GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for second generation (2G) digital cellular networks, achieving a global market share of over 80%. It replaced first generation (1G) analog networks and expanded to support data communications through GPRS and EDGE. Subsequent advancements led to the development of 3G and 4G standards by the 3GPP, which are not part of the ETSI GSM standard.
