Most Challenging Aspect of
DevOps Transformation
Changing the culture!
▪ How people work together
▪ How each person views their role
▪ The relationships between them and
others in the application delivery
pipeline within the org
6. What is the key to unlocking the DevOps Culture?
There are actually six of them!
7. 7
KEY ONE: Winning at DevOps Requires the
Entire Organization
Successful DevOps transformation requires everyone
▪ Get executive leadership and sponsorship — it is essential
for a clear vision and understanding expectations
▪ For example, some customers have developed a Center of
Excellence (COE) to onboard new application teams
▪ Create a process for people to enter the COE, learn the
necessary skills, and take them back to the organization
8. 8
KEY TWO: Application Delivery Pipeline Modernization: Leave
No Person Behind
▪ Don’t just modernize application code — modernize the skill set of
everyone on the application delivery team
▪ You don’t need different people — You just need newer skill sets
▪ Focus on updating skills and knowledge for people allowing staff to
grow and change along with the applications and platforms
▪ Add new applications and software as your infrastructure evolves
9. 9
KEY THREE: Communicate What DevOps Changes Mean for
Everyone
▪ Keep an open channel of communication about
changes occurring — Leadership needs to convey to everyone
how their roles will be affected and where their teams will
fit going forward
▪ Schedule regular meetings to create the glue that holds the
DevOps transformation together
▪ Involve other stakeholders outside of IT (e.g. Marketing, HR,
Finance, etc.) —DevOps doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s a
company-wide affair
10. 10
KEY FOUR: People and Process Must be Supported
By Metrics
▪ Identify the right metrics —
Meaningful metrics allow you
to “see into” your processes
and determine whether your
pipeline is optimized to deliver
high-quality software
11. 11
KEY FIVE: DevOps Legacy: No App Left Behind
▪ Determine which applications will continue to require time
and resources to maintain, & standardize their release
processes for consistency and repeatability
▪ Since mainframes are of huge importance, marry them with
modern software delivery methods
▪ Invest in your staff so they are completely integrated into
the new delivery process
▪ Invest in the right tooling and APIs so that your mainframe
applications are integrated into the delivery pipeline
12. 12
KEY SIX: Celebrate Successes in Production
▪ Highlight individual contributors and successful teams —
Show what made the milestone a success, share lessons
learned, and talk about how challenges were overcome
▪ Share the business context of your wins —What will this
“DevOps success” enable customers to do that they couldn’t
do before
▪ Throw a huge celebration — Your team has worked hard,
and now it’s time to have fun and reinforce a collaborative
culture that gets everyone on the same page
13. 13
KEY SEVEN: Technology Can Help Improve Culture
▪ Tools help support culture too! Choose a toolset that
reinforces the process
▪ Use technology throughout the delivery pipeline —
this is crucial
▪ Take a complete view of each development pipeline,
and build a platform that supports all of your
development teams
14. 14
1. Involve the entire organization
2. Empower your team by allowing them to learn new skills
3. Communicate with every department
4. Develop metrics that optimize your people
and processes
5. Bring your legacy applications into the DevOps fold
6. Celebrate the wins
7. Unify tools and build a pipeline that supports
all the Dev teams
