Taktsang Monastery is located on a high cliff in Paro, Bhutan. It was originally built in 1692 but was destroyed by fire in 1998 and has since been restored. The monastery is an important spiritual site because it is believed that Guru Rinpoche flew there on the back of a tigress, making it a sacred place for meditation. Monastic life at the monastery involves spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, exercise and martial arts, but recognizing that the lifestyle may not be for everyone. Buddhism helps followers pursue personal goals through discipline and following the eightfold path.
