Melissa Balmer launched the original Women on Bikes SoCal program in September of 2011 with the goals of 1) utilizing the internet, social media, and captivating original images to welcome women and girls into all types of bicycling and 2) increase the number of female bicycle education instructors in underserved communities in the L.A. region. The www.womenonbikessocal.org website hit the #1 Google ranking for the term “Women on Bikes” within the first six months of existing. In November of 2012 Women on Bikes SoCal successfully raised funds to host 9 women as scholarship recipients for the first “all female” LCI training in the nation, and in May of this year hosted the 10th female to receive the scholarship. This has inspired other “female only” LCI trainings around the country. Our first fundraising effort for our new initiative is “The Pedal Love Project” in November of 2013 will raise funds to complete our new www.pedallove.org website, complete our first “Pedal Love Project” video and host the first in our series of “Active Living Plugged In” new media leadership trainings to create 100 charismatic and well informed “Spokespeople” for strategic media and public relations outreach across California.
This image is of our creative team member Machiko Yasuda who writes the “Critical Sass” blog column. The image is by Juan Carlos at the most recent CicLAvia in Los Angeles. Machiko is one of the ten recipients of our original Women on Bikes SoCal scholarships to become a certified bicycle education instructor via the League of American Bicyclist’s program.
As an initiative of the California Bicycle Coalition we are focusing on two areas of their strategic plan to help triple bicycling in California within 2020. The first is creating a strategic approach to both media and public relations by harnessing the power of personally engaging storytelling to catalyze the story of California’s blooming bike culture AND elevate the voice and position of women in bicycle advocacy across the state and nation. The second is to support and raise awareness of the importance of bicycle specific infrastructure such as protected bike lanes to help women and children feel safe and secure riding bikes.
Women on Bikes California Editor/Initiative Director Melissa Balmer by photographer Lisa Beth Anderson. Melissa served on the original Women Bike advisory board and now focuses on its Marketing & Media committee work. She served as the “Summit Coordinator” for the November 2013 “California by Bike” summit. To grow the bike movement we need to appreciate how far we’ve already come, and now moving forward invite the top creative and innovative talent in California interested in the bike conversation to engage with us in collaboration. Imagine if we had the best and the brightest in technology, tourism, entertainment and design collaborating with us? Imagine the impact we could have in engaging the hearts and minds of California’s to a life by bike and measurably decrease the sedentary disease pandemic if the joy and opportunities of bicycling were shared far and wide regularly to not only our data base but via all media channels?
This is Allan Crawford’s beautiful image of a young model in the “Vintage Bike + Fashion Show” at BikeFest in Long Beach in May 2013 hosted by the Downtown Long Beach Business Association. Melissa Balmer coordinated both the fashion show and a vintage bike contest that drew contestants from all over Southern California.

This is Women on Bikes/Pedal Love creative team member Charis Hill of Sacramento where she works for the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. Charis is our newest creative team member and writes our “Movement is Crucial” blog column. Charis deals with a rare and extremely challenging auto-immune disorder, a severe form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis – so movement is even more crucial to her than for most. She has to keep moving literally to be able to keep moving. Women on Bikes California is very proud of the success we’ve had engaging the Millennial voice to share the joys and benefits of life by bike. Charis is a very talented and passionate voice that much more will be heard from. Image by Allan Crawford
Shown in this image is Shelby Sanchez by Lisa Beth Anderson. Shelby is our “Visionary Cargo Bike Mom” for Women on Bikes California/Pedal Love. A native of Long Beach she set out to find an affordable cargo bike for her two young daughters about four months ago and found this one online. As a single mom and marketing entrepreneur she relishes being about to get around Long Beach by bike rather than car with her two young daughters so they can enjoy more quality time together.
Professional triathlete Jennifer Tetrick is originally from central California from a family famous for its passion for the bike. New to bike advocacy she brings the skills of a communications specialist to her “Athletic by Bike” blog column for us as well as her interest in all forms of bicycling – this this more “fashion” photo shoot we did with her this past summer in Belmont Shore with photographer Lisa Beth Anderson.
Show above is the dynamic Executive Director of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition Renee Rivera from a recent photo shoot with Lisa Beth Anderson for the California by Bike summit and Women on Bikes California/PedalLove.org. Although Renee doesn’t yet have a Director of Communications for her organization (though we know she will soon) she makes yearly strategic goals for media placement and hits them. She writes a regular column on bicycling in the East Bay for the San Francisco Chronicle which is seen in both the online and print edition – and has confirmed that it has broadened the EBBC’s reach and engagement.
Kellie Morris is our “We All Ride Bikes” blog columnist and the 10th woman who received a scholarship to become a certified bicycle education instructor via the League of American Bicyclist’s program. With a background as an IT professional with extensive public speaking and presentation experience Kellie has quickly become a favorite instructor. She worked with us to hone our short, two-hour, completely hands on “Street Savvy” adult bicycle education program which debuted this past summer. Image on this and the following slide by Lisa Beth Anderson.
Bernard Serrano is an unofficial bike ambassador for Long Beach but is one of our most popular and visual ones. The co-founder of the Cyclone Coaster vintage club he hosts one of the largest monthly vintage bike rides in the country. Bernard can be seen daily riding around Long Beach’s hot spots in complete vintage attire aboard one of his 100+ vintage bikes. He’s shown here with one of his swing dance partners Kitty Wyman in a promotional image for the May 2013 “Vintage Bike Events” at BikeFest by the Downtown Long Beach Business Associates. Jenna Burton of Red, Bike & Green Oakland (and it’s new chapters across the country) is one of the rising stars of bicycle advocacy. She gave a very moving talk at November 2013 “California by Bike” summit using gorgeous emotionally engaging images of the growing black bike culture in Oakland she’s helped to pull together and organize. She’ll be featured in an upcoming interview on PedalLove.org. Image by Lisa Beth Anderson. Jenna is the perfect example of the type of person we’re seeking to train in new media skills – by which we mean being articulate and powerfully effective whether it’s speaking publicly, on video, in interviews including television and radio, and the broad social media spectrum. Through these trainings we’ll also be building the California Bicycle Coalition’s strategy for media outreach across the state.
Meet successfully interior designer JoenGarnica of Long Beach. She exemplifies the talented young professional choosing our urban centers to live work and play. The bi-lingual Garnica will host our upcoming “Adventures by Bike” videos for PedalLove.org. The first two “Active Living Plugged In” new media leadership trainings are slated for Long Beach in February of 2014 and Silicon Valley in April of 2014. Our goal is to host 4-5 across the state by the end of the year.
This is photographer Lisa Beth Anderson’s recent self portrait. Lisa is not only gifted in photography but a writer as well, and now becoming a videographer. She understands well the roll of advocacy to create positive systemic change. Lisa lives a car light lifestyle in Long Beach but is a world traveler for her storytelling. We are indebted to her for her generosity with her talent – our Pedal Love Project creative seed fundraising campaign will help pay for Lisa’s time (which she’s donated so far) and other creatives who have been so dedicated in donating their time and talent to us.
Shown above is Allan Crawford who has worked from the beginning with Women on Bikes SoCal. Originally a passionate photographer for both professional and amateur cycling events, he gamely threw his hat in the ring to take “lifestyle” images for us – and the results put us on the map. Our very first photoshoot with Council Member SujaLowenthal led to the inside back cover for her in Momentum Magazine, our March 2012 photo shoot ended up as Momentum’s July 2012 cover. Pictures really do speak a thousand words – but we need to understand the right type of imagery to engage a new audience. We need to be inspired by the best. We need to look at the covers of the most successful magazines, top ads, experts in the ad world and reports such as the new Green Lane Project survey to understand the difference between what long term and confident cyclists and more casual bicyclists – and people who just like to ride bikes – want to see and hear.
Maria Sipin is another of our Millennial superstars at Women on Bikes California/PedalLove.org. She is one of our LCI scholarship recipients and like Kellie Morris has taught quite a bit over the past summer and fall. Maria writes our “License to Ride” blog column. She is a social media specialist and will be working with us to host several webinars in 2014. Maria collaborates with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles on the challenge health issues at risk youth are faced with. Image by Michael Herrera at Public Bikes in San Francisco.

Is what we’re saying music to your ears? We’d love to hear from you wobsocal@gmail.com.
As of November 11, 2013 we’ve raised $4,300of the $10,000 we’re looking to raise in creative seed funding to complete our website at www.PedalLove.org, complete our first Pedal Love Project video, and organize our first of the “Active Living Plugged In” new media workshop in Feb 2014 in Long Beach.
Can you help us spread the word and make sure this campaign is a success?
