Documenting Ferguson: Building a community digital repositoryChris Freeland
The August 2014 shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, along with other recent police-involved shootings around the country have inspired demonstrations, conversation, debate and calls for systemic change in our society. Soon after Brown’s shooting, Washington University Libraries and other St. Louis cultural heritage institutions established a repository to document events in or inspired by Ferguson. Appropriately named Documenting Ferguson, this community-sourced open repository now has more than 1,500 files of digital photographs, video recordings and other media contributed from all over the country. These are viewable online at http://digital.wustl.edu/ferguson. Video of this talk available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6whGNsesYA.
Linked data for knowledge curation in humanities researchEnrico Daga
The identification and cataloguing of documentary evidence is an important part of empirical research in the humanities.
An increasing number of recent initiatives in the digital humanities have as a primary objective the curation of collections of digital artefacts augmented with fine-grained metadata, for example, mentioning the entities and their relations, often adopting the "Linked Data" paradigm. This talk is focused on exploring the potential of Linked Data to support humanities scholars in identifying, collecting, and curating documentary evidence. First, I will introduce the basic notions around Linked Data and place its emergence in the tradition of Knowledge Representation, an area of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Second, I will show how Linked Data and AI techniques have been successfully applied in the Listening Experience Database project to support the retrieval and curation of documentary evidence. Finally, I will conclude the presentation by discussing the potential (and challenges) of adopting a "knowledge extraction" paradigm to automate the identification and cataloguing of metadata about documentary evidence in texts.

The lymphangiogenic growth factors VEGF-C and VEGF-D, Part 1: Fundamentals an...belatoth666
VEGF-C and VEGF-D are the two central signaling molecules that stimulate the development and the growth of lymphatic system. Both belong to the VEGF protein family which plays important roles in the growth of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and lymphatic vessels (lymphangiogenesis). In mammals the VEGF family comprises five members: VEGF, PlGF, VEGF-B, VEGF-C and VEGF-D. The family was named after its first discovered member VEGF (“Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor”). VEGF-C and VEGF-D form functionally and structurally a subgroup within this family. They differ from the other VEGFs by their peculiar biosynthesis: they are produced as inactive precursors and need to be activated by proteolytic removal of their long N- and C-terminal propeptides. Unlike the other VEGFs, VEGF-C and VEGF-D are direct stimulators of lymphatic growth. They exert their lymphangiogenic function via VEGF receptor-3, which is expressed in the adult organism almost exclusively on lymphatic endothelial cells. In this review we give an overview of the VEGF protein family and their receptors with the emphasis on the lymphangiogenic VEGF-C and VEGF-D, and we discuss their biosynthesis and their role in embryonic lymphangiogenesis.

Tools and technology to support rich community heritageAlan Dix
Paper presented at British HCI Conference (BHCI2022), Keele, UK. 11-13 July 2022.
https://www.alandix.com/academic/papers/BHCI2022-community/
This paper explores ways in which scholarly skill and expertise might be embodied in tools and sustainable practices that enable communities to create and manage their own digital archives. We focus particularly on tools and practices related to the recording and annotation of digitised materials. The paper is based on co-production practice in two very different kinds of community. Although the communities are different we find that tools designed specifically for one are valuable for others, thus offering the promise of general tools to support community-centred digitisation and potentially also traditional archival practice.
Keynote talk for the Baltic Audiovisual Archival Council conference 2018 - 7-9 November in Tallinn, Estonia
http://www.baacouncil.org/cnf-2018
Presentation description:
Since the mid-2000s, cultural institutions around the world have worked together with Wikimedia volunteers in hundreds of collaboration projects. In these GLAM-Wiki projects, cultural organizations make their collections and specialized knowledge more widely accessible via the free encyclopedia Wikipedia and the free media repository Wikimedia Commons. In the past five years, Wikidata (Wikimedia's free, multilingual knowledge base) has gained a lot of influence in this area as well. As a very accessible and re-usable structured data and semantic web project, it has become a popular instrument for cultural institutions to publish collections as Linked Open Data, obtain multilingual data, place their collections in a much broader context, and enrich their collections with crowdsourced metadata. In 2017-19, Wikimedia Commons is also enhanced with structured data from Wikidata, with much improved APIs that make more smooth collaboration in GLAM-Wiki projects possible.
This keynote presentation provides a short overview of GLAM-Wiki collaborations and their impact, with special attention for the potential and use of Linked Open Data via Wikidata and via structured data on Wikimedia Commons. It includes examples of GLAM-Wiki projects by audiovisual archives and collections around the world.

It used to be that if you wanted information or answers to questions, you went to a library. In an era of increased reliance on major network hubs, information seekers increasingly turn to the web for answers. Therefore it is vital that libraries and archives ensure that their collections, or information about their collections, are easily discoverable on the open web. As the 6th most accessed website globally, Wikipedia is a natural place for cultural heritage institutions to expose their collections.
Wikipedia articles receive a lot of web love: they are highly ranked by search engines; snippets from pages are incorporated into Google’s Knowledge Graph, and are pulled in by services like Facebook, filling in missing content. How can libraries and archives mesh with Wikipedia? This session will detail how OCLC Research, Smithsonian Institution, and others are connecting researchers to unique materials through Wikipedia, put a spotlight on the special role library data can play in Wikipedia, examine how Wikipedia data may be useful to libraries and scholarly institutions, introduce Wikipedia’s GLAM-Wiki initiative, and talk about ways that information professionals can work collaboratively with the World’s Largest Free Encyclopedia.

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex ProofsAlex Pruden
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
