Windows NT 3.1 was the first release of Microsoft's Windows NT operating system line. It was released in July 1993 with versions for desktop and server use. Unlike Windows 3.1, NT 3.1 was a 32-bit operating system written from scratch to be stable, secure and suitable for business use on networks and office applications. Development of NT began in 1988 with the goal of creating a successor to OS/2, but tensions with IBM led Microsoft to develop NT as a Windows clone instead.
