff or volunteers?
Whether it’s fundraising, human resources or operations, we make tactical decisions all the time. But making tactical volunteering choices feels more alien to us. Join us to consider why that is, if you’ve got the right people doing the right stuff, and whether your operating model is working for you

Creating entrepreneurial programs that connect with entrepreneurs and the local community and meet the goals and objectives of community colleges is a fine art. More and more leaders are recognising that how to 'do digital' well is a critical strategic and leadership question. In this session, leaders will share how they have successfully transformed their organisations and services.
We will draw out lessons for organisational structure, culture, skills, governance and planning, to help you take practical next steps.
If you are already convinced that 'digital' is important, and now want to hear about how other leaders have responded, this session is for you.
While an effective board has always been important, it is especially essential in periods of economic turbulence. Board members who offer independent insights from their own experience, and provide access to external resources are critical to management when making decisions key to organizational viability. Building and sustaining a high performance board requires an investment of time, the right leadership and a thoughtful strategy. It is important to align the board’s role and its members’ expectations with the nonprofit’s stage of organizational development. Without proper stewardship, tension can arise when what an organization needs from its board transcends members’ understanding of their role .

This session will focus on how taking a holistic systems approach to healthcare can be integrated with a systems approach to community and economic development to help transform communities and regions for improving well-being. This includes building capacities for education, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and innovation through adaptive planning and doing. Our approach to the session will be based on our work as collaborators with Communities of the Future and our respective roles and experience in healthcare and economic development. The session will be designed to present core concepts and context, answer questions, and engage participants in collaborative exercise. We will provide specific examples of how healthcare and economic and community well-being are highly connected in rural areas and what can be done through an integrated systems approach to improve community outcomes. We will draw from our collective research and experience in healthcare and economic development.
There is a growing consensus across the public and social sectors that people who use services and carers should have greater involvement in how they are designed and delivered. We have seen this reflected in both legislation and government policy, such as the Care Act 2014 and the Civil Society Strategy.
Coproduction, where people who use services work in equal partnership with professionals to achieve shared goals, can be an empowering experience for people who have often been locked out of decisions that affect their lives. It can also help us to ensure that services effectively build on people’s strengths to meet both needs and aspirations.
In this session we will explore practical experiences of supporting service user involvement in practice, and seek to answer the following questions:
What is coproduction and why it is important for organisations delivering services?
How do we know when we are doing it well?
What can charities do to improve their practice?
What strategies can we use to overcome barriers to involving people with lived experience and expertise?
How can we develop cultures that are risk aware rather than risk averse?
This session will be of interest to delegates involved in public service delivery, but the lessons learnt can apply to any type of service provision.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
