- NOTES: IIED promotes sustainable development, linking local priorities to global challenges We are based in the UK, with central offices in London and Edinburgh We have around 120 staff (estimated in Feb 2015) We were founded in 1971 by economist Barbara Ward, who forged the concept and cause of sustainable development
- NOTES: We want to help build a fairer and more sustainable world. There are big challenges: global economic growth bypasses billions of poor people; rising demand is putting pressure on land, water, biodiversity, energy and food; and governance systems for climate, resource rights and sustainable development too easily ignore less powerful people’s knowledge and needs. Working with our partners, we try to change this

- NOTES: From 2014-19, our core areas of research will enrich four high-profile change initiatives aimed at shifting policy and practice towards more equitable and sustainable development A summary of each initiative: International engagement - ensure that Least Developed Countries are heard in international negotiations Rights plus action – strengthening local voices to shape land and natural resource rights, investment treaties and practices Inclusive transitions to climate resilience and green economy - get government, business and community representatives ‘to the table’ so that their knowledge and ideas shape national and local dialogues Fair consumption from sustainable food systems - research and design alternative policy solutions for equitable consumption
- NOTES: Our partnerships inspire what we do and influence all our work They have been a defining feature of IIED’s culture, structure and ways of working since its inception 40 years ago We have partners in more than 60 countries. Our partners come from: grassroots-level organisations and alliances, other NGOs, governments, academia, indigenous people’s groups, global institutes and multilateral agencies (e.g. UN) Type of partnership in brief: Advocacy: partnerships to develop and advocate for specific action and influence policy (eg Climate Change Media Partnership) Ideas: partnerships focused on analysis and co-production of knowledge (eg Visiting fellows) Sharing and learning: a closed network or formal group with a shared learning agenda and capacity building objective (eg FGLG) Research and action: partnerships based on collaborative research (UNFPA, ICAAD) Organisational: partnerships to directly contribute to IIED’s strategic planning, programming, and outreach (eg SDI, international fellows)
- NOTES: We have lasting partnerships with local individuals, communities and organisations– many of these develop over years or decades, ensuring that we remain true to the issues that really matter, even as they go in and out of fashion We promote critical thinking about emerging issues and intractable problems — using a pragmatic, evidence-based approach allows us to identify the gaps between rhetoric and reality We gather the evidence and make the connections needed to foster shared learning and bridge key divides across the environment-development landscape
- NOTES: So how does our research work create change that is felt by the world’s vulnerable people? Some examples of our recent achievements include: NB These are just a few examples taken from our generic leaflet and annual report. Projects like the Smallholder Innovation for Resilience (SIFOR) support local communities to innovate and take greater control of their agriculture and food systems, strengthening their ability to cope with change; Our other work for greater local control includes: supporting locally controlled urban poor funds; linking urban poverty, food insecurity and climate change; connecting locally-controlled forest and farm enterprises; and supporting devolved planning for climate change adaptation. We have worked with more than 10 countries on environmental mainstreaming Our peer-reviewed journal Environment & Urbanization is among the world’s most cited and widely read urban journals Since 2001 we have supported LDC negotiators with legal, technical and strategic advice and logistical and administrative support. With partners, we have developed and piloted a framework (TAMD) that can be tailored to specific contexts for measuring adaptation success
- NOTES: Figures for financial year 2013/14 (updated yearly and appear publicly in our annual report) Most of our donors are government aid agencies (UK and Scandinavia) but the diversity of funders is growing Seek to keep support costs low
