Buddhism originated in northern India with Siddhartha Gotama, known as the Buddha, who was born in 563 BC and sought enlightenment. At age 29, he dedicated his life to finding the key to human happiness and eliminating suffering. For over 50 years, Buddha taught and traveled, establishing the foundations of Buddhism. He attained enlightenment and taught the principles of the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path until his death at age 80. Buddhism then spread from India to other parts of Asia, and today there are over 300 million Buddhists worldwide who follow the philosophy and teachings of Buddha.
