Whiplash is a neck injury caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration forces that damage the soft tissues of the neck. Common symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches and pain in the shoulders, arms, jaw and back. Treatment focuses on medication, physical therapy, massage, education and sometimes surgery to address both physical and emotional issues like depression, anxiety and social isolation that can result from whiplash. Prevention efforts include seatbelts, head restraints and neck exercises, but whiplash is still difficult to prevent in car accidents.
