In 2005, a parcel of land at the center of the United Nations’
master plan area at Lumbini was granted to UTBF Nepal, an orga-
nization guided by Trungram Gyaltrul Rinpoche, for the construc-
tion of the Lumbini Udyana Mahachaitya. Rinpoche had a vision
for a non-sectarian teaching center that would serve everyone.

The Udyana Mahachaitya is a Unesco World Heritage site and
specifically represents friends and devotees of Buddhism whose
communities or countries are not represented on the land by
any other particular monastery. It promotes Buddha’s universal
message of peace for all people, and is a center for international
unity. As the Mahachaitya is a World Center for Peace and Unity,
hand prints of leaders of all the major Buddhist traditions will
be enshrined around the main hall.
The center is an innovative design blending ancient and contem-
porary styles. It has a unique architecture based on an ancient
stupa at the famous Nalanda University, and houses numerous
stylistic statues including the Thousand Buddhas—dedicated to the
patrons of this monument.
