Cross-Border Conservation Through the Lens of African Elephants

By expanding the model of inter-country cooperation presented by CITES, transfrontier conservation has the potential to promote conservation across borders by utilizing ecotourism as an economic incentive and including communities in grassroots initiatives. My research included analyses of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), Endangered Species Act (ESA), and African Elephant Conservation Act (AECA), as well as case studies of NGOs including Elephants Without Borders and Peace Parks Foundation.

Poaching has drastically reduced populations of tigers from 100,000 in 1900 to only 4,000 in 1990 and cut Africa's elephant population in half by killing them for their tusks. Rhinoceros are also poached for their horns, which are sold for high prices in China due to traditional beliefs. Sharks have their fins sliced off and are thrown back in the ocean unable to swim so their fins can be used for cancer treatments. However, organizations are working to stop poaching and protect endangered species.

Keeping Elephants away from plantations
Elephants have been damaging plantations by feeding on bamboo and crops. Several non-lethal options are proposed to deter elephants including growing chili peppers, nurturing bees, using elephant geo-fencing, and electric fences. Chili peppers and bees have been successfully used in Africa, where the strong smells of chili peppers and buzzing of bees scare elephants away. Geo-fencing uses radio collars and GPS to detect elephants crossing virtual fences and alert rangers. Electric fences are effective but expensive to install and maintain. Other options like ditches and barricades have had limited success due to the elephants' ability to learn and overcome obstacles. The best solutions protect both elephants and farmers' livelihoods.

Walking with Elephants is about the last great herds of elephants in Africa.
With a population of barely 350,000 Savanah elephants left, the biggest of the planet’s land animals face extinction within our lifetime. Half of these elephants during the dry season are densely populated in northern Botswana as they are protected by the government there. However, across the border into Namibia, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe – where many of the elephants return in the wet season, their future is fraught. In Kenya and Tanzania and South Africa, nearly all of the surviving elephants are enclosed in game reserves and no longer roam the wilderness that once saw them travel up to one hundred miles a day.
Walking with Elephants is first and foremost about elephants. While these fast disappearing magnificent and intelligent beasts live out their lives, they are being squeezed by humans into ever smaller patterns of behavior. While poaching is highlighted as a major factor in the decline in elephant numbers, it is in fact farming, and in particular cattle farming, that is robbing elephants of the habitat they foraged for themselves and the animals that depended on the grasslands they created.

Walking with the Elephants
Walking with Elephants is about the last great herds of elephants in Africa.
With a population of barely 350,000 Savanah elephants left, the biggest of the planet’s land animals face extinction within our lifetime. Half of these elephants during the dry season are densely populated in northern Botswana as they are protected by the government there. However, across the border into Namibia, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe – where many of the elephants return in the wet season, their future is fraught. In Kenya and Tanzania and South Africa, nearly all of the surviving elephants are enclosed in game reserves and no longer roam the wilderness that once saw them travel up to one hundred miles a day.
Walking with Elephants is first and foremost about elephants. While these fast disappearing magnificent and intelligent beasts live out their lives, they are being squeezed by humans into ever smaller patterns of behavior. While poaching is highlighted as a major factor in the decline in elephant numbers, it is in fact farming, and in particular cattle farming, that is robbing elephants of the habitat they foraged for themselves and the animals that depended on the grasslands they created.

How Humans Threaten Wildlife
Humans threaten wildlife in many ways, including deliberate exploitation for food, fashion, traditional medicine, and other products; accidental harm from activities like fishing, farming, driving; introducing invasive species that prey on or compete with native species; spreading diseases; and eliminating predators and competitors. One example is the introduction of cane toads in Australia, which have spread rapidly and reduced populations of native animals like quolls, goannas, and snakes by preying on them or competing for resources. Habitat loss from human activities also threatens wildlife by reducing available space.

The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.

The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Cross-Border Conservation Through the Lens of African Elephants
- 1. If Elephants Could Speak... And Why We Should Listen Alexandra Talleur
- 2. This is a comparative historical analysis of the global and grassroots efforts to save the African elephant species. I argue that cross-border initiatives are the future of conservation.
- 3. Their plight began with the ivory trade. Long valued for their tusks, African elephant populations declined from an estimated 1.2 million in the 1970s to roughly 500,000 today.
- 4. Ending the ivory trade.
- 5. Habitat loss and human-elephant conflict pose one of the biggest challenges for conservationists and politicians alike.
- 7. “We do now, through trade monitoring processes, have a greatly improved understanding of the current situation on the ground, the ivory trade dynamics facing the species across its range and the market drivers behind this trade.” – Dr. Holly Dublin, Chair of IUCN’s African Elephant Specialist Group.
