The African elephant population is declining rapidly due to poaching and loss of habitat. There are now only around 470,000-690,000 elephants remaining on the continent. Poaching for ivory and bush meat is the primary threat, fueled by demand in Asia. As elephants lose areas to live, they encounter more conflicts with humans and have less space for natural behaviors like nutrient cycling. Their declining numbers also negatively impact other species that rely on elephants. Conservation groups like the World Wildlife Fund are working to increase law enforcement and protections to try to save the species from extinction.

The Kenyan president lit a fire that burned for six days to destroy 105 tonnes of ivory stockpiled by the Kenya Wildlife Service. On a rainy day, the author visited the burning site where ivory was still ablaze in metal pyres fueled by underground burners. The burning site was engulfed in smoke in a sombre mood as the fire cracked, highlighting the destruction humans have caused. For elephants to survive, the world must work together to stop the ivory trade which will in turn stop the killing. After a long battle that left all elephants asleep, the grandchildren of the peace-loving elephants, who were grey, emerged from the jungle and the elephants have lived in peace since.

The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species found only in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. They have grey or black fur and prefer warm, sandy beaches for breeding. Their diet consists of fish, lobsters, octopuses and eels. Only one pup is born at a time each year and is nursed for about six weeks. Major threats include habitat loss from human activity and entanglement in fishing gear. Conservation efforts aim to protect breeding areas, supplement underweight pups' diets, and reduce disturbances to help increase the population, which now stands at around 1,300-1,400 individuals.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
