Ecosystem at UNH
• UNH has a long history in sustainability, entrepreneurship, and
outreach to support its ‘land grant’ commitment to the NH
community.
• Most Social Enterprise programs currently housed in Carsey
School of Public Policy but work collaboratively with Paul
College of Business and other UNH departments on an
individual basis.
• Goal is to draw from the best across our University connecting
Social Innovation activities and making these assets explicit
and accessible to all.

Editor's Notes

  • #5 SMDP has trained more than 2000 practitioners from 100+ countries with programs in South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and New Hampshire Webinars cover a range of topics from ProPoor Value Chain Development, Savings Groups, undergraduate courses and internships in microenterprise to encourage young people.  Note:  My undergraduate course has been at full capacity the last two years - and we have had two people enter the field - Sid and Andrew the courses and trainings we run for adult practitioners here and in Africa the masters program which provides more intensive training and has served people working microfinance institutions (e.g. CARD) the project work and research that you are undertaking - e.g. with Fundacion Capital
  • #6 Alex Freid co-founded Trash 2 Treasure, a student-led project that reduced the waste generated at the end of the year by collecting usable goods and reselling them at a yard sale over move-in weekend. The program is now in its third year and has salvaged more than 100 tons of materials, recycled more than 2,000 electronics and donated more than five tons of food and clothing to local shelters. It also saved UNH more than $10,000 in disposal fees and raised more than $30,000 in program revenue that was reinvested into new sustainability efforts on campus, according to Freid. Following up that success, Freid has announced the formation of a nonprofit called PLAN: The Post-Landfill Action Network. He said it is a national expansion of Trash 2 Treasure and will help students develop similar programs on other campuses. Agua Inc. is an international water treatment technology company based in Boulder, CO, with offices in Spain and Kenya. Agua Inc. uses plant based biotechnology and innovative system design to naturally clean contaminated water sources and wastewater more effectively, more sustainably, and more affordably than conventional treatment technologies. In locations where Agua’s plants have been installed they have greatly reducing child mortality and cholera wherever our systems are present.
