Privacy, Transparency and Trust in a Digital Worldbetterplace lab
Data privacy in the social sector – Who cares? What about?
Data has become ubiquitous. The world is rapidly digitising, and in our professional and private lives, more and more of our activities leave behind a trail of data.
For the social sector this means great opportunities – in the 2013 Trendreport we looked at the uses of "Big Data for Good". But the risks of data mining are also coming into sharper focus, not least since the Wikileaks revelations in 2013. It's clear that in the next few years, those working in the social sector all over the world will have to give a lot of thought to issues of data privacy and transparency.
What's less clear is what they think about these issues today. Does the need to protect beneficiaries' data even occur to an NGO in Brazil? How does a German foundation understand "transparency", and how does this differ from a Chinese foundation? Do Indonesian activists worry more about government surveillance or corporate data mining?
This 40-page report, produced by the betterplace lab and enabled by Mozilla, is based on research conducted during Lab Around the World in China, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Germany. There we conducted interviews with people working in the social sector about their attitudes and behaviour around matters of data privacy, transparency and trust.

Going Luddite is not really an option but we would still like to understand how technology is intruding into spaces that were previously off limits.

Making Decisions in a World Awash in Data: We’re going to need a different bo...Micah Altman
In his abstract, Scriffignano summarizes as follows:
l explore some of the ways in which the massive availability of data is changing and the types of questions we must ask in the context of making business decisions. Truth be told, nearly all organizations struggle to make sense out of the mounting data already within the enterprise. At the same time, businesses, individuals, and governments continue to try to outpace one another, often in ways that are informed by newly-available data and technology, but just as often using that data and technology in alarmingly inappropriate or incomplete ways. Multiple “solutions” exist to take data that is poorly understood, promising to derive meaning that is often transient at best. A tremendous amount of “dark” innovation continues in the space of fraud and other bad behavior (e.g. cyber crime, cyber terrorism), highlighting that there are very real risks to taking a fast-follower strategy in making sense out of the ever-increasing amount of data available. Tools and technologies can be very helpful or, as Scriffignano puts it, “they can accelerate the speed with which we hit the wall.” Drawing on unstructured, highly dynamic sources of data, fascinating inference can be derived if we ask the right questions (and maybe use a bit of different math!). This session will cover three main themes: The new normal (how the data around us continues to change), how are we reacting (bringing data science into the room), and the path ahead (creating a mindset in the organization that evolves). Ultimately, what we learn is governed as much by the data available as by the questions we ask. This talk, both relevant and occasionally irreverent, will explore some of the new ways data is being used to expose risk and opportunity and the skills we need to take advantage of a world awash in data.

Feed Forward Stories: towards open research and policy making for better publ...Kennisland
Feed Forward Stories: connecting research, policy and practice
The boy who got lost in debts and piles of papers while lacking a postal address to start his debt cancellation procedure, and thus his new life. The policy maker who has good connections but lacks the numbers and stories to take grounded action. The youth professional who bounces back and forth between providing what the boy needs, and what the bureaucratic rules and laws of civic administrator offices ask. The academic who wants to provide meaningful insights but is stuck with an academic ‘publish or perish’ system. All of these people live in one city, but their stories are disconnected. However they all want the same: better lives for citizens. Feed Forward Stories is an inclusive research methodology that connects stories of citizens and stories of people operating in systems (ie. schools, social and public services, municipality) to start new actions. In this talk Marlieke Kieboom (Kennisland) introduces the vision, the work principles and the methodology behind Feed Forward Stories.

Lab Matters: Opening up Social Laboratories Kennisland
Social innovation labs are the latest vehicles for systemic change – for disrupting the way our cities, our schools, our welfare programs, even our economic systems run. But how do they really work? It is time to get beyond the hype and properly probe into the practices and underlying theories of social innovation laboratories. To make our assumptions explicit about how labs prompt systemic change. To critique its logic. To ultimately learn how labs could lead to better functioning systems. Which enable people to live ‘better’ lives, both now and in the future.
To make a first step in this learning curve, Kennisland and Hivos (with the support of the SIX network) hosted Lab2: a two-day lab on social innovation labs from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Oceania and Asia. This presentation shares the outcomes and ideas on how to move forward.

Unlocking the Black Box:
How does transparency work?

It is a cold December evening when we

Our 40-member crew arrived just in time

time on transparency!
IS TRANSPARENCY A WICKED STRATEGY?
In the session on Greece transparency was
mentioned as a potential innovative
strategy. The assumption was that by
making (the movements of) information
more transparent and accessible, we might
be able to move away from the dynamics
of wicked problems. One group for
example developed ‘Greeky Leaks’, an
initiative to share and exchange skills and
knowledge on local coping strategies.
Anno 2013 there is indeed a clear trend to
more openness.
