SCCM Sites
1) Central Administration Site – A central administration site can support up to 25 child primary sites.
When you install a Central Administration Site and use an Enterprise or Datacenter edition of SQL Server,
the hierarchy can support a combined total of up to 400,000 devices. So you must plan for CAS only when
an organization has over 1,00,000 clients.
2) Primary Site – Each primary site can support up to 250 secondary sites and up to 1,00,000 clients.
3) Secondary Site – A secondary site supports a maximum of 5,000 clients. For secondary sites SQL
Server must be installed on the site server computer and in a location if there are fewer than 500 clients,
consider a distribution point instead of a secondary site.
SCCM Site Roles
Management Point – Each primary site supports up to 10 management points and each primary site
management point can support up to 25,000 computer clients. Each secondary site supports a single
management point which must be installed on the site server computer.
Distribution Point – With System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager each primary and secondary
site supports up to 250 distribution points and each distribution point supports connections from up to 4,000
clients. Each primary site supports a combined total of up to 5,000 distribution points. This total includes all
the distribution points at the primary site and all distribution points that belong to the primary site’s child
secondary sites. Each primary and secondary site supports up to 2000 additional distribution points
configured as pull-distribution points. For example, a single primary site supports 2250 distribution points
when 2000 of those distribution points are configured as pull-distribution points.
Fallback status point – Each fallback status point can support up to 100,000 clients.
Asset Intelligence synchronization point - A site system role that connects to Microsoft to download information
for the Asset Intelligence catalog and to upload uncategorized titles so that they can be considered for future
inclusion in the catalog. A hierarchy supports only a single instance of this role, and that must be at the top-tier
site of your hierarchy (A central administration site or the stand-alone primary site). If you expand a stand-alone
primary site into a larger hierarchy, you must uninstall this role from the primary site and can then install it at the
central administration site. For more information, see Asset Intelligence in System Center Configuration Manager.
Reporting services point - A site system role that integrates with SQL Server Reporting
Services to create and manage reports for Configuration Manager. This role is supported
at primary sites and the central administration site, and you can install multiple instances
of this role at a supported site. For more information, see Planning for reporting in
System Center Configuration Manager.
Endpoint Protection point - A site system role that Configuration Manager uses to accept
the Endpoint Protection license terms and to configure the default membership for
Cloud Protection Service (formerly known as MAPS). A hierarchy supports only a single
instance of this role, and that must be at the top-tier site of your hierarchy (A central
administration site or the stand-alone primary site). If you expand a stand-alone primary
site into a larger hierarchy, you must uninstall this role from the primary site and can
then install it at the central administration site. For more information, see Endpoint
Protection in System Center Configuration Manager.
SMS Provider - The SMS Provider role is assigned to each computer that hosts an
instance of the SMS Provider, the interface between a Configuration Manager console
and the site database. By default, this role installs automatically on the site server of a
central administration site and primary sites, and you can install additional instances at
each site to provide administrative access a site to additional administrative users.
Service connection point - A site system role that you use to manage mobile devices
with Microsoft Intune and on-premises MDM. This role also uploads usage data from
your site and is required to make updates for Configuration Manager available in the
Configuration Manager console. A hierarchy supports only a single instance of this role,
and that must be at the top-tier site of your hierarchy (A central administration site or
the stand-alone primary site). If you expand a stand-alone primary site into a larger
hierarchy, you must uninstall this role from the primary site and can then install it at the
central administration site. For more information, see About the service connection
point in System Center Configuration Manager.
Software update point - A site system role that integrates with Windows Server Update
Services (WSUS) to provide software updates to Configuration Manager clients. This role
is supported at all sites:
Install this site system in the central administration site to synchronize with
Windows Server Update Services.
Configure each instance of this role at child primary sites to synchronize with the
central administration site.
Consider installing a software update point in secondary sites when data transfer
across the network is slow.
For more information, see Plan for software updates in System Center Configuration
Manager.
Application Catalog web service poin - A site system role that provides software
information to the Application Catalog website from the Software Library. Although this
role is supported only at primary sites, you can install multiple instances of this role at a
site, or at multiple sites in the same hierarchy.
Application Catalog website point - A site system role that provides users with a list of
available software from the Application Catalog. Although this role is supported only at
primary sites, you can install multiple instances of this role at a site, or at multiple sites in
the same hierarchy.
State migration point - A site system role that stores user state data when a computer is
migrated to a new operating system. This role is supported at primary sites and at
secondary sites, and you can install multiple instances of this role at a site, and at
multiple sites in the same hierarchy. For more information about storing user state when
you deploy an operating system, see Manage user state in System Center Configuration
Manager.
System Health Validator point - This site system role is no longer used with System
Center Configuration Manager although it remains visible in the Configuration Manager
console.
Server Purpose More information
Central administration site The recommended location for all
administration and reporting for the
hierarchy.
•SQL Server is required.
•Does not process client data.
•Does not support client assignment.
•Not all site system roles are available.
•Participates in database replication.
Primary site A required site that manages clients in
well connected networks. All clients are
assigned to a primary site.
•SQL Server is required.
•Additional primary sites provide support
for a higher number of clients.
•Cannot be tiered below other primary
sites.
•Participates in database replication.
Secondary site Manages clients in remote locations
where network bandwidth control is
required.
•SQL Server Express or a full instance of
SQL Server is required. If neither is
installed when the site is installed,
SQL Server Express is automatically
installed.
•A management point and distribution
point are automatically deployed when
the site is installed.
•Secondary sites must be direct child sites
below a primary site, but can be
configured to send content to other
secondary sites.
•Participates in database replication.

  • 6. SCCM Sites 1) Central Administration Site – A central administration site can support up to 25 child primary sites. When you install a Central Administration Site and use an Enterprise or Datacenter edition of SQL Server, the hierarchy can support a combined total of up to 400,000 devices. So you must plan for CAS only when an organization has over 1,00,000 clients. 2) Primary Site – Each primary site can support up to 250 secondary sites and up to 1,00,000 clients. 3) Secondary Site – A secondary site supports a maximum of 5,000 clients. For secondary sites SQL Server must be installed on the site server computer and in a location if there are fewer than 500 clients, consider a distribution point instead of a secondary site.
  • 7. SCCM Site Roles Management Point – Each primary site supports up to 10 management points and each primary site management point can support up to 25,000 computer clients. Each secondary site supports a single management point which must be installed on the site server computer. Distribution Point – With System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager each primary and secondary site supports up to 250 distribution points and each distribution point supports connections from up to 4,000 clients. Each primary site supports a combined total of up to 5,000 distribution points. This total includes all the distribution points at the primary site and all distribution points that belong to the primary site’s child secondary sites. Each primary and secondary site supports up to 2000 additional distribution points configured as pull-distribution points. For example, a single primary site supports 2250 distribution points when 2000 of those distribution points are configured as pull-distribution points. Fallback status point – Each fallback status point can support up to 100,000 clients. Asset Intelligence synchronization point - A site system role that connects to Microsoft to download information for the Asset Intelligence catalog and to upload uncategorized titles so that they can be considered for future inclusion in the catalog. A hierarchy supports only a single instance of this role, and that must be at the top-tier site of your hierarchy (A central administration site or the stand-alone primary site). If you expand a stand-alone primary site into a larger hierarchy, you must uninstall this role from the primary site and can then install it at the central administration site. For more information, see Asset Intelligence in System Center Configuration Manager.
  • 8. Reporting services point - A site system role that integrates with SQL Server Reporting Services to create and manage reports for Configuration Manager. This role is supported at primary sites and the central administration site, and you can install multiple instances of this role at a supported site. For more information, see Planning for reporting in System Center Configuration Manager. Endpoint Protection point - A site system role that Configuration Manager uses to accept the Endpoint Protection license terms and to configure the default membership for Cloud Protection Service (formerly known as MAPS). For more information, see Endpoint Protection in System Center Configuration Manager. SMS Provider - The SMS Provider role is assigned to each computer that hosts an instance of the SMS Provider, the interface between a Configuration Manager console and the site database. By default, this role installs automatically on the site server of a central administration site and primary sites, and you can install additional instances at each site to provide administrative access a site to additional administrative users.
  • 9. Service connection point - A site system role that you use to manage mobile devices with Microsoft Intune and on-premises MDM. This role also uploads usage data from your site and is required to make updates for Configuration Manager available in the Configuration Manager console. For more information, see About the service connection point in System Center Configuration Manager. Software update point - A site system role that integrates with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to provide software updates to Configuration Manager clients. This role is supported at all sites: Install this site system in the central administration site to synchronize with Windows Server Update Services. Configure each instance of this role at child primary sites to synchronize with the central administration site. Consider installing a software update point in secondary sites when data transfer across the network is slow. For more information, see Plan for software updates in System Center Configuration Manager.
  • 10. Application Catalog web service poin - A site system role that provides software information to the Application Catalog website from the Software Library. Although this role is supported only at primary sites, you can install multiple instances of this role at a site, or at multiple sites in the same hierarchy. Application Catalog website point - A site system role that provides users with a list of available software from the Application Catalog. Although this role is supported only at primary sites, you can install multiple instances of this role at a site, or at multiple sites in the same hierarchy. State migration point - A site system role that stores user state data when a computer is migrated to a new operating system. This role is supported at primary sites and at secondary sites, and you can install multiple instances of this role at a site, and at multiple sites in the same hierarchy. For more information about storing user state when you deploy an operating system, see Manage user state in System Center Configuration Manager. System Health Validator point - This site system role is no longer used with System Center Configuration Manager although it remains visible in the Configuration Manager console.
  • 11. Server Purpose More information Central administration site The recommended location for all administration and reporting for the hierarchy. •SQL Server is required. •Does not process client data. •Does not support client assignment. •Not all site system roles are available. •Participates in database replication. Primary site A required site that manages clients in well connected networks. All clients are assigned to a primary site. •SQL Server is required. •Additional primary sites provide support for a higher number of clients. •Cannot be tiered below other primary sites. •Participates in database replication. Secondary site Manages clients in remote locations where network bandwidth control is required. •SQL Server Express or a full instance of SQL Server is required. If neither is installed when the site is installed, SQL Server Express is automatically installed. •A management point and distribution point are automatically deployed when the site is installed. •Secondary sites must be direct child sites below a primary site, but can be configured to send content to other secondary sites. •Participates in database replication.
